Catecholamine-associated left ventricular hypertrophy in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism and myxomatous mitral valve disease: a prospective pilot study.

IMPORTANCE: Endogenous Cushing's syndrome increases the risk of cardiac hypertrophy, dysfunction, and cardiovascular mortality. Given the high prevalence of hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) and myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs, endocrine-cardiac interactions may influence disease progression but remain poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of concurrent HAC on cardiac remodeling and function in dogs with subclinical MMVD and identify metabolic and neurohormonal markers, particularly catecholamine metabolites, associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and dysfunct

Association of Uric Acid to High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Ratio with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Chronic Kidney Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular complications, including left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which significantly increases morbidity and mortality. LVH in CKD results from a complex interplay of hemodynamic, neurohormonal, and metabolic factors. The uric acid-to-high density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has recently been proposed as a potential marker for cardiovascular outcomes, combining the effects of uric acid and HDL-C on inflammation and cardiovascular risk. However, the relationship between UHR and LVH in CKD patie

Hydrogen Sulfide and Nitric Oxide Improve Renal Function and α-Adrenergic Responsiveness in Rats with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy.

In left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), the combined external administration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to reverse LVH by activating the endothelial nitric oxide synthase pathway (eNOS/NO), independent of the cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE/H2S) pathway. Individually, both H2S and NO have also been reported to significantly improve RCBP, restore renal excretory performance, and enhance α-adrenergic receptor responsiveness in rats. The induction of LVH was performed over a period of two weeks using drinking water with caffeine and isoprenaline. Five weeks later, th

Identifying PRKAG2 syndrome-a rare cause of wolff-Parkinson-white syndrome and left ventricular hypertrophy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In young patients presenting with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a genetic aetiology should be considered, particularly when cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension or valvular heart disease are not present, or when there is a suggestive family history of cardiomyopathy. PRKAG2 syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by cardiac glycogen storage, ventricular pre-excitation, and hypertrophy, often mimicking hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). CASE SUMMARY: A 22-year-old male with a history of WPW syndrome presented with recur

Protease-activated receptor 2 deficient mice develop less angiotensin II induced left ventricular hypertrophy but more cardiac fibrosis.

AIMS: Activation of Protease Activated Receptor 2 (PAR2) has been shown to be involved in regulation of injury-related processes including inflammation, fibrosis and hypertrophy. In this study we will investigate the role of PAR2 in cardiac injury in a mouse model of hypertension using continuous infusion with angiotensin II. METHODS: Hypertension was induced in 12 weeks old wildtype (wt, n = 8) and PAR2 deficient mice (n = 9) by continuous infusion with angiotensin II for 4 weeks using osmotic minipumps. At the end, hearts were collected for analysis of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), my

Natural history of MRAS-related Noonan syndrome: Evidence of mild adult-onset left ventricular hypertrophy and neuropsychiatric features.

Gain of function pathogenic variants in MRAS have been found in a small subset of pediatric subjects presenting with Noonan syndrome (NS) associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and moderate to severe intellectual disability. These variants are considered to confer a high-risk for the development of severe HCM with poor prognosis and fatal outcome. We report on the natural history of the first adult subject with NS carrying the recurrent pathogenic p.Thr68Ile amino acid substitution. Different from what had previously been observed, he presented with a mild, late-onset left ventricul

Disease progression in cardiac morphology and function in heart failure: ATTR cardiac amyloidosis versus hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is today more frequently recognized but the rate of progression of cardiac dysfunction is not well established. The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of cardiac structure and function changes, over time, in a retrospective cohort of ATTR-CA patients. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with ATTR-CA (mean age 78 ± 7 years, 30 females) were compared with 20 patients with heart failure but no amyloidosis (HFnCA) (mean age 76 ± 7 years, 5 females), all with septal thickness >  = 14 mm. All patients underwent DPD scintigraphy and an echo

Chronic Kidney Disease and Left Ventricular Hypertrophy. Potent Modifiers of the Prognostic Impact of Circadian Blood Pressure Changes.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the prognostic value of blood pressure (BP) changes from day to night is modified by concomitant risk factors and organ damage. METHODS: We studied 3247 clinically hypertensive patients who underwent off-therapy 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring during their initial diagnostic work-up. Over a mean 9.9-year follow-up, 292 patients developed a first primary outcome event (composite of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, cardiovascular death, hospitalization for heart failure) and 281 died. The day-night BP changes were analyzed as night-to-day systo

Morning blood pressure surge in early autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease and its relation with left ventricular hypertrophy.

INTRODUCTION: The activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which usually leads to a swift surge in blood pressure in the morning hours (MBPS) may be the cause of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and endothelial dysfunction (ED) in early autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients. We studied the association between MBPS and LVH in ADPKD patients with preserved renal functions. METHODS: Patients with ADPKD with preserved renal functions were enrolled. Prewaking MBPS was calculated using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. The patients were categorized as MBPS (≥media

Rho-kinase inhibition reverses impaired Ca2+ handling and associated left ventricular dysfunction in pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy.

Recent studies have implicated a relationship between RhoA/ROCK activity and defective Ca2+ homeostasis in hypertrophic hearts. This study investigated molecular mechanism underlying ROCK inhibition-mediated cardioprotection against pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy, with a focus on Ca2+ homeostasis. Cardiac hypertrophy model was established by performing transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in 8-week-old male rats. Groups were assigned as SHAM, TAC and TAC+Fas (rats undergoing TAC and treated with fasudil). Rats in the TAC+Fas group were administered fasudil (5mg/kg/day), and rats

Role of bone marrow-derived CD11c+ dendritic cells in systolic overload-induced left ventricular inflammation, fibrosis and hypertrophy.

Inflammatory responses play an important role in the development of left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and dysfunction. Recent studies demonstrated that increased T-cell infiltration and T-cell activation contribute to LV hypertrophy and dysfunction. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells that orchestrate immune responses, especially by modulating T-cell function. In this study, we investigated the role of bone marrow-derived CD11c+ DCs in transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced LV fibrosis and hypertrophy in mice. We observed that TAC increased the number of CD11c

The relationship between electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy criteria and echocardiographic mass in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

INTRODUCTION: Calcific aortic stenosis (AS) is a common valvular disease among the elderly. Often, AS leads to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and symptoms of heart failure. Severe AS can be treated by transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Previous studies have shown that electrocardiogram (ECG) criteria for LVH correlate poorly with left ventricular mass (LVM) in echocardiography. However, such correlations have not been studied in TAVR patients. AIMS: To evaluate ECG LVH criteria as a method of diagnosing and quantifying LVH in patients with AS undergoing TAVR. Natakalim improves post-infarction left ventricular remodeling by restoring the coordinated balance between endothelial function and cardiac hypertrophy.

Endothelial dysfunction can lead to congestive heart failure and the activation of endothelial ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channels may contribute to endothelial protection. Therefore, the present study was carried out to investigate the hypothesis that natakalim, a novel K(ATP) channel opener, ameliorates post-infarction left ventricular remodeling and failure by correcting endothelial dysfunction. The effects of myocardial infarction were assessed 8 weeks following left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion in male Wistar rats. Depressed blood pressure, cardiac dysfunction, evid

Serum uric acid is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy independent of serum parathyroid hormone in male cardiac patients.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that serum uric acid (UA) is associated with left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy. Serum levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which has bbe shown to be correlated with UA, is also known to be associated with cardiac hypertrophy; however, whether the association between UA and cardiac hypertrophy is independent of PTH remains unknown. PURPOSE: We investigated whether the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and LV hypertrophy is independent of intact PTH and other calcium-phosphate metabolism-related factors in cardiac patients. Optimal fluid control can normalize cardiovascular risk markers and limit left ventricular hypertrophy in thrice weekly dialysis patients.

Increased hemodialysis frequency can make fluid overload easier to treat, although most patients are still treated thrice weekly. Chronic fluid overload is associated with left ventricular hypertrophy and elevated serum cardiac biomarkers, recognized as mortality risk factors. Serum cardiac troponin T (cTnT), N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), left ventricular mass index by cardiac magnetic imaging, and ambulatory blood pressure was measured in 30 thrice weekly hemodiafiltration patients. Time-averaged fluid overload (TAFO) was quantified by bioimpedance spectroscopy.

Long-term use of low-dose spironolactone in spontaneously hypertensive rats: effects on left ventricular hypertrophy and stiffness.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of low-dose spironolactone initiated during the early stages of hypertension development and to assess the effects of chronic pressure overload on ventricular remodeling in rats. Male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) (4 weeks) were randomized to receive daily spironolactone (20 mg/kg) or vehicle (mineral oil) from 4 weeks to 8 months of age. Systolic blood pressure was measured non-invasively by tail-cuff pletysmography at baseline, 4 and 8 months. Hemodynamic assessment was performed at the end of treatment by arterial and ventricu

Revisiting methods for assessing and comparing left ventricular diastolic stiffness: impact of relaxation, external forces, hypertrophy, and comparators.

Understanding diastolic function mandates feasible and accurate methods to construct and compare the diastolic pressure (P)-volume (V) relationship (PVR). This study compared the relaxation-corrected single beat (RC-SB) to the multiple-beat (MB) (vena cava occlusion) method for constructing the diastolic PVR in 26 young normal or old hypertensive dogs before and after increases in afterload (phenylephrine) or acute volume expansion in the presence (n = 14) or absence (n = 12) of the pericardium. The PVR data were fit to P = alphae(beta x V). Derived stiffness indexes compared included the stif
