Can cognitive neuroscience illuminate the nature of traumatic childhood memories?

Recent findings from cognitive neuroscience and cognitive psychology may help explain why recovered memories of trauma are sometimes illusory. In particular, the notion of defective source monitoring has been used to explain a wide range of recently established memory distortions and illusions. Conversely, the results of a number of studies may potentially be relevant to forgetting and recovery of accurate memories, including studies demonstrating reduced hippocampal volume in survivors of sexual abuse, and recovery from functional and organic retrograde amnesia. Other recent findings of inter…

[Non-dominant hemisphere syndrome as a result of a right thalamic infarct: an anatomoclinical case].

A 71 year old man had a massive left sensory deficit and hemiplegia, with left heminanopia, visual neglect and constructional apraxia. Moreover he experienced an extra-left arm and illusions of movements. 3 weeks later he suffered "thalamic" pain on left side; he died suddenly 6 weeks after the stroke. Post-mortem examination revealed: a) a right inner temporal and occipital infarction; b) a right thalamic infarction in the thalamogeniculate and paramedian territories; c) an infarction in the adjacent right internal capsule. Considering this case and pertinent literature on clinicopathological…

Use of the Pulfrich pendulum for detecting abnormal delay in the visual pathway in multiple sclerosis.

(1) Pulfrich's pendulum has been developed as a method for detecting abnormal delay in the visual pathway of patients with suspected multiple sclerosis. (2) Forty-one normal subjects gave a mean interocular latency difference of 2-4 +/- 1-8 msec on Pulfrich's pendulum. This mean +2 SD (6 msec) was taken as the limit of normal interocular latency difference by this method. (3) The test was assessed on 58 patients. Eighteen of these had definite multiple sclerosis, 9 had probable multiple sclerosis, and 8 had possible multiple sclerosis, according to clinical criteria. The remaining 23 patients

Multisensory simultaneity-judgment training and speech comprehension in patients with schizophrenia.

Multisensory integration allows the brain to align auditory and visual signals in time, a process critical for accurate perception. This process has been shown to be abnormal in schizophrenia (SZ); patients show a wider temporal binding window (TBW), perceiving asynchronous inputs as simultaneous over longer intervals. Such deficits have been linked to hallucinations, disorganized symptoms, and impaired speech comprehension in SZ. While prior studies suggest that audiovisual simultaneity-judgment training (SJT) can recalibrate temporal perception in healthy adults, its efficacy in SZ has not y

Innovative Compact Vibrational System with Custom GUI for Modulating Trunk Proprioception Using Individualized Vibration Parameters.

Conventional vibrational systems associated with proprioception are mostly equipped with a single standard frequency and amplitude. This feature often fails to show kinesthetic illusion on different subjects, as different individuals respond to different frequencies and amplitudes. Additionally, different muscle groups may also require the flexibility of frequencies and amplitudes. We developed a custom vibrational system that is equipped with flexible frequency and amplitude, adapted to a custom graphical user interface (GUI). Based on the user's criteria, the proposed vibrational system enab

Disentangling the neural correlates of agency, ownership and multisensory processing.

The experience of the self as an embodied agent in the world is an essential aspect of human consciousness. This experience arises from the feeling of control over one's bodily actions, termed the Sense of Agency, and the feeling that the body belongs to the self, Body Ownership. Despite longstanding philosophical and scientific interest in the relationship between the body and brain, the neural systems involved in Body Ownership and Sense of Agency, and especially their interactions, are not yet understood. In this preregistered study using the Moving Rubber Hand Illusion inside an MR-scanner

The perception of food size and food shape in anorexia nervosa.

Visual perception of food size and shape in anorexia nervosa (AN) is an understudied topic, notwithstanding its relevance in approaching food, key-element in weight restoration. In addition, it is unclear how visual perception in AN is related to the age and the duration of illness. Here, we compared patients with AN to healthy controls (HCs) on their spatial resolution, biases in perceived food size, and holistic processing of food shape. A total of 122 participants were enrolled: 48 adolescents (27 AN and 21 HCs) and 74 adults (33 AN and 41 HCs). Participants at two academic sites (Israel an

The role of expectation in multisensory body representation - neural evidence.

Sensory events contribute to body ownership, the feeling that the body belongs to me. However, the encoding of sensory events is not only reactive, but also proactive in that our brain generates prediction about forthcoming stimuli. In previous studies, we have shown that prediction of sensory events is a sufficient condition to induce the sense of body ownership. In this study, we investigated the underlying neural mechanisms. Participants were seated with their right arm resting upon a table just below another smaller table. Hence, the real hand was hidden from the participant's view and a l

Spatiotemporal Form Integration: sequentially presented inducers can lead to representations of stationary and rigidly rotating objects.

Objects in the world often are occluded and in motion. The visible fragments of such objects are revealed at different times and locations in space. To form coherent representations of the surfaces of these objects, the visual system must integrate local form information over space and time. We introduce a new illusion in which a rigidly rotating square is perceived on the basis of sequentially presented Pacman inducers. The illusion highlights two fundamental processes that allow us to perceive objects whose form features are revealed over time: Spatiotemporal Form Integration (STFI) and Posi

Interoceptive ability and body awareness in autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been associated with various sensory atypicalities across multiple domains. Interoception, the ability to detect and attend to internal bodily sensations, has been found to moderate the experience of body ownership, a known difference in ASD that may affect social function. However, interoception has not been empirically examined in ASD. In the current study, 45 children (21 with ASD and 24 controls) ages 8 to 17 years completed a heartbeat perception paradigm as a measure of interoceptive ability. A subset of these children also completed the rubber hand ill

Measuring cognitive distortions in pathological gambling: review and meta-analyses.

There is broad agreement that cognitive distortions are an integral component of the development, maintenance, and treatment of pathological gambling. There is no authoritative catalog of the distortions that are observed more frequently in pathological gamblers than in others, but several instruments have been successfully developed that measure various distortions of interest, which are reviewed. All of the prominent instruments include measures of the illusion of control (perceiving more personal control over events than is warranted), and almost all include measures of gambler's fallacy (t

Neck muscle vibration in full cues affects pointing.

Vibration of the dorsolateral neck stimulates proprioceptors that are normally active during head movement; this induces a visual illusion of contralateral motion and displacement of a stationary target seen against a homogenous background. The spatial constancy explanation of the illusion argues that it occurs because information about head movement is necessary for accurate egocentric localization of visual objects. Accurate egocentric localization, in turn, is necessary for the success of object-directed motor action, but previous studies failed to find evidence that vibration affects point

A psychophysical investigation of ocular expansion in human eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate spatial anisotropies in the peripheral visual field of axially myopic eyes, in an attempt to distinguish between models of isotropic and anisotropic ocular stretching. METHODS: Stimuli consisted of two high-contrast Gaussian patches presented in one of four orientations (90 degrees, 180 degrees, 45 degrees, or 135 degrees). For each orientation, perceived separation was established relative to that for all other orientations. The experiment was conducted with central fixation and at 15 degrees in the nasal and inferior visual fields. Eleven myopes and nine emmetropes p

Around 25% of patients with visual hallucinations secondary to eye disease report hallucinations of text. The hallucinated text conveys litt … gnosia, and associative visual agnosia. Of particular significance was the presence of pure alexia. Illusions of colour induced by monochromatic gratings and a novel motion-direction illusion were also observed, both consistent with the residual capacities of the patient's spared visual cortex. To appear in a new light: Varying illumination colors induce dynamic transformations of perceptual qualities in still images.

We demonstrate that dynamic illumination color variations can trigger surprising changes in perceptual qualities for printed imagery. We explored different types of printed stimuli, including existing illusions with color patterns, contrast phenomena, colored materials and objects, and art. Stimuli were presented under color-changing illumination, and naive observers were asked to report whether they saw any qualitative changes, and if so, of what type they were. Observers reported a wide variety of effects, ranging from glowing, deforming, wiggling, rotating, and flowing, to changes in depth …

Agenesis of the right lung: an unusual presentation.

A case of agenesis or aplasia of the right lung, in a cyanosed neonate, exceptionally associated with a `vascular ring' abnormality produced by a right aortic arch, an aberrant left subclavian artery, and a patent ductus arteriosus, is reported. The presence of an abnormal lobe of the liver, projecting together with small gut and a subhepatic caecum into the right hemithorax, caused mediastinal displacement to the left side and produced the illusion of a diaphragmatic hernia, thereby obscuring the correct preoperative diagnosis.

Feeling of Ownership over an Embodied Avatar's Hand Brings About Fast Changes of Fronto-Parietal Cortical Dynamics.

When we look at our body parts, we are immediately aware that they belong to us and we rarely doubt about the integrity, continuity, and sense of ownership of our body. Despite this certainty, immersive virtual reality (IVR) may lead to a strong feeling of embodiment over an artificial body part seen from a first-person perspective (1PP). Although such feeling of ownership (FO) has been described in different situations, it is not yet understood how this phenomenon is generated at neural level. To track the real-time brain dynamics associated with FO, we delivered transcranial magnetic stimuli

The bodily self from psychosis to psychedelics.

The sense of self is a foundational element of neurotypical human consciousness. We normally experience the world as embodied agents, with the unified sensation of our selfhood being nested in our body. Critically, the sense of self can be altered in psychiatric conditions such as psychosis and altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic compounds. The similarity of phenomenological effects across psychosis and psychedelic experiences has given rise to the "psychotomimetic" theory suggesting that psychedelics simulate psychosis-like states. Moreover, psychedelic-induced changes in t

Distance Deception by Fragmented Objects: How Figures May Alter the Perceived Depth of the Background.

Illusory displacements in depth may be perceived in simple geometric configurations devoid of cues for spatial computation but also in real-world images where there is no shortage of information of this kind. Two of these different contexts drew the attention of vision scientists as sources of depth illusions: the Kanizsa square and the images of statues that Catalano's created with a part missing. Similar depth alterations occur in both cases: the portions of the background surrounded by "inducers" (pacmen or body parts) are perceived as coming to the foreground. These illusory effects appear…
