BACKGROUND: This study investigated which categories of obsessive-compulsive and Tourette-related behaviors in Gilles de la Tourette's disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) without tics are experienced as most severe across the study groups and what the differences are in symptom distribution between the study groups.
METHOD: Fourteen subjects with both Tourette's disorder and OCD, 18 subjects with Tourette's only, 21 subjects with OCD (no tics), and 29 control subjects were studied using a semistructured interview designed to equally assess Tourette- and OCD-related behaviors acco

Psychosis in Parkinson's disease (PD) is currently considered as the occurrence of hallucinations and delusions. The historical meaning of the term psychosis was, however, broader, encompassing a disorganization of both consciousness and personality, including behavior abnormalities, such as impulsive overactivity and catatonia, in complete definitions by the International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Our review is aimed at reminding that complex psychotic symptoms, including impulsive overactivity

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic and lifelong condition that requires adequate behavior management in order to meet desired health outcomes. The effects of T1DM on the neurocognitive functioning of affected individuals raise concerns about how the disease may influence executive functioning. Inhibition is a core component of executive functioning, and plays a vital role in self-regulation and the restriction of impulsive behaviors. Inhibition may thus play a vital role in the behavior management of people with T1DM. The aim of this study was to identify current gaps in existing kno…

PURPOSE: Given the risk and increased incidence of problem betting for young adults, the purpose of the current study was to understand what influences college students' problem sports betting behavior using the theory of planned behavior (TPB).
METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected from 311 college students in the U.S. using a survey questionnaire and primarily analyzed using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique to investigate the relationships between the study variables. In addition, multi-group SEM an

Treatment with dopaminergic agonists such as pramipexole (PPX) contributes to the development of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). As such, animal models of abnormal impulse control in PD are needed to better study the pathophysiology of these behaviors. Thus, we investigated impulsivity and related behaviors using the 5-choice serial reaction time task, as well as FosB/ΔFosB expression, in rats with mild parkinsonism induced by viral-mediated substantia nigra overexpression of human A53T mutated α-synuclein, and following chronic PPX treatment (0.25 m

Self-harm behaviors are a major public health concern across the lifespan, particularly among individuals with psychiatric disorders. Little research, however, has examined these behaviors among individuals with a diagnosis characterized by recurrent acts of impulsive aggression, Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED). Furthermore, extant research has not examined variables that might mediate the relationship between IED and self-harm. The current study examined the rates of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempts among individuals with IED as compared to healthy controls, individu

Intertemporal and probabilistic decision-making has been studied in psychiatry, ecology, and neuroeconomics. Because drug addicts and psycopaths often make risky decisions (e.g., drug misuse and aggression), investigation into types of impulsivity in intertemporal and probabilistic choices (delay and probability discounting) are important for psychiatric treatments. Studies in behavioral ecology proposed that delay and probability discounting are mediated by the same psychological process, because a decrease in probability of winning corresponds to an increase in delay until winning. According

Contraception has been little investigated in bipolar disorder, an illness associated with impulsive sexual behavior and use of medications that are unsafe during pregnancy. In this cross-sectional survey of 136 women with bipolar disorder, prevalence of contraception use was 58.8%. Use of any method was associated in the multivariable analysis with being married, younger than 40 and having had previous pregnancies. Women diagnosed with bipolar disorder and treated in a tertiary facility use contraceptive methods suboptimally.

Many common psychiatric conditions, such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Parkinson's disease, addiction and pathological gambling are linked by a failure in the mechanisms that control, or inhibit, inappropriate behavior. Models of rat behavioral inhibition permit us to study in detail the anatomical and pharmacological bases of inhibitory failure, using methods that translate directly with patient assessment in the clinic. This review updates current ideas relating to behavioral inhibition based on two significant lines of evidence from

BACKGROUND: "Impulse Control Disorders" are behavioral conditions (e.g., gambling, hypersexuality), which are increasingly reported as reactions to dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease. The Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease focuses only on 6 behaviors. Nonetheless, impulsivity could affect the entire range of human practices. Because of their heterogeneity and undefined boundaries, it is not clear what conditions should be considered as Impulse Control Disorders. This results in poorly standardized scientific literature and underdiagnosis.
OBJECTIVE:

RATIONALE: In animal studies, the common club drug 3,4-methylendioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, "Ecstasy") consistently caused a prolonged loss of presynaptic serotonergic neurons, and evidence suggests that MDMA consumption may also affect the human serotonergic system. Serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in the regulation of impulsivity and such executive functions as decision-making cognition. In fact, MDMA users have shown elevated impulsivity in two studies, but little is known about decision making in drug-free MDMA consumers.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the cognitive ne

OBJECTIVES: In older patients with mental and physical multimorbidity (MPM), personality assessment is highly complex. Our aim was to examine personality traits in this population using the Hetero-Anamnestic Personality questionnaire (HAP), and to compare the premorbid perspective of patients' relatives (HAP) with the present-time perspective of nursing staff (HAP-t).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: Dutch gerontopsychiatric nursing home (GP-NH) units.
PARTICIPANTS: Totally, 142 GP-NH residents with MPM (excluding dementia).
MEASUREMENTS: NH norm data of the HAP were used to identify clin

Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct associated with poor planning skills, difficulty in maintaining attention, and behavioral disinhibition-especially in conditions of highly activated affective states. Impulsivity plays a prominent role in adolescents, in whom high levels of impulsivity expose them to a greater risk of exhibiting risky behaviors or developing pathological conditions. Currently, one of the most popular frameworks to explain and assess impulsivity is the UPPS-P, which distinguishes between five impulsivity components, and from which the UPPS-P Scale and its short form are d

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder whose three main symptoms are impulsiveness, inattention, and hyperactivity. Although ADHD is an early developmental disorder, it may persist into adulthood, resulting in deficits associated with poor academic performance, frequent job changes, poor and unstable marriages, and increases in motor vehicle accidents. Of the three primary symptoms of ADHD, deficits in impulse control are the most challenging to the social network and the judicial system. While the etiology of ADHD remains unknown, recent work suggests t

OBJECTIVE: The very early engagement in bulimic behaviors, such as binge eating, may be influenced by factors that dispose individuals to impulsive action as well as by factors that dispose individuals to depressive symptomatology. Using a longitudinal design, we conducted the first test of the simultaneous operation of both risk factors as children transition from elementary to middle school.
METHOD: In a sample of 1,906 children, we assessed risk for impulsive action (negative urgency, which is the tendency to act rashly when distressed, and eating expectancies, which are learned anticipati

Previous research has established media violence as a causal risk factor for aggressive behavior. Several theoretical mechanisms have been identified to explain this effect. The present study assessed 422 undergraduate students to test the possibility that individual differences in attention problems and impulsiveness can help explain the link between violent media and aggression. Attention problems and impulsiveness proved to be a distinct construct from other processes believed to mediate aggression (aggressive beliefs, aggression related schemata, trait anger, and trait hostility). Attentio

In the present study, the decision making abilities of patients with substance use disorders were compared to those of healthy controls and, subsequently, the impact of psychiatric distress, behavioral inhibition, and impulsivity on Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) performance were evaluated. A total of 31 patients and 31 matched healthy controls performed the IGT and completed the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and the Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System (BIS/BAS). The results confirmed that the patient group had severe impairments on the IGT relative to the controls, w

Background: Frontal lobe circuit dysfunction, including the mesolimbic network, plays an important role in learning reward behaviors and is involved in the development of impulsive compulsive disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). ICDs in PD are characterized by disinhibited, reward-driven behaviors performed with poor impulse control, often linked to dopaminergic treatment. The purpose of the present study was to assess the presence of these behaviors in relation to frontal dysfunction and overall cognitive status in a cohort of patients with sporadic PD. Methods: The study consisted o
