Massive suprachoroidal hemorrhage with retinal and vitreous incarceration; a vitreoretinal surgical approach.

Suprachoroidal hemorrhage(SH) may cause the expulsion of the intraocular contents. Vitreous incarceration in the wound and retinal detachment with SH are extremely poor prognostic signs. Treatment modalities depend on the severity of eye damage. This particular patient had "kissing" hemorrhagic choroidal detachment which completely filled the vitreous cavity after cataract surgery. It seemed to be inoperable. Secondary surgery was delayed 3 days to lower IOP to normal levels. The eye underwent anterior drainage sclerotomy under constantly-maintained limbal or pars plana infusion fluid line pre…

Incarceration of existing inguinal hernia as a complication of pulmonary function testing.

Pulmonary function testing (PFT) has not been listed as a risk for development of incarceration in an existing inguinal hernia. We report two patients who developed this complication after routine preoperative PFT. We also present data of our retrospective review of eight patients with inguinal hernia who were referred for preoperative PFT. Two out of eight patients suffered incarceration of an existing inguinal hernia. We found no significant difference in mean age, weight, smoking habits, number of forced expiratory maneuvers, time of sustained forced expiratory maneuver, or any PFT data bet…

Risk, protection and mental health among incarcerated people.

PURPOSE: This study aims to examine how elements of prison routine are associated with mental health distress among incarcerated individuals in state prisons, and whether these associations differ according to self-reported mental disorder diagnosis. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using data from the 2016 US Survey of Prison Inmates (N = 19,734), the authors estimated survey-weighted linear regression models with jackknife repeated replication. Two sets of models examined participation in job training, educational programming and physical exercise. Interaction terms assessed whether association

The health status of incarcerated people in Canada: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: People who experience incarceration in Canada have been historically more likely to experience poor health than community-based populations. Although incarcerated people are entitled to health care equivalent to community standards, evidence suggests this is inconsistently achieved in Canada. We conducted a narrative review to synthesize contemporary evidence on health status and health care utilization by incarcerated people in Canada, including changes observed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science for …

Mental Health in the Chilean Incarcerated Population: A Screening Approach.

From both a social and epidemiological perspective, incarcerated individuals in Latin America face a series of accumulated disadvantages in different areas, one of them being the deterioration in their mental health linked to confinement and the negative effects of incarceration. However, since mental health evaluations at the intake phase are virtually non-existent for incarcerated populations in Chile, the diagnosis of, monitoring of, and intervention initiatives on mental health issues are very limited, thus limiting the possibilities of causal relationship analysis and evidence-based inter…

The direct financial costs of having a family member incarcerated.

Using original data from the Family Incarceration Costs Survey, we present national estimates of the direct financial costs of family member incarceration. We find that most Americans with an incarcerated family member provide them direct financial support. The median monthly direct expense among those who contribute is $172, which represents 6% of their household income. On average, Blacks and Hispanics incur higher direct expenses than whites despite their lower household incomes. Men and women contribute similar amounts, but these direct expenses reflect a larger share of women's household …

Torsion of funiculocele presenting as an incarcerated hernia: A rare case.

INTRODUCTION: Inguinal hernia is common, but the groin area can host various pathologies. Distinguishing clinically between hernias and rare conditions like torsion of funiculocele poses challenges due to similar presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old man, with a 10-year-history of a groin mass, presented with a painful groin mass, initially diagnosed as a strangulated hernia. In surgery, a torsion of a cyst was identified, and it was attached to the spermatic cord. A detorsion of the cyst and an excision were successfully performed. The patient recovered well with no recurrence. DI

Language in Nigerian Correctional Education: Incarcerated Persons Speak.

PURPOSE: Language, as an integral aspect of human interaction, plays a pivotal role in the reformation process within the correctional setting. Nigerian correctional centers consist of a diverse population of incarcerated individuals originating from various cultural backgrounds, each possessing distinct linguistic abilities and comprehension. However, a conspicuous gap in the literature remains concerning the language practices of instructors in Nigerian correctional education programs and the active participation of incarcerated individuals in shaping their own educational experiences. The p

The importance of predictive markers in incarcerated abdominal wall hernia.

PURPOSE: Emergency abdominal wall hernia repairs play a significant role in general surgical emergencies. In such cases, the time taken to decide on surgery is crucial, as the situation may progress to necrosis, perforation, and organ resection due to strangulation following incarceration. To facilitate the early detection of this condition, studies have been conducted on various predictive markers, most of which are related to similar markers used in acute mesenteric ischemia. This study aims to assess the predictive significance of preoperative laboratory and imaging findings in incarcerated…
