Geophysical maps depicting continental movement have consistently shown India, as it moved northward, to be located far out in the Tethys Sea. India split off from the African east coast about 148 m.y.a. From that time onward, according to almost all geophysical accounts, India was isolated from all of other continents until the early Miocene when it made contact with Eurasia. But the biological data, both fossil and Recent, indicate that this concept cannot be correct. If India had really existed as an isolated, oceanic continent for about 100 m.y., it should have developed a peculiar biota w…

The prevalence of larval Echinococcus granulosus in buffaloes, sheep and goats and in adult stray and shepherd dogs was studied in northern India. A total of 48.1% of 754 buffaloes, 30.5% of 1215 sheep and 21.0% of 447 goats were found to be infected with this parasite. A case is reported of lethal septicemic melioidosis due to Pseudomonas pseudomallei in a 40-year-old woman who had been in India. The epidemiology, clinical findings and management of this unusual disease are discussed. The diagnostic value of serological tests and in vitro sensitivity of Pseudomonas pseudomallei to various antibiotics are outlined. Melioidosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any febrile condition in a person returning from a tropical country.

The incidence of sarcoptic mange in buffaloes with respect to age, sex, relative humidity and temperature was studied at veterinary clinics and breeding farms in Hisar, India. The disease is more common in animals below the age of one year (19.57%) and decreases with the advancement of age i.e. 3.4% at one to five years and 5.3% in the over five years group. Sex has no bearing on the incidence of the disease. Since female buffalo calves get more attention at the hands of small farmers they are presented more frequently at the veterinary clinics. Fluctuations in environmental temperature affect…
