Morbidity and mortality amongst infants of diabetic mothers admitted into Soba university hospital, Khartoum, Sudan.

The prevalence of diabetes during pregnancy is increasing and this is associated with an increased risk of complications in both mother and fetus. The aim of this research is to study the neonatal complications of maternal diabetes. This was a prospective observational study that was conducted in Soba university hospital between September 2010 and March 2011. All infants born to diabetic mothers during the study period were admitted to the neonatal care unit for evaluation. Data on sex, gestational age, and birth weight, mode of delivery, complications, investigations, birth injury, and length

Mortality in first 5 years in infants with functional single ventricle born in Texas, 1996 to 2003.

BACKGROUND: Infants with functional single ventricle have a high risk of death during the early years of life. Studies have reported improvement in postoperative survival, but they do not include preoperative deaths or those occurring before transfer. The purpose of this population-based study was to estimate 5-year survival in infants with functional single ventricle, to define factors associated with survival, and to estimate improvement in outcome. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, pulmonary atresia intact ventricular septum, single ventricle, and tricuspi

Vitamin A supplementation to prevent mortality and short and long-term morbidity in very low birthweight infants.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A is necessary for normal lung growth and the ongoing integrity of respiratory tract epithelial cells. Preterm infants have low vitamin A status at birth and this has been associated with increased risk of developing chronic lung disease. Several studies have been undertaken to assess whether vitamin A supplementation beyond that routinely given in multivitamin preparations can reduce the incidence of this outcome. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefit and risk of supplementation with vitamin A in very low birthweight infants. SEARCH STRATEGY: Searches were made of the Oxford

Prophylactic systemic antifungal agents to prevent mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infection is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight infants. Early diagnosis is difficult, and treatment is often delayed. The available data are insufficient to conclude that topical/oral prophylaxis (usually nystatin and/or miconazole) prevents invasive fungal infection or mortality in very low birth weight infants. Systemic antifungal agents (usually azoles) are increasingly used as prophylaxis against invasive fungal infection. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effect of prophylactic systemic antifungal therapy on mortality and morbidity

Prenatal predictors of mortality in very preterm infants cared for in the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network.

AIM: To identify antenatal and perinatal risk factors for in-hospital mortality of babies born within the Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network (ANZNN). METHODS: Data were collected prospectively as part of the ongoing audit of high-risk infants (birth weight <1500 g or gestation <32 weeks) admitted to all level III neonatal units in Australia and New Zealand. Antenatal and intrapartum factors to 1 min of age were examined in 11 498 infants with gestational age >24 weeks. Risk and protective factors for mortality were derived from logistic regression models fitted to 1998-9 data and val

Morbidity and mortality characteristics of infants hospitalized in the Pediatrics Department of the largest Turkish military hospital in 2001.

A descriptive study was conducted in the pediatric inpatient unit of Gulhane Military Medical Academy, to investigate the morbidity and mortality characteristics of 532 infants hospitalized between January 1 and December 31, 2001, for treatment purposes. Of the study participants, 55.8% were boys and 44.2% were girls. The most common cause of hospitalization was neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (19.7%). The most common admission month was January (12.4%). Of 532 infants, 510 (95.9%) were discharged, whereas 22 patients died in the hospital. Twenty-one patients died in the neonatal period, and respi

Endotracheal intubation at birth for preventing morbidity and mortality in vigorous, meconium-stained infants born at term.

BACKGROUND: On the basis of evidence from non-randomised studies, it has been recommended that all babies born through thick meconium should have their tracheas intubated so that suctioning of their airways can be performed. The aim is to reduce the incidence and severity of meconium aspiration syndrome. However, for term babies who are vigorous at birth endotracheal intubation may be both difficult and unnecessary. OBJECTIVES: To determine if endotracheal intubation and suction of the airways at birth in vigorous term meconium-stained babies is more beneficial than routine resuscitation incl

[Morbidity, mortality and late sequelae in extremely premature infants born in the Hvidovre Hospital, 1985-1991].

In the period 1985 to 1991, 80 infants with gestational age below 28 completed weeks were born at Hvidovre Hospital, Copenhagen and transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit of the hospital. The incidence of extreme prematurity was 3.6 0/00. Twenty-eight infants died during the neonatal period (35%) and nine infants died later in infancy (11.3%). Forty-three infants (54%) survived. Forty four percent of surviving infants had one or more sequelae related to their prematurity or neonatal complications, mainly blindness or reduced vision, cerebral palsy and mental retardation. [Influence of the mode of delivery on perinatal mortality in infants less than 32 weeks gestational age].

Survival rate of 96 low-birth-weight infants less than 32 weeks post-conceptional age at birth was studied in relation with the mode of delivery. Twenty-two infants were delivered by elective cesarean section because of abnormalities during pregnancy with 3 neonatal deaths. Seventy-four infants were born after untreatable premature onset of labor with 9 intrapartum and 7 neonatal deaths. Poor prognosis was associated with gestational age (less than 29 weeks), non cephalic vaginal delivery and multiple births. In these cases, cesarean section should be discussed.

Fetal and neonatal mortality of small-for-gestational age infants. A 15-year study of 381 cases.

Fetal and neonatal mortality of small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants in 1968-1982 were studied in the region of the University Central Hospital of Turku, Finland. During the study period, there were 254 fetal and 127 neonatal deaths in SGA infants. The fetal mortality rate of SGA infants declined from 49.9/1000 to 14.0/1000. The neonatal mortality rate of SGA infants declined from 23.8/1000 to 8.3/1000. The severely SGA infants with a birth weight below the 2.5th percentile had three times higher neonatal mortality rates than SGA infants with a birth weight between the 2.5th and the 10th pe

[Mortality and morbidity of newborn infants in intensive care (birth weight less than 1,501 grams)].

A comparative analysis of the mortality and morbidity of premature infants with a birthweight below 1.501 g, born in the years 1974, 1978 and 1981, is given. The mortality rate has remained unchanged in the years 1974 (when a neonatal intensive care unit was installed at the University Children's Hospital Graz) and 1981 with 33% and 32% respectively. The total number of admissions rose from 36 (1974) to 67 (1978) and 91 (1981). Simultaneously the number of patients, who needed neonatal intensive care increased. Whilst in 1974 only 2 of 24 surviving infants needed artificial ventilation, in 197

Smoked, smokeless, and poly-tobacco use during pregnancy in relation to infant mortality in Cambodia: Findings from a nationwide sample.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy is an established risk factor for adverse maternal, fetal, and infant outcomes. In contrast, maternal smokeless tobacco use (i.e. e-cigarettes, snus, betel quid, iqmik) during pregnancy has a more complex risk profile due to its potential use as a smoking cessation aid or to reduce the harm from smoking tobacco. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the association between smoked, smokeless, and poly-tobacco (smoked + smokeless) use during pregnancy and infant mortality, in a national sample of women in Cambodia. METHODS: Th…

Differences Between Rural and Urban Areas in Mortality Rates for the Leading Causes of Infant Death: United States, 2013-2015.

The leading causes of infant death vary by age at death but were consistent from 2005 to 2015 (1-6). Previous research shows higher infant mortality rates in rural counties compared with urban counties and differences in cause of death for individuals aged 1 year and over by urbanization level (4,5,7,8). No research, however, has examined if mortality rates from the leading causes of infant death differ by urbanization level. This report describes the mortality rates for the five leading causes of infant, neonatal, and postneonatal death in the United States across rural, small and medium urba…

Factors associated with infant mortality in Nepal: a comparative analysis of Nepal demographic and health surveys (NDHS) 2006 and 2011.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality is one of the priority public health issues in developing countries like Nepal. The infant mortality rate (IMR) was 48 and 46 per 1000 live births for the year 2006 and 2011, respectively, a slight reduction during the 5 years' period. A comprehensive analysis that has identified and compared key factors associated with infant mortality is limited in Nepal, and, therefore, this study aims to fill the gap. METHODS: Datasets from Nepal Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) 2006 and 2011 were used to identify and compare the major factors associated with infant morta…

Accidental ingestion of E-cigarette liquid nicotine in a 15-month-old child: an infant mortality case of nicotine intoxication.

Electronic cigarettes are novel tobacco products that are frequently used these days. The cartridge contains liquid nicotine and accidental poisoning, even with a small oral dose, endangers children. We present here a mortality case of a 15-month-old child who ingested liquid nicotine mistaking it for cold medicine. When the emergency medical technicians arrived, she was found to have pulseless electrical activity. Spontaneous circulation was restored after approximately 40 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The cotinine level in her urine was 1,716 ng/mL. Despite intensive supportive c

Mortality and morbidity in the city of Bern, Switzerland, 1805-1815 with special emphasis on infant, child and maternal deaths.

This article contributes to the research on demographics and public health of urban populations of preindustrial Europe. The key source is a burial register that contains information on the deceased, such as age and sex, residence and cause of death. This register is one of the earliest compilations of data sets of individuals with this high degree of completeness and consistency. Critical assessment of the register's origin, formation and upkeep promises high validity and reliability. Between 1805 and 1815, 4,390 deceased inhabitants were registered. Information concerning these individuals p
