Implementation of a comprehensive medication management service for radioiodine therapy patients at an oncology hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

IntroductionRadioiodine therapy (RIT) can be used in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), the most frequent type of thyroid cancer in Brazil. It requires continuous preparation and monitoring, which includes management of pharmacotherapy. Evaluating health issues and medications during the pre- and post-RIT period is essential, and comprehensive medication management (CMM) can be a valuable tool.ObjectiveThis study aimed to describe the implementation of the CMM service for DTC patients and submitted to RIT in a reference oncology hospital in Rio de Janeiro.MethodsDescriptive implementation

Diabetic foot disease management in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries: a scoping review protocol.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries face a substantial impact from the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus, which experts identify as a major public health challenge in the region. Despite the escalating burden of diabetes mellitus and its related complications, including diabetic foot disease (DFD), there are noteworthy knowledge gaps concerning the prevalence and trends of DFD in the GCC countries. Furthermore, there is insufficient understanding of the management of DFD within health care settings in this region. The objective of this scoping review is to comprehensively ass

Addressing uncertainty in hereditary colorectal cancer: the role of a regional expert multidisciplinary team meeting.

There is frequent uncertainty in both the precise quantification of risk, and the application of clinical interventions, designed to mitigate increased heritable colorectal cancer (CRC) susceptibility. We evaluated the role of a collaborative specialist multidisciplinary team meeting (MDM) for familial and hereditary CRC, led by the St Mark's Hospital Centre for Familial Intestinal Cancer specifically in supporting the clinical management of uncertainty. A retrospective thematic analysis of meeting outcomes from inception in June 2020 until March 2023 was performed. Descriptive statistics were

Prevention of Opioid Misuse and Abuse Through Effective Pain Management in Patients With Chronic Pain: An Umbrella Systematic Review.

Chronic pain is a condition that frequently affects patients and communities. There are several treatment options available, including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological. Opioid prescriptions have increased over the past few years, and long-term use of opioids leads to an increased risk of opioid misuse and death due to overdose. This systematic review discusses the effective pain management options in chronic non-cancer pain patients that may help prevent opioid use and misuse. We searched PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE

How should radiation be done for inflammatory breast cancer patients?-a narrative review of modern literature.

OBJECTIVE: This review highlights the considerations of the radiation oncologist when managing patients with inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) as well as the radiation oncologist's role as a member of the multi-disciplinary team. BACKGROUND: IBC makes up only 1-4% of all breast cancer diagnoses but incidence is increasing. IBC is diagnosed based on a constellation of clinical features, including the rapid onset of breast erythema and edema (peau d'orange) of one-third or more of the skin of the breast and with a palpable border to the edema. Most published IBC local-regional control rates are

Massive Localized Lymphedema: Analysis of Intraoperative Care.

Massive localized lymphedema (MLL) is rare, but as the prevalence of obesity in adults rises, it can be foreseen that cases will increase in prevalence. These patients are unable to ambulate and have uncontrollable rash and skin breakdown. Operative management for MLL is offered when nonsurgical measures are ineffective. The surgery can be difficult with ambiguous tissue planes saturated with lymphatic fluid, ill-defined margins, large arteries and dilated veins, and extensive intraoperative fluid and blood loss. We performed a retrospective chart review and analysis with a focus on the intrao

Management of Zone III Missile Injuries Involving the Carotid Artery and Cranial Nerves.

Carotid and cranial nerve injuries from zone III (high cervical/cranial base) missile injuries are rare and difficult to treat. We have treated five patients with such injuries. We present our management scheme, and compare it to the management of the same injuries in other reports. Five consecutive zone III missile injuries presented to our institution. Trauma assessment by the trauma team, followed by detailed neurological assessment and radiographs (angiogram and computed tomography) were obtained on admission. All patients presented with dysphagia and carotid artery injury with good collat

Protocolized Based Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Drains in Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord ischemia (SCI) resulting in paraplegia is a devastating complication associated with thoracic endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (TEVAR) whose incidence has significantly declined over time. In this review, we present our experience with a multidisciplinary clinical protocol for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drain management in patients undergoing TEVAR. Furthermore, we aimed to characterize complications of CSF drain placement in a large, single center experience of patients who underwent TEVAR. METHODS: This retrospective review is of patients undergoing TEVAR with and

From cells to sales: Advancing the commercialization of industrial biotech innovations.

Industrial biotechnology faces a paradox: Technological breakthroughs in synthetic biology, protein engineering and AI-supported process modelling are opening up real prospects for a bio-based chemical industry. Yet the gap between scientific potential and commercial viability remains wide and is rarely closed by technology alone. This study analyzes how promising biotech ventures successfully cross the threshold to commercialization. Based on interviews (n = 12) with experienced biotechnology investors, fund managers and founders in 2025 and 2026, as well as real-life case studies from the pa

Painting of 3D Models of Congenital Heart Disease as an Educational Tool for Pediatric Residents.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) models of congenital heart diseases have been used to teach cardiac anatomy to learners. Our team sought to determine whether the painting of 3D models could help pediatric residents better understand both the anatomy and physiology of complex congenital heart diseases. METHODS: This was a prospective assessment of pediatric resident perceptions regarding a novel teaching method on the 3 stages of palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. After attending a didactic session about the topic, they were provided with 3D models representing each stage. They

Advocating for drug development in newborn infants.

Neonatal care needs more robust guidance on pharmacotherapy, (formulation, dosage regimen, safety and efficacy information). This requires structured advocacy. We therefore discuss advocacy related to improving information about medicines including current practices, clinical trials, the current setting, and trial preparedness. This steps can improve neonatal drug development by generating evidence, particularly if a programmatic approach (identify dosing, eligibility criteria, and outcomes) to evidence generation is followed. Trial design should be guided by the intended use of the medicine a

Surgical management of large tracheoesophageal fistula in infants after button battery ingestion.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, an increase in severe and even fatal outcomes related to oesophageal or airway button battery (BB) ingestion by infants and small children has been reported. Extensive tissue necrosis caused by lodged BB can lead to major complications, including tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). In these instances, best treatment remains controversial. While small defects may warrant a conservative approach, surgery often remains inevitable in highly complex cases with large TEF. We present a series of small children that underwent successful surgical management by a multidisciplin
