The Pathogenesis of Preeclampsia: Hypoxia and the Unfolded Protein Response.

Early-onset preeclampsia remains a significant cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity; however, its multifactorial etiology is not yet fully elucidated. This narrative review aims to synthesize current evidence on the progression from placental ischemia to cellular stress, with a specific focus on how the unfolded protein response (UPR) drives the pathogenesis of early-onset preeclampsia. For a thematic synthesis of the literature, data from human clinical samples, animal models, and cell cultures were integrated to construct a comprehensive mechanistic model. At its core, a critical "viciou

ClpP protease modulates bacterial growth, stress response, and bacterial virulence in Brucella abortus.

The process of intracellular proteolysis through ATP-dependent proteases is a biologically conserved phenomenon. The stress responses and bacterial virulence of various pathogenic bacteria are associated with the ATP-dependent Clp protease. In this study, a Brucella abortus 2308 strain, ΔclpP, was constructed to characterize the function of ClpP peptidase. The growth of the ΔclpP mutant strain was significantly impaired in the TSB medium. The results showed that the ΔclpP mutant was sensitive to acidic pH stress, oxidative stress, high temperature, detergents, high osmotic environment, and iro

Funneliformis mosseae Modulates Root 14-3-3 Gene Expression to Enhance Drought Tolerance in Trifoliate Orange: A Molecular-Physiological Integration.

The 14-3-3 family proteins are involved in plant metabolism and stress signal transduction, while whether and how they contribute to the enhancement of host drought tolerance by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the 14-3-3 gene family (GRF) in trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) and analyze their responses in roots to drought and inoculation with the AM fungus Funneliformis mosseae, integrating molecular data with physiological assessments. Despite drought-inhibited AM fungal colonization and soil mycelium length, AM inoculation markedly increa

Role of plant nutritional balance under combined abiotic stress conditions, and stress mitigation strategies.

Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme temperature events, irregular rainfall patterns and periods of water deficit, which alter soil properties and limit crop performance. These factors often occur simultaneously with other adverse conditions, generating multifactorial stress scenarios that pose a major challenge for agricultural systems. This review examines the reduction and degradation of cropland during the first quarter of the 21st century. Despite this trend, global agricultural productivity has increased in recent decades, largely due to improved knowledge of crop nutrit

Integrated transcriptomic and functional trait responses reveal ecological strategy-associated biomass accumulation and allocation under drought in mulberry seedlings.

Drought alters both plant growth and biomass accumulation and allocation, but how molecular responses and functional traits jointly reflect these changes in woody plants remains insufficiently understood. We investigated whether plant ecological strategies, quantified using the competitive-stress tolerant-ruderal (CSR) framework, could provide an integrative description of drought-associated biomass responses in mulberry (Morus atropurpurea) seedlings. In this study, mulberry seedlings were maintained under well-watered, mild-drought, or moderate-drought conditions for 30 days, after which bio

The Impact of Stress on the Functioning and Survival of Transplanted Kidneys-Biological Mechanisms, Clinical Implications, and Therapeutic Perspectives.

Stress is well known to affect the immune system. However, in patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who underwent a kidney transplant (KT), the problem of stress appears to still be underestimated. The review aims to discuss the influence of chronic stress on the immune function and the relationship between chronic stress and the fate of a transplanted kidney. Therefore, we analyzed the relevant literature, searching for articles linking chronic stress to kidney transplant. Although the biology of stress is well documented in the literature, its impact on the fate of transplan

Glutathione and Jasmonic Acid Biosynthesis Coordinate Antioxidant and Hormonal Responses to Alleviate Lead Toxicity in Pogonatherum crinitum Roots.

Multiomics is increasingly valued as a strategy for investigating the regulatory mechanisms by which plants respond to adverse stress conditions. Currently, information on the molecular processes underlying plant responses to Pb stress, particularly those observed through an approach that combines proteomics and metabolomics, is lacking. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore functional correlations between Pb-responsive proteins and metabolites under Pb stress by performing label-free quantitative proteomics and untargeted metabolomics on the roots of the Pb hyperaccumulator Pogonather

High fat diet consumption and social instability stress impair stress adaptation and maternal care in C57Bl/6 dams.

Poor maternal diet and psychosocial stress represent two environmental factors that can significantly impact maternal health during pregnancy. While various mouse models have been developed to study the relationship between maternal and offspring health and behaviour, few incorporate multiple sources of stress that mirror the complexity of human experiences. Maternal high-fat diet (HF) models in rodents are well-established, whereas use of psychosocial stress interventions in female mice are still emerging. The social instability stress (SIS) paradigm, serves as a chronic and unpredictable for

Activation of the general stress response sigma factor SigB prevents competence development in Bacillus subtilis.

UNLABELLED: Seemingly simple bacteria mount intricate adaptive responses when exposed to physical stress or nutrient limitation, and the activation of these responses is governed by complex signal transduction networks. Upon entry into the stationary growth phase, the soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis may develop natural competence, form biofilms or stress-resistant cells, or ultimately trigger a cellular differentiation program leading to spore formation. Master regulators, such as Spo0A, ComK, SinR, and SigB, constantly monitor the bacterium's environment and then determine appropriate adapti

HOCPCA Exerts Neuroprotection on Retinal Ganglion Cells by Binding to CaMKIIα and Modulating Oxidative Stress and Neuroinflammation in Experimental Glaucoma.

Neuronal injury in glaucoma persists despite effective intraocular pressure (IOP) control, necessitating neuroprotective strategies for retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective role of the γ-hydroxybutyrate analog HOCPCA in a glaucoma model, focusing on its effects on CaMKII signaling, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammatory responses. Retinal tissue from high IOP animal models was analyzed via proteomics. In vitro mouse retinal explants were subjected to elevated pressure and oxidative stress, followed by HOCPCA treatment. HOCPCA significantly mitigate

Integrating Hormesis and Xenohormesis in Plants Through Fitness and Response Variables.

Hormesis is an adaptive response empirically characterized by a biphasic dose-response pattern, in which low or moderate levels of stress induce stimulatory responses whereas higher levels result in inhibitory or toxic effects. Although the biphasic dose-response pattern provides an empirical basis for identifying hormesis, it does not necessarily establish the adaptive significance of the observed response. Individual physiological, biochemical, or molecular variables may exhibit transient or ontogenetically dependent responses; therefore, fitness-related outcomes may provide an integrative c

A Neurotensin Brake on Exploratory Drive under Persistent Threat.

Avoidance behavior is an adaptive response that delays exploration to promote survival. Avoidance is enhanced by psychological stress and is a hallmark of many neuropsychiatric disorders. Neural circuits that control avoidance by integrating stressful stimuli and modulating exploratory behavior remain underexplored. Elucidating the functional dynamics of this highly conserved phenomenon and the underlying neural mechanism of avoidance is an important open-ended question, with relevance to understanding both innate behaviors and neuropsychiatric disorders. Using predator odor as an innate, chro

[The concept of allostasis and allostatic load: psychoneuroimmunological findings].

Classical theories have conceptualized stress as a reaction to threat to the homeostasis within the organism requiring an adaptive response. However, postulating mechanisms that could link such responses to long-term detrimental health outcomes remains difficult. The allostatic load concept enables us to think about how mediators can be protective in the short run but may have damaging effects when overused and/or not shut off. It further facilitates the formulation of cause-effects cascades to explain the link of dysregulations in stress mediators such as glucocorticoids and catecholamines an

Implication of the σE Regulon Members OmpO and σN in the ΔompA299-356-Mediated Decrease of Oxidative Stress Tolerance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Outer membrane protein A (OmpA) is the most abundant porin in bacterial outer membranes. KJΔOmpA299-356, an ompA C-terminal in-frame deletion mutant of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia KJ, exhibits pleiotropic defects, including decreased tolerance to menadione (MD)-mediated oxidative stress. Here, we elucidated the underlying mechanism of the decreased MD tolerance mediated by ΔompA299-356. The transcriptomes of wild-type S. maltophilia and the KJΔOmpA299-356 mutant strain were compared, focusing on 27 genes known to be associated with oxidative stress alleviation; however, no significant differe
