Autoimmune thyroid disease is a common side-effect of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment of viral hepatitis C. We have described three patients with hepatitis C for whom IFN-alpha and ribavirin were prescribed and who developed two successive phases of silent thyroiditis followed by hyperthryroidism relapse due to Graves' disease. These three men had no known history of familial or personal thyroid disease. Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare non-Langerhans histiocytosis with multisystem involvement. To date, there is no standard treatment for this disorder, and more than half of the patients succumb within 3 years. We report a case of congenital dyserythropoietic anaemia, type I, with severe pre- and postnatal manifestations. Exchange transfusions were required for fetal anaemia (3.5 g/dl) at 28 and 30 weeks of gestation. Twenty-nine late chronic and accelerated phase chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) patients were entered in a pilot study designed to test the therapeutic efficacy of treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and low-dose cytosine arabinoside (ARA-C). We successfully treated two patients with refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) with a weekly or monthly administration of alpha-interferon followed by short-course treatment with alpha-interferon.
