Neuromodulatory effect of transcranial direct current stimulation on cue reactivity and craving in young adults with internet gaming disorder: an event-related potential study.

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on cue reactivity and craving for game-related cues using event-related potentials (ERPs) in internet gaming disorder (IGD) patients. METHODS: At baseline, a series of game-related and neutral pictures were shown to both IGD and healthy controls (HCs) while ERPs were recorded. Late positive potentials (LPP) were used to investigate cue reactivity. During intervention, IGD patients received 10 sessions (two sessions/day for 5 consecutive days, 2 mA for 20 min/session) of tDCS to the left (anode stimula

Network analysis of parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction in adolescents.

Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parental involvement, parent-child relationships, emotional and behavioral problems, and social media addiction may interact in complex ways. This study aims to explore the network structure of these factors to identify key domains and their interconnections. A total of 668 adolescents participated in this study, with data collected in October 2024 through surveys. The Parental Involvement Scale, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), Parent-Child Closeness Scale, and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) were used to a

Evaluation of social media privacy, internet addiction in adolescents who are victims of sexual abuse and digital awareness in their parents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse is the exploitation of a child by an adult for sexual purposes. Many cases go undetected and can occur across all socioeconomic levels, ages, genders, and regions. With the rise of internet use, abuse is increasingly occurring online, with some online relationships escalating to in-person sexual contact between the victim and offender. OBJECTIVE: Our study hypothesizes that adolescents with high internet addiction and difficulty protecting their privacy online may be at greater risk for abuse, and that their parents may have low digital awareness. METHODS:

Untangling the role of emotion regulation in gambling and video gaming cravings: A replication and extension study.

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that urgency-the tendency to act rashly under intense positive or negative affect-reflects dysregulated incidental emotion regulation (ER). Urgency has been reported to predict the intensity and frequency of video gaming and gambling craving, but not the translation of craving onto severity of problem symptoms. However, the role of intentional ER strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, in craving control remains underexplored. METHOD: 303 regular gamblers and 355 regular video gamers were assessed on urgency traits, ER strat

Determinants and relationships of digital addiction, diet quality, and physical activity in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Digital addiction, defined as spending excessive time on digital devices and online platforms, is a global problem that particularly affects young people. This form of addiction can lead individuals to a sedentary lifestyle while also increasing the risk of them turning to unhealthy and ready-made foods. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of digital addiction among Turkish adolescents. We also aimed to determine the relationships between digital addiction, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, and physical activity, and to determine the extent to which these variables mutua

The relationship between proactive personality and college students' short-form video addiction: A chain mediation model of resilience and self-control.

BACKGROUND: With the explosive development of the short-form video (SFV) industry in recent years, the issue of SFV addiction among young people has attracted increasing attention from scholarship. Researchers have found that proactive personality is negatively associated with behavioral addiction. Additionally, SFV Apps tend to place users in a "filter bubble" to passively consume the pushed video content. Proactiveness could be an effective trait to resist the excessive use of SFVs. Thus, proactive personality may be a negative predictor of SFV addiction. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims a

Smartphone addiction and metabolic health risk in pediatrics.

UNLABELLED: Smartphone ownership among children and adolescents has risen sharply over the past decade, coinciding with a parallel rise in pediatric metabolic disorders, including obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, and early markers of metabolic syndrome. Whether these two trends are mechanistically related has become a question of growing clinical and public health relevance. This study synthesizes evidence on the association between problematic smartphone use in children and adolescents and metabolic health outcomes, with attention to the behavioral, neurobiological, and psychiatric

The effect of self-compassion on social media addiction among college students - The mediating role of gratitude: An observational study.

In contemporary society, social media pervades every aspect of daily life, offering significant benefits such as enhanced access to information, improved interconnectivity, and fostering community among its users. However, its usage, particularly when excessive, can lead to negative psychological outcomes, including the prevalence of social media addiction (SMA) among adolescents. While extensive research has been conducted on the phenomenon of SMA, there is a notable paucity of studies examining the link between individual levels of self-compassion and susceptibility to SMA. This study aims t

The relationships between short video addiction, subjective well-being, social support, personality, and core self-evaluation: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of short video addiction (SVA) is increasing among different populations, and its impact on the adolescent group has attracted research attention in recent years. To better explore the heterogeneity of individuals addicted to short videos and the antecedents of their addiction, the present study used quantitative research to conduct a latent profile analysis (LPA) of college students' SVA from the perspective of internal and external resources. METHODS: Referring to the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) theory, this study explores the relatio

Social Self-Efficacy and Internet Gaming Disorder Among Chinese Undergraduates: The Mediating Role of Alexithymia and the Moderating Role of Empathy.

As an increasingly serious social problem, Internet gaming disorder (IGD) of college students may be related to their social self-efficacy. However, the relationship and its internal mechanisms underlying are still unclear. The current study tested the mediating effect of alexithymia in the association between social self-efficacy and IGD, and whether this mediating process was moderated by empathy. Social Self-Efficacy Scale (PSSE), Chinese version of Internet Game Addiction Scale (IGAS-C), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and Interpersonal Response Scale (IRI-C) were adopted to examine the

A Chain Mediation Model of Basic Need Satisfaction and Self-Concept Clarity Between Harsh Parenting and Problematic Internet Use Among Adolescents.

This study presents a model of harsh parenting that has an indirect and direct effect on problematic Internet use (PIU) through the mediating process of basic need satisfaction and self-concept clarity. A sample of 490 Chinese middle-school adolescents completed anonymous questionnaires regarding harsh parenting, PIU, basic need satisfaction, and self-concept clarity during class sessions. After controlling the sex, grade, and history of Internet use, harsh parenting was positively related to PIU. Moreover, basic need satisfaction and self-concept clarity mediated the association between harsh

Internet gaming disorder and suicidal behaviors mediated by sleep disturbance: a large-scale school-based study in 135,174 Chinese middle school students.

Emerging research suggests a positive association between Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and suicidal behaviors. However, existing studies predominantly focus on suicidal ideation rather than suicide attempts and often do not adequately control for potential psychological confounders. The mechanism linking IGD to suicidality remains unclear. This study aims to assess the independent association between IGD and suicidal behaviors and to examine the mediating role of sleep disturbance among Chinese adolescents. We recruited 135,174 middle school students from Zigong City using cluster sampling.

Cardiovascular and pulmonary response in gaming disorder: A systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) is a recognized mental health condition associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation. While heart rate variability (HRV) has been studied, ventilatory responses remain poorly explored. This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of IGD on cardiovascular (HRV) and pulmonary (respiratory rate) parameters. METHODS: To conduct this systematic review, a literature search will be conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. We will include studies assessing HRV and respiratory rate in individuals aged ≥12 years with IGD. Studies withou
