Psychological interventions for adult earthquake-related post-traumatic stress disorder: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A minority of earthquake-exposed individuals develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often alongside comorbid depression and anxiety symptoms. No systematic review has examined psychological interventions for adults with substantial earthquake-related PTSD symptoms. AIMS: To synthesise studies evaluating psychological interventions for adult earthquake-related PTSD and conduct meta-analyses estimating overall effect sizes. METHOD: The review was pre-registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023441020). PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Scopus were searched for studies (last searc

Perinatal Depression: A Guide to Detection and Management in Primary Care.

INTRODUCTION: Existing guidelines for primary care clinicians (PCCs) on the detection and management of perinatal depression (PD) contain important gaps. This review aims to provide PCCs with a summary of clinically relevant evidence in the field. METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted by searching PubMed and PsycINFO for articles published between 2010 to 2023. Guidelines, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and/or observational studies were all examined. RESULTS: Screening with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale or Patient Health Questionnaire-9 followed by a diagnosti

A double-edged hormone: The moderating role of personality and attachment on oxytocin's treatment facilitation effect.

BACKGROUND: Studies exploring the potential augmenting effect of oxytocin for patients with mental disorders have thus far reported mixed effects. However, oxytocin's effect may differ across patients with different interpersonal characteristics. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of attachment and personality traits on the effect of oxytocin administration on the therapeutic working alliance and symptomatic change, among hospitalized patients with severe mental illness. METHODS: Patients (N = 87) were randomly assigned to receive oxytocin or placebo, as an add-on to psychotherap

Subtyping patients with binge-eating disorder by dietary restraint and negative affect: Characteristics and treatment outcome.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined patients with binge-eating disorder (BED) subtyped by dietary restraint (DR) and the negative affect (NA) dimension of depression, anxiety, hostility, and self-esteem, comparing clinical features and outcome of evidence-based psychological treatments. It was hypothesized that individuals with DR and high NA (DR-HNA) would have lower functioning and poorer immediate and long-term BED treatment outcomes compared to those with DR and low NA (DR-LNA). METHOD: Cluster analysis was conducted (n = 159) as a secondary analysis of data from a randomized group cognitive-b

Gender Biases in Estimation of Others' Pain.

Caregiving and other interpersonal interactions often require accurate perception of others' pain from nonverbal cues, but perceivers may be subject to systematic biases based on gender, race, and other contextual factors. Such biases could contribute to systematic under-recognition and undertreatment of pain. In 2 experiments, we studied the impact of perceived patient sex on lay perceivers' pain estimates and treatment recommendations. In Experiment 1 (N = 50), perceivers viewed facial video clips of female and male patients in chronic shoulder pain and estimated patients' pain intensity. Mu

Incremental Benefit-Cost of MOMCare: Collaborative Care for Perinatal Depression Among Economically Disadvantaged Women.

OBJECTIVE: Effectiveness of collaborative care for perinatal depression has been demonstrated for MOMCare, from early pregnancy up to 15 months postpartum, for Medicaid enrollees in a public health system. MOMCare had a greater impact on reducing depression and improving functioning for women with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than for those without PTSD. This study estimated the incremental benefit and cost and the net benefit of MOMCare for women with major depression and PTSD. METHODS: A randomized trial (September 2009 to December 2014) compared the MOMCare collaborative c

Collaborative Care for Perinatal Depression Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Women: Adverse Neonatal Birth Events and Treatment Response.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the effectiveness of a perinatal collaborative care intervention in moderating the effects of adverse neonatal birth events on risks of postpartum depressive symptoms and impaired functioning among women of lower socioeconomic status with antenatal depression. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with blinded outcome assessments was conducted in ten public health centers, comparing MOMCare (choice of brief interpersonal psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, or both) with intensive maternity support services (MSS-Plus). Participants had probable diagnoses of major dep

The bipolarity of light and dark: A review on Bipolar Disorder and circadian cycles.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar Disorder is characterized by episodes running the full mood spectrum, from mania to depression. Between mood episodes, residual symptoms remain, as sleep alterations, circadian cycle disturbances, emotional deregulation, cognitive impairment and increased risk for comorbidities. The present review intends to reflect about the most recent and relevant information concerning the biunivocal relation between bipolar disorder and circadian cycles. METHODS: It was conducted a literature search on PubMed database using the search terms "bipolar", "circadian", "melatonin", "cortis

Prenatal depression effects and interventions: a review.

This review covers research on the negative effects of prenatal depression and cortisol on fetal growth, prematurity and low birthweight. Although prenatal depression and cortisol were typically measured at around 20 weeks gestation, other research suggests the stability of depression and cortisol levels across pregnancy. Women with Dysthymia as compared to Major Depression Disorder had higher cortisol levels, and their newborns had lower gestational age and birthweight. The cortisol effects in these studies were unfortunately confounded by low serotonin and low dopamine levels which in themse

Experiential therapies including Chairwork: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

Chairwork refers to a set of experiential psychotherapeutic interventions in which the physical positioning of the chairs facilitates internal and interpersonal dialogue. This study is an attempt to rectify the lack of a systematic review of the research on the effectiveness of Chairwork by offering a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assess the effectiveness of Chairwork-based interventions used in various psychotherapeutic approaches for the treatment of psychological disorders, difficulties, and mental health conditions. It considers various psychotherapy modalit

Effectiveness of online family connections for family members of people with BPD: a naturalistic comparison with the face-to-face format.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a common condition with significant negative impacts on relatives due to its interpersonal instability and suicidal behaviors. Family Connections (FC) is currently the most empirically supported intervention for family members of individuals with BPD. However, access to FC remains limited. Online delivery could overcome geographic barriers, as digital formats have shown efficacy in psychotherapies for patients, though little is known about their effectiveness for family-oriented interventions. During the COVID-19 crisis, rapid adaptations

Study protocol for a randomized controlled effectiveness trial of THRIVE group and peer coaching to promote suicide recovery in crisis stabilization centers.

Crisis Stabilization Centers (CSCs) offer a person-centered, community-based alternative to Emergency Departments for suicide prevention. CSCs may facilitate the expansion of the 988 Suicide Prevention Lifeline by providing callers with places to go in communities to receive treatment. However, new, recovery-focused psychological interventions for suicide prevention that can be rapidly implemented in CSCs are needed to be effective. This pilot study examines the feasibility, acceptability, and target engagement of the Toward Recovery, Hope, Interpersonal Connection, Values, and Engagement (i.e

The phenomenology of psilocybin: transformative insights for research and clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Considering the increasing evidence supporting psilocybin's efficacy in therapeutic settings, it is essential to deepen our understanding of its subjective meanings and effects to enhance its integration into psychotherapy. Current knowledge is primarily based on psychometric assessments or unstructured personal reports, leaving a gap in the qualitative analysis of subjective psychedelic experiences and the resulting changes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the subjective psychedelic experience with psilocybin in a structured, objective, and non-judgmental way (Epoche),

Exploring termination setback in a psychodynamic therapy for panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Termination in psychodynamic therapy (PDT) is a potentially conflictual and turbulent phase for patients, with a risk for increases in symptoms. However, few studies of PDT have assessed symptoms frequently enough during the treatment to determine whether such setbacks are in fact common in PDT. METHOD: In a doubly randomized clinical preference trial, 217 adults, female = 163; M age = 34.8 (12.6), with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia were treated with panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP) or panic control treatment (PCT), a form of cognitive behavioral therap

Analyze This! Thematic Analysis: Hostility, Attribution of Intent, and Interpersonal Perception Bias.

Research suggests that aggressive individuals exhibit a strong tendency to attribute hostile intent to the behavior of others when confronted with an ambiguous social situation. The vignettes method has become a standard procedure to assess hostile attributions. Vignettes represent incomplete ambiguous social stories, in which the subjects experience a negative outcome and are asked to attribute intent to the provocateur's action. This article explores the ways in which subjects perceive ambiguous social situations and other people's intentions, their tendency to refer negative outcome to ones

Did national implementation of interpersonal counseling improve adolescent depression treatment pathways in primary care? Protocol for a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of evidence-based interventions is one of the proposed responses to increased demand for treatment of adolescent depression. While the efficacy of interpersonal psychotherapy to treat depression of adolescents (IPT-A) is well established, the shorter adolescent interpersonal counseling (IPC-A) was implemented in primary care in Finland due to better feasibility. We present a protocol for a prospective evaluation of whether implementation of IPC-A has improved the naturalistic treatment flow and outcome of adolescents with sustained depression. We will evaluate the co

Love Yourself as a Person, Doubt Yourself as a Therapist?

OBJECTIVE: There are reasons to suggest that the therapist effect lies at the intersection between psychotherapists' professional and personal functioning. The current study investigated if and how the interplay between therapists' (n = 70) professional self-reports (e.g., of their difficulties in practice in the form of 'professional self-doubt' and coping strategies when faced with difficulties) and presumably more global, personal self-concepts, not restricted to the professional treatment setting (i.e., the level of self-affiliation measured by the Structural Analysis of Social Behaviour (

Effect of metacognitive interpersonal therapy on brain structural connectivity in borderline personality disorder: Results from the CLIMAMITHE randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we showed that Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy (MIT) is effective in improving clinical symptoms in borderline personality disorder (BPD). Here, we investigated whether the effect of MIT on clinical features is associated to microstructural changes in brain circuits supporting core BPD symptoms. METHODS: Forty-seven BPD were randomized to MIT or structured clinical management, and underwent a clinical assessment and diffusion-weighted imaging before and after the intervention. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean, radial, and axial diffusivities maps were computed using

Depression and its Treatment in Late Life.

Depression in late life is associated with poorer quality of life and higher mortality. Pain, chronic illness, loneliness, loss of physical abilities, grief, cognitive impairment, and socioeconomic disadvantage all increase the risk of depression in this age group. Treatment for depression in late life includes antidepressant medications, cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy. The use of virtual reality is also proposed as a potential new treatment for depression that could be made available in aged care settings, and early evidence holds promise. Dif
