Relationships between interpersonal trauma, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, and other mental health problems in girls in compulsory residential care.

This cross-sectional study examined the relationships (using structural equation modeling) between exposure to early-onset interpersonal trauma, symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), symptoms of complex PTSD, and other mental health problems. The participants were 92 girls recruited from 3 residential treatment facilities. Exposure to early-onset interpersonal trauma was directly related to mental health problems and symptoms of PTSD mediated the relationship between exposure to early-onset interpersonal trauma and mental health problems. Symptoms of complex PTSD did not significan

Promoting a Sense of Belonging Among Care-Experienced Young People: Insights From a Scoping Review.

Care-experienced young people (CEYP)'s sense of belonging is challenged by systemic instability of frequent placement and support networks changes. Belonging is critical for well-being and identity development, however, there are no known reviews scoping the available information on CEYP's belonging development. This scoping review aimed to identify what features aid the development of CEYP's sense of belonging. JBI scoping review methodology guided the search for English qualitative studies on CEYP's belonging experiences. A framework analysis using Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems model (

Individual and collective gains from cooperation and reciprocity in a dynamic-network Prisoner's Dilemma driven by extraversion, openness, and agreeableness.

How do stable personality differences shape cooperation when social ties can form and dissolve? We model a repeated Prisoner's Dilemma on an endogenous network in which three continuous Big Five traits map to transparent local mechanisms: Extraversion sets a target number of partners, Openness determines how broadly agents search beyond friends-of-friends, and Agreeableness sets a baseline willingness to cooperate. At each encounter, agents combine this baseline with the partner's directly observed history; there are no trait labels, gossip, or global reputations. Ties form when agents are und

Synthetic love in the digital age: AI-mediated emotional investment and gendered romantic dependence.

Digital technology has transformed romantic relationships, influencing men's and women's emotional investment differently. Drawing on "Romantic Relationships Matter More to Men than to Women," this commentary examines how artificial intelligence (AI)-driven dating, social and virtual platforms reshape partner search and mourning. It analyses synthetic love-from digital mediation to AI companions-arguing that these technologies may reinforce male emotional dependency and heighten post-breakup vulnerability.

No Evidence for Agent-Patient Role Attribution in Human Infants, Human Adults, and Guinea Baboons (Papio papio).

Languages describe "who is doing what to whom" by distinguishing the event roles of agent (doer) and patient (undergoer), but it is debated whether they result from nonlinguistic representations that may already exist in preverbal infants and nonhuman animals. The phenomenon of causal perception, where the subsequent movements of two objects A and B evoke the impression of A launching B, is a simple depiction of an agent-patient relation. The seminal study by Leslie and Keeble from 1987 proposed that infants of 6 months old may be able to attribute agent and patient roles to such causal displa

The asymmetric structure of male-female bonding explains gender differences in relationship dependence.

Wahring et al. demonstrate that men depend more on romantic relationships than women, contradicting conventional wisdom. The Tie-Up Theory explains this through fundamental asymmetries in bonding systems: men's receptive emotional area channels emotional needs primarily toward romantic partners, while women's active emotional area enables spontaneous emotional connections across multiple relationships. This biobehavioral architecture, not mere socialization, explains men's greater relationship striving, health benefits from partnership, reluctance to initiate breakups, and severe post-dissolut

Early sociomoral reasoning encompasses more than interpersonal relationships.

Thomas's account suggests that infants are limited to reasoning about interpersonal relationships. We argue that this account fails to do justice to infants' sociomoral reasoning. We describe an alternative account that grants infants expectations of harm avoidance, ingroup support, authority, fairness, and reciprocity. We highlight differences between the two accounts and suggest research directions for moving beyond these differences.

Couples Sharing Sleep and Sickness: Dyadic Sleep-Wake Patterns, Health Consequences, and Intervention Efficacy in Cancer Patient-Caregiver Dyads-A Systematic Review and Preliminary Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are prevalent among cancer patient-caregiver dyads, yet their interdependent sleep patterns remain understudied. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize evidence on dyadic sleep-wake patterns, health consequences (physical, psychological, and relationship health), and the effectiveness of dyadic intervention (intervention delivered to both members in the dyad) on sleep outcomes in cancer patient-caregiver pairs. METHODS: Following JBI guidelines, we searched five databases (Cochrane Library, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, EMBASE) for studies asses

A Systematic Review of Lived Experiences of Receiving a Diagnosis of ADHD in Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: With rising numbers of adults seeking and receiving ADHD diagnoses, understanding their first-hand experiences of the diagnostic process is key for sensitive support and service design. This systematic review collates, evaluates and synthesises the existing evidence-base on lived experiences of adult ADHD diagnosis. METHOD: Keyword searches of six databases generated 10,357 citations, which were subjected to a systematic screening process that identified 21 relevant studies. Findings were analysed using thematic synthesis. RESULTS: Analysis generated three overarching themes, elab

Child perceptions of note-taking in forensic interviews.

BACKGROUND: In child maltreatment investigations, forensic interviewers must elicit accurate narratives while prioritizing children's wellbeing in a safe environment that minimizes distress. While note-taking may help reduce suggestive questioning and improve disclosure accuracy, research in adult clinical settings shows mixed effects on comfort, rapport, and perceptions of the interviewer. Little is known about how children experience note-taking, or how it affects their emotional wellbeing and sense of safety. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate children's perceptions of behavioural an

Beyond Fear: Disgust, Anger, and the Affective Core of Interpersonal Phobias.

Interpersonal phobias-used here as an analytic label for enduring aversive orientations toward persons or groups, such as xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and ageism-are often framed primarily as fear- or anxiety-driven. That view captures vigilance and avoidance, but it does not fully explain why such aversions are also expressed in the language of contamination, revulsion, exclusion, social cleansing, and sometimes violence. I argue that interpersonal phobias are better understood through a distinction among fear, anger, and disgust than through a fear-centered account alone. Fea

Deliberate memory display can enhance conveyed value.

Letting someone else know that you value their presence, characteristics, effort or activities is central to building and maintaining human relationships. We investigated whether deliberate memory display is an effective means to convey such value. We examined these questions in the context of a simulated job interview (Experiments 1, 2 and 3, total N = 404) and a simulated 'ice breaker' exercise between new acquaintances (Experiment 4, total N = 156). Across experiments, results consistently indicated that memory display was not only an effective method of conveying value, but that memory dis

Many-strategy games in groups with relatives and the evolution of coordinated cooperation.

Humans often cooperate in groups with friends and family members with varying degrees of genetic relatedness. Past kin selection can also be relevant to interactions between strangers, explaining how the cooperation first arose in the ancestral population. However, modelling the effects of relatedness is difficult when the benefits of cooperation scale nonlinearly with the number of cooperators (e.g., economies of scale). Here, we present a direct fitness method for rigorously accounting for kin selection in n-player interactions with m discrete strategies, where a genetically homophilic group

Intertwined Friendships: How Older Women Navigated Couple Friendships and Individual Friendships Alongside Romantic Partners.

This study examined how older women's friendships were intertwined with their opposite-sex romantic partners, and their friendships, via interviews using a constructivist, grounded theory approach. Participants (N = 19) were women from the Northeastern United States, had at least some college, and all were non-Hispanic White. Theoretical coding led to two main themes: Friendship Level: Couple Versus Individual and Conflicts and Differences: Gendered Dynamics. Within Friendship Level, couple activities such as vacations and dinners were mentioned as key activities, along with the women's role i

What About Love? A Review of Interventions for Patients With Heart Disease and Their Intimate Partners: Recommendations for Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Social relationships, particularly the quality of intimate partnerships, play a significant role in cardiovascular outcomes and recovery. While most cardiac care focuses on individual patients, couples-based approaches may offer additional benefits to support behavior change and emotional adjustment. However, their effectiveness remains unclear. This review evaluates the effectiveness of couples-based interventions on modifiable cardiovascular risk factors, cardiac outcomes, mental health, and relationship quality (RQ) in adults with diagnosed heart disease and their partners. We reviewed rand

On the neural networks of self and other bias and their role in emergent social interactions.

Extensive research has documented the brain networks that play an integral role in bias, or the alteration and filtration of information processing in a manner that fundamentally favors an individual. The roots of bias, whether self- or other-oriented, are a complex constellation of neural and psychological processes that start at the most fundamental levels of sensory processing. From the millisecond information is received in the brain it is filtered at various levels and through various brain networks in relation to extant intrinsic activity to provide individuals with a perception of reali

Conceptualising the everyday harm experienced by people with cognitive disability: A scoping review of microaggression and emotional and psychological abuse.

BACKGROUND: Many people with disability experience harm in everyday interactions that can leave them feeling insulted, degraded, silenced, or rejected. We adopt the term "everyday harm" to describe this underexplored form of harm. METHOD: The purpose of this scoping review was to assess how the literature on microaggression and emotional and psychological abuse contributes to an understanding of everyday harm and misrecognition. RESULTS: Microaggression and emotional and psychological abuse occur at an interpersonal level and are influenced by organisational structures and attitudes, underpi
