Does the Presence of Endometrial Polyp Predict Colorectal Polyp?

INTRODUCTION: Endometrial polyps (EPs) and colorectal polyps (CPs) are common disorders and the incidence of both increase rapidly with aging. CPs are focal lesions and incidence increases with age. AIM: In this study, we aimed to analyze retrospectively the relationship between the EPs and CPs sharing similar clinical and genetic factors in their etiopathogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was retrospectively performed between 2010 and 2013 and it included patients diagnosed to have eEPs. The study group and the control group consisted of patients who were diagnosed with or without

Benefits of 'clean sweep' in Peutz-Jeghers patients.

OBJECTIVE: Laparotomy is the treatment of choice in Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome (PJS) patients for endoscopically irretrievable symptomatic polyps and polyp-related complications. During the last decade, we have operated on majority of the PJS patients with the purpose of removing all the gastrointestinal polyps (clean sweep), when an operation was indicated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of clean sweep technique on the need for repeated surgery compared to a problem focused approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients with PJS treated in our institution since 1964 were studied. …

Comparison of intraoperative enteroscopy and double-balloon enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is an enteroscopy method that allows examination and treatment of the small bowel. Intraoperative enteroscopy (IOE) was the only possibility of endoscopic treatment for patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) before the DBE era. PJS is an inherited, autosomal dominant disorder distinguished by hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract and pigmented mucocutaneous lesions. PJS predisposes sufferers to various malignancies. Bleeding, obstruction, and intussusception are common complications in patients with PJS. The goal of this study was c

Case Report: Endoscopic resection of giant colonic pedunculated polyps in patients with AIDS using a novel nylon rope and titanium clip technique.

The three patients with AIDS were all male, aged between 56 and 67 years. One also had liver cirrhosis. They presented to the Chengdu Public Health Clinical Medical Center with a history of several months of blood in the stool. Colonoscopy revealed large pedunculated polyps in the sigmoid colon, with the largest measuring 5 cm and the smallest 3.5 cm. The polyps nearly completely obstructed the lumen. The long, thick stems were freely mobile within the narrow lumen, making it difficult to capture sufficient tissue with the inner ring of the forceps. The entire colon was examined with the aid o

Polypoid intestinal metaplasia of the external urethral meatus.

A 33-year-old male patient presented with a 1.5-cm polypoid lesion at the edge of the urethral meatus that showed a gross appearance similar to that of a urethral caruncle in the female. The histological features revealed a superficially ulcerated lesion composed of colonic-type mucosal glands with focal regenerative atypia. This case appears to be the first reported one on an intestinal-type polyp in this site. The patient had no further problems after excisional biopsy.

Spectrum of pathologies in cases of intestinal obstruction & perforation based on histopathological examination of resected intestine - Report from a third world country.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cases presenting with intestinal perforation and obstruction constitute a substantial work load on our surgical service. Etiologies vary in underdeveloped and developed countries. Histopathological examination of resected intestine is expected to provide the definite evidence of the underlying etiology- guiding a better health care planning for preventive measures. Our objective was to study the spectrum of histopathological findings in resected intestines from cases of intestinal obstruction and perforation in our local population to document the underlying etiology.

Metastatic breast cancer presenting as an incidental colon polyp on screening colonoscopy.

Metastatic spread of breast cancer to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is uncommon. When it does occur, it is typically associated with invasive lobular carcinoma and most often involves the stomach and intestinal wall, though the colon may be involved in rare instances. We present a unique case of metastatic breast cancer diagnosed via a colonic polyp found during routine screening colonoscopy. This case illustrates an unusual presentation of metastatic breast cancer.

Medical management update: Peutz Jeghers syndrome.

Peutz Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by hamartomatous polyposis and distinct mucocutaneous pigmentation. PJS is associated with an increased risk for several cancers and other complications such as small intestine intussusception, short bowel syndrome, and anemia. Medical management mainly consists of treatment of the polyps and surveillance. This medical management update will review clinical concepts, therapeutic advances, and emphasize features of PJS important to the oral health care provider.

The Application of Core Needle Biopsy Through the Trocar Hole in the Surgical Operation of Endoscopically Unresectable Giant Colon Polyps: A Systematic Review Study.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to investigate the application of core needle biopsy through the trocar hole during surgery on endoscopically unresectable giant colon polyps. METHODS: The clinical data of 51 patients with endoscopically unresectable giant colon polyps from May 2016 to May 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The primary observational outcomes were two comparative analyses of pathologic results, using the kappa index: comparison of the pathologic results from the preoperative colonoscopy and the postoperative pathologic results and comparison of the intraoperative pathologic resu

Efficacy and safety of eflornithine (CPP-1X)/sulindac combination therapy versus each as monotherapy in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP): design and rationale of a randomized, double-blind, Phase III trial.

BACKGROUND: Molecular studies suggest inhibition of colorectal mucosal polyamines (PAs) may be a promising approach to prevent colorectal cancer (CRC). Inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) using low-dose eflornithine (DFMO, CPP-1X), combined with maximal PA export using low-dose sulindac, results in greatly reduced levels of normal mucosal PAs. In a clinical trial, this combination (compared with placebo) reduced the 3-year incidence of subsequent high-risk adenomas by >90 %. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) is characterized by marked up-regulation of ODC in normal intestinal epithe

[Peutz-Jeghers syndrome].

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominant inherited disorder, which is characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentations, gastrointestinal polyposis and an increased risk of cancer. It is caused by germline mutations in the LKB1 tumour suppressor gene, as a result of which hamartomatous polyps can develop already at an early age, which may cause various complications, including abdominal pain, anaemia, and acute intestinal obstruction. Patients have an increased risk of developing cancer, in the gastroinstestinal tract and in other organs. As a result of the risk of complications related

DNA analysis and DNA ploidy in gastric cancer and gastric precancerous lesions.

Gastric cancer (GCa) is still a common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, despite improved diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Hence, early diagnosis has critical importance. Flow cytometry reveals rapid and reproducible quantification of nuclear DNA content of disaggregated tissues and assessment of its significance in various malignant and precancerous lesions. A total of 121 patients with GCa, chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), gastric polyps, intestinal metaplasia (IM) and gastric dysplasia and 36 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Flow cytometric measurements of DNA

Crohn's disease and a gastrointestinal stromal tumor in an 81-year-old man--a rare coincidence.

We describe an 81-year old man presenting with ileus and two rare, pathologically distinct entities: gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) and Crohn's disease. Within Meckel's diverticulum a polypous tumor, 3 cm in diameter, with preserved lumen was found. In the area of the terminal ileum, coecum and colon ascendens inflamed bowel loops were fixed together with fibrous adhesions. Partial resection of the ileum with end-to-end anastomosis and right hemicolectomy with resection of the terminal ileum and end-to-end ileotransverse anastomosis were performed. Pathohistological and immunohistochemi

Epidermoid cysts, polyposis coli and Gardner's syndrome.

One hundred and ninety-six members of 15 families with Gardner's syndrome were investigated to determine the type of skin cyst that is part of this syndrome. These were shown to be epidermoid cysts and not pilar cysts or steatocystoma multiplex. They were solitary or multiple and seldom large and disfiguring. The skin cysts often occurred before the intestinal polyps were detectable. The presence of epidermoid cysts in children should be an indication for sigmoidoscopy when the child reaches the age of 14 years, and at 3-yearly intervals thereafter up to the age of 30 years, whether or not the…

A giant Brunner's gland hamartoma being treated as a pedunculated polyp: a case report.

BACKGROUND: With the development and application of endoscopic technology, most pedunculated polyps can be absolutely resected with a complete specimen by hot snare polypectomy (HSP). Brunner's gland hamartoma (BGH) is a rare benign small bowel tumor. The majority of BGH measuring about 2 cm in diameter, rarely larger than 5 cm. Most patients are asymptomatic, some may present with gastrointestinal hemorrhage or intestinal obstruction. Symptomatic larger lesions leading to bleeding or obstruction should be excised either endoscopically or surgically. Whether it is safe and effective that remov

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome: A case report and review of the literature.

Cronkhite -Canada Syndrome (CCS) is a rare non-hereditary disease characterized by multiple polyps in the alimentary tract and ectoderm changes, and there is no clearly diagnostic criteria and treatment methods. A 55-year-old Chinese woman was admitted to our hospital with diarrhea. She was diagnosed with Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome (CCS). The clinical symptoms of the patient included diarrhea, nausea, retching, anorexia, weight loss, and we found that she had alopecia, onychatrophy, rampant caries and skin pigmentation from the physical examination. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple
