[Contact allergies to corticosteroids. Prevalence, cross-reactions and methods of detection].

Topical corticosteroids (CS) are frequently used to treat of allergic contact dermatitis, so that their own potential for sensitization is rarely detected. However, increasing numbers of hypersensitivity reactions to corticosteroids have been reported during the last 10 years, and allergic skin reactions to over 50 particular compounds have been observed. CS must now be regarded as a rather frequent contact allergen, the prevalence being twice as high in women as in men. Contact allergy to CS is clinically characterized by a chronic and persistent, corticosteroid-resistant dermatitis. In gener

Mantoux Test as a model for a secondary immune response in humans.

The Mantoux Test (MT) is a classical delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to the intradermal injection of tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD). It represents a cutaneous T cell mediated memory recall immune response. The test is typically used to determine immunity to tuberculosis in humans and positive reactions develop in individuals previously exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and those immunised with the Bacillus of Calmette and Guérin (BCG) vaccine. In view of its relative accessibility human skin represents a convenient tissue for the investigation of human immune re

Life-threatening fish allergy successfully treated with immunotherapy.

Manifestations of fish allergy can include near-fatal anaphylactic reaction. In very sensitive patients, fish odors and cooking vapors may have some allergenic activity. We reported a case of life-threatening fish allergy in a girl of 39 months referred for three episodes of Quincke edema with wheezing, cyanosis and severe urticaria after fish consumption or inhalation. Reagins were found against codfish and direct skin prick test with fresh food (codfish) showed important local reaction. Strict avoidance of fish in the diet is usually the only recommended procedure. However, in this particula

[Allergic enteropathy. Intestinally-mediated fungus allergy].

This article reports on a 53-year-old woman suffering from recurrent diarrhea since 1980 who, in November 1988, was admitted to the Medical Department of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with four to eight loose to liquid stools a day. Since January 1988, in addition to abdominal symptoms, including meteorism and recurrent abdominal pain, intermittent bouts of fever of up to 40 degrees C lasting six to eight hours and frequently occurring in the evening, had been noted. The patient's symptoms improved at weekends and during the holidays. Since 1977, she had been employed at a cheese counte

[Dandruff--an atopic sign?].

Dandruff is a sign of low specificity but high sensitivity for atopic constitution. Of 32 (40%) patients consulting the clinic for other reasons than dandruff, atopic dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis, 13 had raised IgE PRIST values of greater than 120 IU/ml. In only 6 (19%) of these patients was screening for atopy completely negative (family and personal history, total and specific IgG, prick test).

Pre-purchase screening for Coxiella burnetii in small ruminants: farm acceptance and field evaluation identify the ex-vivo interferon-γ assay as a promising tool.

INTRODUCTION: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a disease posing significant zoonotic risk and economic impact, particularly in small ruminants. Screening prior to flock introduction is essential for disease control and prevention, especially in breeding males, given their potential role in pathogen transmission. METHODS: This study combined a survey of small ruminant farmers with a field evaluation to explore the feasibility of pre-purchase screening and to compare the performance of four diagnostic tests: real-time qPCR, antibody ELISA, intradermal testing, and an ex-vivo interferon-

Safety and efficacy of a carboxymethyl chitosan dermal injection device for the treatment of skin defects: a first-in-man, pilot, comparative, split-body study.

Injectable soft-tissue devices are increasingly used for improving skin defects and deficiencies related to ageing. To assess the safety and efficacy of KIO015, a new injectable soft-tissue device formulated with carboxymethyl chitosan for the intradermal treatment of skin defects associated with ageing. Twenty-two subjects (40-65 years) were randomized to receive injections in the neckline of KIO015 and a non-cross-linked HA-based device, and were followed for up to 10 months. Injection site reactions (ISRs) and adverse events (AEs) were documented. Skin improvement was assessed instrumentall

Skin reactions to intradermal neuromuscular blocking agent injections: a randomized multicenter trial in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Numerous reports confirm the performance of intradermal tests for the diagnosis of anaphylaxis during anesthesia; however, there is controversy over their diagnostic value regarding the newer neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs). METHODS: One hundred eleven healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to receive intradermal injections of two NMBAs, at five increasing concentrations. A concentration was considered as a reactive concentration when it led to a positive reaction in more than 5% of the subjects. These concentrations were compared with the maximal concentration recommende…

Studies on the sensitization of animals with simple chemical compounds. 13. Sensitization of guinea pigs with picric acid.

A method of establishing regular and intense sensitivity to picric acid is described, based upon an initial sensitization by a "split-adjuvant" technique in which the intradermal injection of mycobacteria in paraffin oil precedes or follows the administration of allergen to the same sites. When subsequent contact applications of picric acid are later made, the degree of sensitivity rises in steps such that reactivity occurs in tests made with low concentrations of picric acid, in the range of 0.06-0.006% but varying somewhat from one experiment to another. This heightening of picric acid react

Preliminary studies on the inflammatory actions of the venoms of some Australian spiders.

Experiments were performed using an anaesthetised rat model to investigate the local inflammatory responses produced by intradermal injections of crude venom gland extracts from a number of Australian spiders, namely, Phonognatha graeffei, Delena cancerides, Isopeda montana, Badumna insignis, Lampona cylindrata, Steatoda grossa, S. capensis Hann. All of the venom gland extracts tested, with the exception of that from S. capensis, produced increases in vascular permeability consistent with acute inflammatory responses. The responses primarily involved the activation of 5-HT receptors, since the

Anaphylaxis to Haemaccel and cross reactivity to Gelofusin.

A recent change from Haemaccel to Gelofusin as the preferred colloid for resuscitation in our region caused us to review patients who were known to be allergic to Haemaccel. As Gelofusin and Haemaccel are both modified gelatine, it seemed likely that cross reactivity could occur. Two patients who had been diagnosed previously as having had anaphylactic reactions to Haemaccel were tested intradermally with dilutions of 1/100 of Haemaccel and Gelofusin. Both patients showed similar positive reactions to each agent. It appears that patients who are known to be allergic to Haemaccel are probably a

Hypersensitivity to pollen of Olea europaea in Israel.

The incidence of skin-tested sensitivity to olive pollen allergens among subjects with suspected atopic respiratory allergy was investigated in various populations of Israelis. This incidence was correlated with the olive cultivars, with the abundance of trees in the patient's neighborhoods, and with the history of exposure of the studied populations to olive pollen. Positive skin reactions to olive pollen, among atopic patients of the Jewish population, is rather high where olive trees are abundant (66%), and lower (29%) where trees are scarce (P < 0.003). Sensitization was significantly lowe

[Urticaria and "aspirin intolerance"--part of an interdisciplinary pathogenetic principle? (author's transl)].

Like the so-called "aspirin asthma", the aspirin-induced provocation of chronic urticaria is a symptom of the intolerance syndrome. This may also be induced by various other drugs, particularly by indomethacin and food additives. The intolerance syndromes of the "Aspirin type", however, must be assigned to the "anaphylactoid reactions" in man which also include the non-immunologic reactions to radiographic contrast media and colloids in blood substitutes. It has not yet been investigated in how far the mechanisms of these three clinical types of anaphylactoid reactions are similar or identical
