Schiff base receptor 1a has been synthesised and attached to the surface of preformed CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots (QDs) to form QD-conjugate 2a. While 1a was determined to be selective for Mg2+, 2a demonstrated selectivity for both K+ and Ca2+ when tested against a range of physiologically and environmentally relevant cations by changes in the fluorescence spectra. A new simple chemiluminescent method for the determination of chlortetracycline (Chlor-TC), oxytetracycline (Oxy-TC) and doxycycline (Doxy-TC) is described. The influence of Ni2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ on electron transport system (ETS) activity of anaerobic 2-chlorophenon degradation sludge, as well as the effect of acclimation on microbial resistance to metallic toxicity, was investigated. Solubility plays a key role in Cr (VI) carcinogenicity, with the most potent carcinogens being water-insoluble or 'particulate'. Kinetics studies are reported of the reactions of benzylidene benzylamine 4a, and of benzylidene allylamine 4b, with cyanide in aqueous buffers to give the corresponding [small alpha]-aminonitriles. We have directly observed reversal of the polarity of charged surfaces in water upon the addition of trivalent and quadrivalent ions using atomic force microscopy. The bulk concentration of multivalent ions at which charge inversion reversibly occurs depends only very weakly on the chemical composition, surface structure, size, and lipophilicity of the ions, but is very sensitive to their valence. These results support the theoretical proposal that spatial correlations between ions are the driving mechanism behind charge inversion.

A systematic mass spectrometric study of 10 thiazidic diuretics and related compounds was undertaken by mass spectrometry (MS) with electrospray ionization in the negative ion mode. The effects of copper ions on the uptake of some essential metals in the biomass and the electrooptical properties of cell suspensions of the nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium Azospirillum brasilense sp. 245 were studied. Copper cations were shown to be effectively taken up by the cell biomass from the culture medium.
