Aquatic pollution by tributyltin (TBT) is of concern because of its high toxicity to marine life. TBT loadings of estuarine sediments may remain elevated because of long flushing times in estuaries due to their enclosed physicality. The Tolka Estuary, Co. This is the first attempt to systematically record haematological malignancies in Northern Ireland. The methods are identical to a similar effort in other parts of the UK, except that an independent cross check with a cancer registry source was not possible. In addition problems with the census may create differences. Generally, the rates for the leukaemias are slightly lower than in England and Wales, except for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia whilst non-Hodgkin's lymphoma rates are higher. It remains to be seen how stable this situation is as further data are accumulated.

Our objective was to describe the management of oral cancer and pre-cancer as stated by primary care dentists and their views on screening. We conducted a survey of all general dental practitioners and community dentists in Northern Ireland (n = 635), to which 428 replied (response rate: 67%). 94% stated that examination of the oral soft tissues constituted part of their usual practice during the regular dental check-up. alpha 1 antitrypsin or protease inhibitor (Pi) phenotyping was carried out on 111 coeliac disease patients (CD) and 250 controls. The Pi MM phenotype was present in 95 (85.6%) of the coeliacs and 225 (90%) of the controls. The groups did not differ significantly with regard to Pi phenotypes. In the CD group the Pi Phenotype did not relate to HLA B8 or DR3 status. Associated diseases in the CD patients did not correlate with Pi phenotype.

The present study was undertaken to examine the response rate of thyrotoxicosis in patients with diffuse toxic goitre to thiouracil drug treatment for 1 year in an Irish population, reported to have a low iodine intake. Evidence exists that a low iodine intake is associated with a high long-term remission rate for drug treatment of diffuse toxic goitre. Seventy-five patients participated with 45% of patients entering into long-term remission which has been maintained for a mean of 52.5 +/- 38.8 months. OBJECTIVE: Despite scientific evidence on the environmental causes of obesity, policies that target these causes frequently face public opposition. This study investigates the mental model that the public hold about obesity, including perceptions of the causes, consequences and responsibility for obesity, alongside support for different preventive policies.
