Six hundred seventy isolates from children with Group A streptococcal infections from 1981 through 1990 were typed serologically and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. There were 479 isolates from patients with pharyngitis, 133 from those with scarlet fever, 35 from those with suppurative infection and 23 from those with nonsuppurative disease. The prevalent M serotypes were 12, 4, 1, 3 and 28. None of the 670 isolates were resistant to penicillin G and cephalexin. Ingested shotgun pellets were found in 13 of 56 hunter-killed wild waterfowl between October and December 1991 from two hunting grounds in Japan. Four of 33 other waterfowl found dead in lightly hunted areas between January 1991 and March 1992 were diagnosed as having lead poisoning. We propose that lead poisoning maybe a threat to waterfowl in Japan.

To establish the effective mass screening projects for the breast cancer, our study group cosponsered by the Welfare Ministry was organized by 11 regional groups. From 1968 to 1986, 643, 513 women at the initial screening and 719, 189 women at the subsequent screening were examined by physical examination. The results of the first multi-institutional survey of the Rett syndrome in Japan are reported. The survey was performed during 1985 and 1986. Eighty-nine cases were collected, of which 54 cases were confirmed to have the Rett syndrome. The ages of the patients ranged between 1 and 26 years. The clinical onsets occurred after 18 months of age in 28 cases, and before the age of one year in 26. No familial cases nor consanguinity was found. The incidence of perinatal abnormalities among the patients was not significantly higher than in other diseases in which no perinatal factors are involved.
