Self-reported hand and wrist arthritis and occupation: data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey-Occupational Health Supplement.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of population-based studies examining occupational hand-wrist arthritis. We examined relationships between hand-wrist arthritis, occupation, and biomechanical exposures in the U.S. National Health Interview Survey-Occupational Health Supplement. METHODS: A randomized, multi-stage, and cross-sectional national prevalence survey was carried out. RESULTS: Self-reported, medically attended hand-wrist arthritis was common among employed persons (period prevalence 1.58%; lifetime prevalence 3.58%). Highest prevalences occurred among technicians, machine operators, as

Hand-arm vibration syndrome and its prevalence in the present status of private forestry enterprises in Japan.

Currently there are no limitations on age of employment on private forestries in Japan. Hence, it was hypothesized that in these kind of enterprises, elderly chain saw operators, or those with long-term exposure, might be at higher risk of developing hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). We consequently investigated the prevalence of HAVS in 447 chain saw workers on private forestries in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, with particular reference to age and exposure period. Of this population, 43 (9.6%) had signs and symptoms of vibration-induced white finger (VWF), and among these workers the severity of

Use of metaphors when treating unexplained medical symptoms.

The words one chooses to describe personal pain mirror current usage, but may also hold echoes of an individual's lived experience. They may provide clues to the origin of physical symptoms that are medically hard to explain. The aim of this commentary is to propose, on the basis of the available literature, that verbal metaphors can prove effective in the psychotherapy of such conditions. I provide a case history of a 45 year old woman referred to psychiatry because of extreme 'burning' pain in her mouth and tongue. She had been to numerous doctors, had undergone a variety of tests, had tried

Burn out among the paediatric surgeons of Pakistan.

This study was to assess the prevalence of Burnout syndrome among physicians, medical students and other healthcare professionals as they are considered more prone to it. It has been reported to be as high as >85% among surgeons, due to the sensitive and exhaustive nature of their job. The objective was to determine the prevalence of burnout among Paediatric surgeons (PS) of Pakistan. For this cross-sectional study, all PS working in Pakistan were included. In order to assess burnout, Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was used. Burnout was found among 15% of the PS. In this group, it was also fo

Occupational mononeuropathies in industry.

Peripheral nerve injuries have the potential to cause significant disability and can be commonly associated with recreational and occupational activities. Acute nerve injuries are mainly related to violent trauma, while repeated mechanical trauma due to external forces or repetitive motions can produce chronic nerve compression injury. This chapter will present a narrative review of the existing evidence of the association between peripheral compressive nerve disorders and work-related risk factors. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common peripheral neuropathy in the general population

Nested case-control study of hand and wrist work-related musculoskeletal disorders in carpenters.

Unionized carpenters (n = 522) participated in a telephone interview regarding their jobs and musculoskeletal symptoms. From this group, a nested case-control study was conducted on 25 symptomatic carpenters who met a hand or wrist work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMD) case definition and on 35 asymptomatic carpenters who were of similar age, sex, height, and weight. The purpose of the study was to determine if questionnaire symptom data could be used to estimate the prevalence of hand/wrist WMDs. To test this hypothesis, a subset of subjects underwent physical examination and electrodia

Prader-Willi Syndrome: Genetics and Behavior.

Since its inception, the John F. Kennedy Center has attempted to overcome developmental problems, which create restrictive barriers to the participation of individuals with specific disabilities in our broader society. Some of Nicholas Hobbs's earliest efforts involved developing strategies for preventing children's emotional and behavior problems, which interfered with their later full participation in society. Other investigators in the Kennedy Center explored ways of reducing dysfunctional repetitive movement problems and self-injury commonly associated with autism and severe mental retarda

Autonomic dysfunction presenting as postural tachycardia syndrome following traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysregulation (also called diencephalic epilepsy) has been reported following traumatic brain injuries (TBI). However, until now, postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) has not been reported as a long-term complication in patients who have suffered a TBI. We report on a series of patients who developed POTS after suffering TBI. METHODS: Eight patients who were referred to our center had suffered TBI and developed features of orthostatic intolerance following head trauma. The patients' neurological, neurosurgical and autonomic data (charts and/or physician letters) were the

Does Allergy Break Bones? Osteoporosis and Its Connection to Allergy.

: Osteoporosis and allergic diseases are important causes of morbidity, and traditionally their coexistence has been attributed to causality, to independent processes, and they were considered unrelated. However, the increasing knowledge in the field of osteoimmunology and an increasing number of epidemiological and biological studies have provided support to a correlation between bone and allergy that share pathways, cells, cytokines and mediators. If the link between allergic pathology and bone alterations appears more subtle, there are conditions such as mastocytosis and hypereosinophilic o

Pre-surgery disability compensation predicts long-term disability among workers with carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: We sought to identify early risk factors for work disability compensation prior to and after carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) surgery, and to determine whether pre-surgery disability compensation is associated with long-term disability. METHODS: Washington State workers' compensation administrative data and data from interviews with workers 18 days (median) after submitting new workers' compensation claims for CTS were examined. Baseline risk factors for pre-surgery disability compensation and for long-term disability (>365 days of work disability compensation prior to 2 years after c

Use of botulinum toxin type A on orthopedics: a case report.

Botulinum toxin type A is effective in treating neurologic entities with increased muscle tone. Few reports show the benefits of this treatment for orthopedic conditions. We present the case of a 54-year-old man who manifested bilateral pectoralis major stiffness and bilateral shoulder pain; he had a score of 6 on a visual analog scale (VAS). Complex regional pain syndrome (type I) after cardiac surgery, which had already been resolved, was significant in the patient's clinical background. On examination, neither increases in muscle tone nor signs of tendinous or joint pathology was found. How

Costs and gains of complex procedures to rehabilitate end stage ocular surface disease.

BACKGROUND: The management of patients with end stage ocular surface disease sometimes requires extensive surgical treatment that can only be provided by specialised ophthalmology. The authors discuss the costs and gains of such complex techniques based on a case of bilateral corneal blindness secondary to Stevens-Johnson syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: Despite multiple lid surgery for trichiasis and repeated corneal grafting for perforations a white female patient became bilaterally blind at the age of 29 years. She also suffered from disabling discomfort in the right dry eye. At the age of 5

[Metaanalysis for the evaluation of risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) Part II. Occupational risk factors].

AIM: The expert committee of the German Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs suggested carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) as an "occupational disease". This systematic literature review and metaanalysis was aimed at identifying associated and risk factors for CTS. Part II addresses the occupational factors of CTS. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic literature review was performed by examining papers in PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE and Web of Science databases that were published on or before February 15th, 2011. A total of 87 studies (27 longitudinal and 60 cross-sectional) were included in this metaa

Infertility currently affects nearly one in six couples, representing more than 3.3 million people in France. Infertility now occurs in an unprecedented demographic context, marked by a rapid decline in fertility: the total fertility rate has fallen from 1.87 children per woman in 2019 to 1.56 in 2025, while the annual number of births has reached its lowest level since the post–Second World War period, resulting in a natural population decrease. This trend gives infertility major strategic significance for public health and social cohesion. Far from being a purely individua

Recurrent Catatonia due to Episodic Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Catatonia is regarded as a diverse type of motor dysregulation syndrome that includes mutism, immobility, catalepsy, negativism, stereotypies, and echo phenomena. Catatonia is known to coexist with a wide range of physical and mental health conditions, including mood disorders, schizophrenia, autoimmune disorders, and metabolic abnormalities. Albeit, the association between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and catatonia is underreported, and mechanisms are not well elucidated. Study. In this study, we present a case of a 36-year-old woman who developed episodes of catatonia duri
