We studied 131 temporomandibular joints (TMJs) in 73 patients (56 women, 17 men) with internal derangement using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in addition to clinical examinations. The type of TMJ sounds correlated significantly with the degree of disc displacement. We present the results of primary surgical treatment of war injuries of major joints in 339 patients, wounded in the territory of the former Yugoslavia in the period June 1991-October 1995. In the operative therapy of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, a controversial discussion exists about the sense of a simultaneous stabilization of both epiphyseal plates and about the correct time of removing the implants. We show the epikrisis of two patients to demonstrate our therapy regimen: in the first case the implants were removed too early. The consequence was a further slipping of the femoral epiphysis consecutive on both sides and the necessity of further surgery. A new triple osteotomy, polygonal pelvic osteotomy (PPO), is described for use in dysplastic hips. The hip joint must be congruous with a centre-edge (CE) angle between +20 degrees and -10 degrees. The central joints of 19 patients identified as suffering from polymyalgia rheumatica were examined using ultrasonography (US). At US 13 patients (68%) were found to have an effusion in the hip and/or glenohumeral joints. Synovial fluid analyses were conducted on the central joints of four patients. These findings suggest that at least one patient group with the syndrome of PMR could better be designated as having axial arthritis and this synovitis might play an important role in the understanding of their symptoms.
