Xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis clinically mimicking a malignancy: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranulomatous tissue reaction is a well-documented process that is most common in kidney. There are other uncommon sites being documented as case reports in the literature. We would like to describe the clinicopathologic findings in a case of xanthogranulomatous sialadenitis that involved the parotid gland, which was clinically thought to be a tumoral mass, and compare it with the 4 previously reported cases. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old man presented with a left parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration biopsy was consistent with Warthin's tumor. The mass lesion was excised. DISC

Microcystic urothelial cell carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation arising in renal pelvis. Report of a case.

Microcystic urothelial cell carcinoma is a rare variant of urothelial cell carcinoma which occurs in the bladder and, rarely, in the renal pelvis. Neuroendocrine differentiation is uncommon in pure urothelial carcinoma and is more frequently found in neoplasms with glandular differentiation. We report a case of microcystic urothelial cell carcinoma arising in renal pelvis and showing focal neuroendocrine differentiation. A 55-year-old man with a history of non-small cell cancer of the lung presented with abdominal pain and hematuria. Imaging studies and gross examination revealed a partially c

Ultrastructural analysis of the liver with portal vein agenesis: a case report.

Congenital absence of portal vein (CAPV) is a rare vascular malformation: all 16 cases up to now reported are associated with other congenital anomalies and with benign or malignant hepatic neoplasms. Our report concerns a girl with a complex malformative syndrome consisting of CAPV, nodular tumor-like hyperplasia of the liver, and multicystic kidney dysplasia. CAPV was diagnosed by angiography, showing the splenic vein and superior mesenteric vein joined to form a "common trunk" directly entering the inferior vena cava above the liver. The liver maintained the normal lobular architecture, but

Toxicity and tumorigenicity of purpurin, a natural hydroxanthraquinone in rats: induction of bladder neoplasms.

Chronic toxicity and tumorigenicity of purpurin, a natural hydroxyanthraquinone, was examined in two groups of male F344 rats. One group was given a basal diet mixed with purpurin at a concentration of 1% throughout the experiment (520 days). Another group was kept on the basal diet without purpurin during the experiment. Almost all animals given purpurin developed conspicuous changes of kidney resembling 'progressive chronic nephropathies', the severity and frequency of which were much stronger than in controls. In rats with purpurin treatment, marked hyperplasia of pelvic epithelium was freq

Uterine collision tumor (PEComa and endometrioid carcinoma) in a tuberous sclerosis patient: a case report.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors are very rare mesenchymal neoplasms arising in various locations, such as the female genital tract, kidney, lung, prostate, bladder, pancreas, soft tissues, and bone. They possess a unique immunophenotype, co-expressing myogenic and melanocytic markers; molecular findings include mutations of tuberous sclerosis complex and translocations of transcription factor E3, a member of the microphthalmia transcription factor gene family. We herewith report a uterine collision tumor consisting of a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor and a moderately differentiated e

A Rare Case of Extramedullary Plasmacytoma Presenting as Large Abdominal Mass.

A 79-year-old female with a past medical history of multiple myeloma, diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease presented to the hospital with generalized weakness. The patient was found to have a firm abdominal wall mass with no underlying skin changes or drainage on physical examination. Computerized tomography of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast revealed a large mass-like structure in the anterior abdominal wall in the subcutaneous region extending into the abdomen through the mesentery with juxtaposition and partial involvement of the left hepatic lobe and distal stomach. [Splenic metastases. Apropos of 4 cases].

The authors report about 4 cases of splenic metastases in patients with the following neoplasms: urothelial carcinoma of the left kidney, adenocarcinoma of the uterine body, adenocarcinoma of the left flexure of the colon, adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid loop. On large autopsy series, metastases to the spleen are not rare (7% in average), and rank 10th among the 44 metastatic sites described in the literature. Cancers of the breast, lung, skin (melanoma), ovaries and stomach (cardia) make up more than 60% of the primary tumors. The diagnosis is most often accidental (surveillance of operated pat

The Rare Trio: Concomitant Bone Marrow Involvement by Smoldering Myeloma and Systemic Mastocytosis with an Associated Hematologic Neoplasm and ALECT-2 Renal Amyloidosis - A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal disorder characterized by abnormal accumulation of mast cells in various tissues and is categorized into distinct subtypes per the World Health Organization (WHO) 2022 classification. When SM is associated with another hematologic neoplasm, typically of myeloid lineage, it is classified as systemic mastocytosis with an associated hematologic neoplasm (SM-AHN). Coexistence with plasma cell dyscrasias is rare, with fewer than 15 published cases involving either smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) or multiple myeloma (MM). ALECT-2 amyloidosis, a

Mucin-poor and aggressive mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma of the kidney: Two case reports.

Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma (MTSCC) is a relatively rare renal epithelial neoplasm. Although MTSCC is considered to be a low-grade and indolent neoplasm, aggressive cases have been recently reported. The present study discussed two additional cases of high-grade MTSCC causing multiple distant metastases with a fatal course. In case 1, a 71-year-old patient presented with hematuria and pyuria. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the right kidney revealed a mass lesion, for which partial nephrectomy was performed. However, a follow-up CT imaging revealed distant metastases in the li

Spectrum of nontumoral renal pathologies in tumor nephrectomies: nontumoral renal parenchyma changes.

Non-neoplastic changes are not rarely seen in renal parenchyma of nephrectomy specimens removed for primary renal neoplasms. These changes often involve both kidneys, thus causing impairment of renal function, reducing patient's quality of life and sometimes threatening it. Renal tissue accompanying the tumor provides an opportunity in order to evaluate these changes. However, the clinician should make available clinical and laboratory findings involving renal functions of the patient to the pathologist. It is also important that the pathologist must have appropriate knowledge and experience i

Recent Innovations in Renal Vascular Imaging.

Noninvasive imaging of the vascular renal system is a common request in diagnostic radiology. Typical indications include suspected renovascular hypertension, vasculitis, neoplasm, vascular malformation, and structural diseases of the kidney. Profound knowledge of the renal anatomy, including vascular supply and variants, is mandatory for radiologists and allows for optimized protocolling and interpretation of imaging studies. Besides renal ultrasound, computed tomography and MR imaging are commonly requested cross-sectional studies for renal and renal vascular imaging. This article discusses

Polypoid Endometriosis Presenting as a Renal Cortical Tumor.

A 41-year-old female patient presented with left-sided flank pain and gross hematuria temporally unrelated to her menstrual cycle. Abdominal computed tomography scan showed a large left-sided solid, enhancing kidney mass radiographically consistent with renal cell carcinoma. Following surgical resection, histopathological examination revealed polypoid endometriosis. Polypoid endometriosis is rare and mimics a neoplasm clinically, radiographically, and on gross examination. Patients with polypoid endometriosis often present with symptoms related to mass effect rather than classic endometriosis

Urinary tract blastomycosis diagnosed by urine cytology.

Urinary tract blastomycosis is an uncommon manifestation of disseminated Blastomyces infection. Here, we report a 50-year-old male with common variable immunodeficiency who presented with urinary symptoms and a renal mass concerning for a kidney neoplasm. Urine cytology revealed typical broad-based budding yeasts with thick-walled refractile capsules, leading to diagnosis of urinary tract blastomycosis. In this case, urine cultures were negative, and urine cytology was the main method of diagnosis of blastomycosis. Thus, urine cytology represents a rapid and reliable method of diagnosing blast

[Metastatic choriocarcinoma in 26-year-old woman--case report].

Gestational trophoblastic tumors are a group of diseases spanning from a benign hydatidiform mole, through an invasive mole to a highly malignant form of choriocarcinoma. Choriocarcinoma is a rare but the most malignant and aggressive neoplasm of all the gestational trophoblastic diseases. It grows rapidly and metastasizes into the lungs, liver, and, less frequently, to the brain. The author presents a case of a 26-year-old woman who was, based on previous investigations, referred for a CT examination for suspected brain tumour. On the basis of medical history provided by the patient's husband

Urinary tract infection and risk of bladder cancer.

In an epidemiologic study of 2982 bladder carcinoma patients and 5782 population controls from 10 geographic areas of the United States, the role of urinary tract infection and inflammation in the etiology of this neoplasm was evaluated. A history of urinary tract infection significantly elevated the risk of bladder cancer, particularly in individuals who reported three or more infections (relative risk (RR) = 2.0). Significantly increased bladder cancer risk was also found for bladder stones (RR = 1.8), while kidney stones showed no relation. A history of three or more urinary tract infection

Methylation scores for smoking, alcohol consumption and body mass index and risk of seven types of cancer.

Methylation marks of exposure to health risk factors may be useful markers of cancer risk as they might better capture current and past exposures than questionnaires, and reflect different individual responses to exposure. We used data from seven case-control studies nested within the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study of blood DNA methylation and risk of colorectal, gastric, kidney, lung, prostate and urothelial cancer, and B-cell lymphoma (N cases = 3123). Methylation scores (MS) for smoking, body mass index (BMI), and alcohol consumption were calculated based on published data as weighted

Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease-associated Renal Cell Carcinoma (ACKD-RCC) Harbor Recurrent Mutations in KMT2C and TSC2 Genes.

Individuals with acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) in the setting of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have a high risk of developing renal cell carcinoma (RCC). ACKD-RCC is considered a distinct renal neoplasm in the International Society of Urologic Pathologists (ISUP)-World Health Organization (WHO) classification of kidney tumors which may behave aggressively. Since its original description, there have been multiple case reports and series published; however, the pathogenesis of this neoplasm is uncertain and there is limited data on the genetic aberrations of this tumor. Herein, we prese

Clear cell sarcoma of kidney in an adolescent and in young adults: a report of four cases with ultrastructural, immunohistochemical, and DNA flow cytometric analysis.

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney is a distinct, highly malignant pediatric neoplasm. Its occurrence in adults is extremely rare and the subject of isolated case reports. We present a series of four cases (three males and one female) identified in an adolescent and in young adults (16, 18, 20, and 25 years) with flank mass (three cases), hematuria (two cases), flank pain (two cases), and hypertension (one case). Three patients had stage III disease and one had stage I disease (National Wilms' Tumor Study staging system). All tumors had predominantly or exclusively the classic histology of a mon

Metastasizing mixed tumor of salivary glands. A clinicopathologic and flow cytometric analysis.

Among salivary gland neoplasms are a group of rare tumors that are histologically identical to benign mixed tumors that inexplicably metastasize; they have been called metastasizing mixed tumor (MZMT) of salivary glands. We report the clinicopathologic features and flow cytometric findings for 11 cases of MZMT. At the time of discovery of metastatic disease, the patients, six women and five men, ranged in age from 20 to 83 years. Primary sites of involvement included the parotid gland (eight cases), submandibular gland (two cases), and the nasal septum (one case). With one exception, all the p

Marked Anaplasia Obscuring the Diagnosis of Clear Cell Sarcoma of the Kidney in Pretreatment Needle Biopsy.

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney is an uncommon pediatric renal malignancy with metastatic potential and marked morphologic heterogeneity. The anaplastic variant is rare and may mimic other high-grade pediatric renal tumors, resulting in diagnostic challenges in limited pretreatment biopsy specimens. A 3-year-old girl presented with progressive abdominal distension. Imaging showed a 15-cm right retroperitoneal mass with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava and no distant metastasis. Pretreatment core needle biopsy showed a highly pleomorphic malignant neoplasm with necrosis and fibrous-to-
