Unraveling Dysgeusia in SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Clinical and Laboratory Insights from Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients in Romania.

Introduction: Dysgeusia has been regarded as a clinical feature associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection since the onset of the pandemic. The initial circulating variants were linked to the presence of dysgeusia; however, with the emergence of the Omicron variant, the incidence of dysgeusia has decreased. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence and characteristics of patients with dysgeusia from the onset of the pandemic to the Omicron variant. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from March 2020 to December 2021, among adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the main infec

Congenital Zika virus infection in laboratory animals: a comparative review highlights translational studies on the maternal-foetal interface.

The 2015-16 Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic has posed unprecedented concern for maternal-infant health, mainly due to the substantial risk of microcephaly and other neurological birth abnormalities associated with congenital ZIKV syndrome (CZS). As licenced vaccines and effective antivirals are still unavailable, attention has been focused on post-delivery in vitro or translational in vivo studies to understand the impact of maternal ZIKV infection on placentation and neurodevelopmental consequences for the foetus. Here, we review clinical and translational studies highlighting ZIKV-induced materna

Validation and interpretation of machine-learning models for rapid identification of active tuberculosis infection using routine laboratory indicators.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of active Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection relies on clinical symptoms, imaging, and molecular testing, but these methods are often costly and slow. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a rapid and accessible diagnostic approach that can support early detection and reduce ongoing tuberculosis transmission. METHODS: A discovery cohort of 3,829 individuals and an external validation cohort of 405 individuals were included. Six supervised machine learning models were trained using routine laboratory data, and model interpretability was assessed with SHapley

Diagnostic Model of COVID-19 Infection Based on the Combination of Clinical Symptoms, Chest Radiography and Laboratory Test.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 is an infection caused by SARS-COV 2.For screening the patient, Rapid antigen for COVID-19 is used with a high diagnostic value. However, there are still some cases of false-negative even with clinical symptoms suggesting COVID-19. Undetected COVID-19 patients certainly will increase  transmission. A simple and practical diagnostic model, using determining factors, is required to guide physicians through a quicker decision making process, especially when deciding the need for the isolation rooms for patients with COVID-like symptoms. METHODS: This study is a cross-section

Staggered enforcement of infection control and prevention measures following four consecutive potential laboratory exposures to imported Brucella melitensis.

From 2015 until 2020, Brucella melitensis was isolated four times in our microbiology laboratory. All patients had travelled in endemic-areas. Immediately after the first occurrence, all laboratory staff were risk-stratified and preventive and protective measures were applied according to CDC guidelines. Nineteen workers were exposed and needed chemoprophylaxis and follow-up. At each subsequent occurrence, risk analysis was performed, and additional measures were implemented accordingly, leading to a progressive reduction of exposed staff members to none the fourth time. We describe here the a

[Laboratory diagnosis of Treponema pallidum infection in patients with early syphilis and neurosyphilis through a PCR-based test].

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. The diagnosis is based mainly in clinical presentation and non-specific assays. PCR-based diagnosis has been suggested as an attractive alternative method. The aim of this study was the validation of a PCR-based test for the diagnosis of early syphilis (ES) and neurosyphilis (NS). Clinical samples of mucocutaneous lesions and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients previously diagnosed for ES and NS respectively using an enlarged gold standard, were tested by PCR. The reaction was done using primers targeting th

Burden and diagnostic capacity of intestinal parasitic infections in Argentina: Analysis of national surveillance and laboratory data.

Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) remain an important public health concern in many low- and middle-income countries. In Argentina, these infections persist in rural and peri-urban areas, with marked regional and age-related disparities. This study describes the national epidemiological situation since IPIs were included among notifiable diseases, and assesses diagnostic capacity based on routine surveillance and laboratory network data. We conducted an analysis of aggregated records from the National Health Surveillance System (SNVS 2.0) for epidemiological weeks (EW) 1-2023 to 11-2025,
