Among 49 male workers, mean age 30 years, who had been working in conditions of extreme noise and vibration for between 6 months and 10 years vestibular disturbances could be shown (in the form of spontaneous nystagmus, lowered caloric excitability, or pathology in rotatory tests) in as high as 44.9%. The lesions were believed to have arisen in the peripheral vestibular organ as a consequence of the low frequency vibration.

Recent reports have suggested that particulate matter identified within the membranous portion of the posterior semicircular canal is responsible for the development of positional vertigo. Thirty ears in 15 patients were examined by plain film radiography and by panoramic zonography with two tracks: A cylindrical concave image layer with 26 mm. radius and a paired sagittal image layer, at 51 mm. distance from midline. The films were interpreted according to the visibility of 23 different anatomic details. On panoramic films the visualization was better in 14 details, equal in 6 and worse in 3 compared to the plain films. The result suggests that panoramic techniques can replace conventional radiography of the ear.

Hearing loss represents a common adverse effect following platinum-based chemotherapy regimens. After direct inoculation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) into the scala tympani of the guinea pig, the tectorial membrane showed various morphological changes: atrophy, roll-up and dot formation. Acoustic tumor surgery provided an ideal model in which to study possible contralateral hearing loss following a destructive surgical procedure on the inner ear.
