PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe the novel surgical technique using laser photocoagulation for the management of Candida chorioretinal lesions that are refractory to medical therapy.
METHODS: This report presents the use of laser photocoagulation applied to a Candida chorioretinal lesion that was refractory to extensive systemic and intravitreal antifungal medications. The presenting lesion was in an immunosuppressed patient. Argon laser photocoagulation was applied onto and surrounding the Candida chorioretinal lesion.
RESULTS: After laser photocoagulation, the Candida ch

PURPOSE: Fetoscopic laser photocoagulation is a minimally invasive procedure to treat twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome during pregnancy by stopping irregular blood flow in the placenta. Building an image mosaic of the placenta and its network of vessels could assist surgeons to navigate in the challenging fetoscopic environment during the procedure.
METHODOLOGY: We propose a fetoscopic mosaicking approach by combining deep learning-based optical flow with robust estimation for filtering inconsistent motions that occurs due to floating particles and specularities. While the current state of t

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the acute histological effects of MicroPulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MPCPC) using the MicroPulse P3 Device and continuous wave transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (CWCPC) on the ciliary body and adjacent structures in human cadaver eyes.
METHODS: Quadrants of 6 human cadaver eyes from 3 different donors were subjected to traditional CWCPC, slow burn CWCPC, MPCPC, or no treatment (internal control). Sutures were used to differentiate different treatment areas on each eye. Differential inking was applied after treatments to aid in m

Transscleral cyclophotocoagulation is not usually considered as the first line surgical therapy for glaucoma. However, it still remains an important tool for lowering intraocular pressure in certain patients. It is quick and easy to perform and acts through an alternative physiological approach compared to filtration surgery. As the ciliary body is not directly visible, an empirical distance from the limbus is often used for placement of the laser probe; however, the anatomical structures can be highly variable. Diaphanoscopy provides a very simple and effective way to visualize the ciliary bo

AIM: To report the experience of the intrauterine treatment of monochorionic biamnotic (MC/BA) twin pregnancies complicated with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) applying laser ablation of the placental vascular anastomoses (LAPVA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: During 18 months period 35 MC/BA twin pregnancies were treated. TTTS was diagnosed based on the discrepancies in amniotic fluid and bladder size between both twins. Severity of TTTS was classified according to the hemodynamic changes in both twins. LAPVA was performed between 16-26 weeks of gestation using a rigid straight fetoscope a

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a significant cause of childhood blindness. The criteria for laser therapy have been revised from threshold ROP to include the earlier stage of high-risk prethreshold ROP. Laser photocoagulation is an established technique for the treatment of ROP. However, the detailed procedure and techniques for laser photocoagulation have not yet been published. Adequate and appropriate laser photocoagulation for ROP is different from the application of lasers in adult retinal vascular diseases, and many ophthalmologists need to be trained in this technique if the outrea

BACKGROUND: Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a monopolar, noncontact, thermal procedure that is widely used in therapeutic endoscopy. Systematic investigations of the tissue damage ex vivo and in vivo with the new, second-generation APC modes are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the tissue effects of the pulsed effect 2 and precise APC modes.
DESIGN AND SETTING: Ex vivo and in vivo animal model.
SUBJECTS: This study involved 3 explanted porcine esophagi and 8 pigs under general anesthesia.
INTERVENTION: APC application on 3 explanted esophagi and during esophagoscop

Numerous techniques have evolved in facial plastic surgery to treat rosacea and solar lentigines. The treatment regimens range from avoidance of causative factors to the use of topical agents or other modalities that target the superficial layers of the skin. Of the modalities that target the epidermis, lasers offer the physician and patient the ability to target specific chromophores in the skin. Advances in laser technology led to the implementation of targeting certain characteristic pigments of abnormal areas with minimal damage to surrounding normal tissue. Rosacea and solar lentigines ha

The objective of the work was to compare the effectiveness of transscleral laser photocoagulation and cryocoagulation of the retina in the treatment of retinopathy of premature infants (ROP). During the period from March 1999 to April 2001 at the Ophthalmological Clinic for children and adults in the Motol Faculty Hospital 80 eyes of 40 children with the borderline stage of ROP were treated. In 40 eyes cryocoagulation was performed, in 40 transcleral photocoagulation of the retina. The mean gestation age of the infants on delivery was 28.7 weeks, the postconception age at the time of operation

Laser photocoagulation was performed around a detached retina in 4 patients who developed localized retinal detachment after successful scleral buckling. The range of retinal redetachment in all 4 patients was no larger than that of the initial retinal detachment and did not go over the vascular arcade. No evidence of vitreous traction or proliferative vitreoretinopathy was observed in these cases. Laser photocoagulation was performed in 3 lines of gray-white burn around the detached retina. Retinal attachment occurred between 4 and 14 days of laser treatment in all cases. No procedure related

PATIENT: A 60-year-old female patient presented with recurrent anterior, necrotizing scleritis with inflammation and a newly developed secondary glaucoma in the right eye. Anterior uveitis occurred some years before. Severe scleral thinning was circumferentially present and focal scleral ectasia was found. Physical examination revealed no systemic association of scleritis. Immunosuppressive therapy with metotrexate was initiated and control of scleritis achieved. Intraocular pressure elevation persisted and was refractory to glaucoma medication. Diurnal pressure curve showed IOP-values of 40 m

Ciliodestructive procedures are commonly performed by the transscleral approach because ciliary processes are seldom visible. Thus the ablative energy is directed toward an "invisible" target whose position can only be estimated on the basis of experimental data. Ultrasound biomicroscopy has been recently introduced in ophthalmologic practice. This high-frequency ultrasound B-scan method gives real-time images of the subsurface structures of the anterior portion of the living eye at microscopic resolution. Ultrasound biomicroscopy perfectly visualizes the ciliary body and its surrounding struc

PURPOSE: Evaluation of ocular tissue reactions to 670-nm diode laser.
METHODS: Twelve eyes of 12 pigmented rabbits were used. Transscleral contact laser delivery of a new 670-nm diode laser was used to produce retinal laser lesions in four rabbits; endolaser application of this laser produced photocoagulation of the retina in another four rabbits; and ciliary body lesions were produced by transscleral application of this laser in a third group of four rabbits. The rabbits were killed either 2 days or 1, 3, or 6 weeks later; lesions were evaluated by gross examination and histology.

Diabetic retinopathy progresses through three distinct stages. A rational approach to management is based on an understanding of the pathophysiology of each stage. Based on the results of national multicentered clinical trials of laser photocoagulation and other treatments, advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment can now make a dramatic impact on blindness in the diabetic population: Panretinal laser photocoagulation treatment can reduce the risk of vision loss from high-risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy by at least 50%. Laser photocoagulation treatment of clinica
