Timing of dislocated nuclear fragment management after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To determine the timing of vitrectomy in patients with dislocated nuclear fragments after phacoemulsification and to correlate timing with visual outcomes. SETTING: University Eye Clinic of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the records of 26 patients who had phacoemulsification at the University Eye Clinic of Ioannina over a 5-year period. The mean age of the 13 men and 13 women was 66.9 years (range 59 to 80 years). All patients had nucleus or nuclear fragment dislocation into the vitreous cavity during phacoemulsification and had vitrectomy an

Fly larva adherent to corneal endothelium.

Anterior ophthalmomyiasis is a rare condition in which a fly larva invades the globe, causing iridocyclitis and sometimes subluxation of the lens. Humans are accidental hosts in whom such larvae, after entering the eye, undergo little development. We report a case in which the first larval stage of a rodent or rabbit botfly, Cuterebra sp., invaded the anterior chamber, produced a transient iridocyclitis, and adhered to the posterior cornea where it remained as a dead, slightly atrophic body. Identification of the organism was made by slit-lamp and specular photomicrographs. Tapering doses of t

Ocular findings in several metabolic diseases.

Changes in ocular findings have been noted in association with several metabolic diseases. In homocystinuria the crystalline lens in the majority of cases is subluxated inferiorly, while in Marfan's syndrome the dislocation was upward. In cystinosis, slit-lamp examination reveals numerous gold crystal-like cystine deposits in both the cornea and bulbar conjunctiva. Patients with galactosemia have cataracts of the "oil drop" type, which usually can be seen with an ophthalmoscope even though the opacity is not dense. Eight patients with Lowe's syndrome who were observed had cataracts, and four o

Angle Closure Glaucoma in Retinitis Pigmentosa.

BACKGROUND: Angle closure glaucoma (ACG) whether primary or secondary lens induced has rare occurrence in cases with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). METHOD: Five patients with history of diminished vision, ocular pain, and nyctalopia were clinically evaluated. Four patients had unilateral presentations of circumciliary congestion, corneal edema, and high intraocular pressure (IOP), while one had bilateral presentation, respectively. Anterior chambers were shallow; fundoscopy revealed the features of RP and gonioscopy affirmed closed angles in all the cases. The management strategies were individua

Bilateral anterior lens luxation with secondary glaucoma strongly associated with self-application of a percussion massage gun to closed eyelids: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Percussion massage guns (PMGs) have gained widespread popularity for muscle recovery; however, standardized safety guidelines for application to anatomically vulnerable regions are lacking. Previously reported PMG-associated ocular injuries have been limited to unilateral or mild bilateral involvement. We report the first documented case of bilateral anterior lens luxation with secondary glaucoma strongly associated with self-application of a PMG to closed eyelids. CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old Chinese male with type 2 diabetes mellitus and bilateral meibomian gland dysfunction

Circular RNAs profiling in the cystathionine-β-synthase mutant mouse reveals novel gene targets for hyperhomocysteinemia induced ocular disorders.

Cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) gene encodes L-serine hydrolyase which catalyzes β-reaction to condense serine with homocysteine (Hcy) by pyridoxal-5'-phosphate helps to form cystathionine which in turn is converted to cysteine. CBS resides at the intersection of transmethylation, transsulfuration, and remethylation pathways, thus lack of CBS fundamentally blocks Hcy degradation; an essential step in glutathione synthesis. Redox homeostasis, free-radical detoxification and one-carbon metabolism (Methionine-Hcy-Folate cycle) require CBS and its deficiency leads to hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) cau

Hemorrhagic retinal cysts revealing astrocytic glial hyperplasia 20 years after vitrectomy for post-traumatic retinal detachment.

PurposePre-retinal cysts are rare and poorly characterized clinical entities. Unlike intraretinal cysts commonly associated with macular diseases, pre-retinal cysts have distinct etiologies and require specific diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Proper differentiation and comprehension of glial retinal homeostasis are key to appropriate management.Case presentationWe report the case of a 65-year-old man with a history of post-traumatic retinal detachment treated surgically, and a subluxated intraocular lens (IOL) replaced with an iris-clipped lens for UGH syndrome. The patient experienced
