Overcoming technological barriers in microfluidics: Leakage testing.

The miniaturization of laboratory procedures for Lab-on-Chip (LoC) devices and translation to various platforms such as single cell analysis or Organ-on-Chip (OoC) systems are revolutionizing the life sciences and biomedical fields. As a result, microfluidics is becoming a viable technology for improving the quality and sensitivity of critical processes. Yet, standard test methods have not yet been established to validate basic manufacturing steps, performance, and safety of microfluidic devices. The successful development and widespread use of microfluidic technologies are greatly dependent o

Childhood and Adolescent Obesity Prevention: From Evidence to Implementation in Complex Systems.

Childhood and adolescent obesity has emerged as one of the most pressing public health challenges worldwide. The persistence of excess weight from early life into adulthood together with its associated health consequences underscores the importance of effective prevention strategies. However, obesity in early life is driven by complex interactions between biological susceptibility, lifestyle behaviours, social determinants, and obesogenic environments, making prevention particularly challenging. This review synthesises current evidence on childhood obesity prevention, critically examines the ef

Patients' experiences of very early supported discharge after stroke: safety, emotional support and feelings of control in everyday life.

OBJECTIVE: Early supported discharge (ESD) aims to enable the transition of care from specialised stroke units to patients' homes. Even though ESD is well-researched, little is known about the experiences faced by persons with stroke in very early supported discharge (VESD). The aim of this study was to understand these experiences when participating in a VESD rehabilitation program. METHODS: Qualitative individual and semi-structured interviews were held (at 3 months post-discharge) with stroke survivors discharged home at a very early stage and participating in a VESD programme. A thematic

"I have to start learning how to live with becoming sick": A scoping review of the lived experiences of people with Huntington's disease.

Person-centered care (PCC) is recognized as a key component of the delivery of quality healthcare and a model for healthcare systems worldwide. The experience of illness through a person's perspective is one domain defining PCC contributing to a growing interest in examining the lived experiences of illness. This scoping review sought to examine what is known from the existing literature about the lived experiences of persons gene-positive for or living with Huntington's disease (HD) as described in their own voices and to outline prominent psychosocial themes of those experiences. Five databa

The Evolution of End-of-Life Care: Ethical Implications for Case Management.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES: This article: PRIMARY PRACTICE SETTINGS(S): : Applicable to all health care sectors where case management is practiced. FINDINGS/CONCLUSION: Few topics are more intimate and multifaceted for case managers than engaging with today's culturally diverse patient populations around end-of-life processes. The already prominent focus of this issue has been further elevated by a series of events to receive public attention. These include the Institute of Medicine's 2014 report-Dying in America: Improving Quality and Honoring Individual Preferences Near the End of Life, rising

Mobilising evidence, data, and resources to achieve global maternal and child undernutrition targets and the Sustainable Development Goals: an agenda for action.

As the world counts down to the 2025 World Health Assembly nutrition targets and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, millions of women, children, and adolescents worldwide remain undernourished (underweight, stunted, and deficient in micronutrients), despite evidence on effective interventions and increasing political commitment to, and financial investment in, nutrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled health systems, exacerbated household food insecurity, and reversed economic growth, which together could set back improvements in undernutrition across low-income and middle-income coun

Management during the first 72 h of age of the periviable infant: an evidence-based review.

After NICU admission the extremely immature newborn (EIN) requires evaluation and support of each organ system, and the integration of all those supports in a comprehensive plan of care. In this review, I attempt to analyze the evidence for treatment options after the initial transition, during the first 3 days of life, which have been shown to improve survival or short- or long-term morbidity. This review revealed several things: there is little available evidence from studies that have included significant numbers of EINs; interventions affecting different organ systems need to be co-ordinat

Restless legs syndrome: a review of clinical and pathophysiologic features.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), although long ignored and still much underdiagnosed, disrupts the life and sleep considerably of those who have it. Recent clinical and basic research provides for better definition and pathophysiologic understanding of the disorder. The body of knowledge about this disorder has been expanding rapidly during the past decade and it has altered our concepts of this disorder. This review of RLS covers history, diagnosis, morbidity of sleep disturbance, relation to periodic limb movements in both sleep and waking, secondary causes, severity assessment methods, phenoty

Augmentative communication--an approach for the severely physically handicapped person without oral speech.

Many individuals are unable to communicate, due to severe neuromuscular impairments. In the past they were assessed by the speech pathologist for their ability to produce oral speech. When the oral musculature and respiratory system were found to be too weak to support sustained phonation for speech, they did not receive further treatment. This severe dysarthria resulted in unintelligible or no useful speech. Both children and adults experienced the extreme frustration of no human communication despite, in many cases, their intact intellectual functioning. Augmentative communication offers sup

Living with invisible illness: social support experiences of individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus.

PURPOSE: Because symptoms are not immediately visible to others, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is often considered an invisible illness. This invisibility can reduce the social support received from network members and adversely affect the quality of life. In the light of this, social support from formal support groups and from medical professionals can be particularly important; however, literature examining support from these sources is scarce. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and impact of social support from medical professionals and from support groups for individu

Hematological cancer patients' social support, coping strategies, anxiety, depression and posttraumatic growth: a structural equation model.

ObjectivePosttraumatic growth (PTG), defined as positive psychological changes following traumatic events, has been observed in some hematological cancer patients during their disease course. These changes, encompassing shifts in life perspective, interpersonal relationships, and self-perception, are critical for psychological recovery. However, the interplay of social support, coping strategies, anxiety, and depression in shaping PTG remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore these associations in hematological cancer patients using a hypothetical model.MethodsFrom Augus

Automated Insulin Delivery Systems for Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes: Strategies for Optimal Performance.

BACKGROUND: The use of automated insulin delivery (AID) devices is now widespread in the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D), being used for younger and older children, adolescents, and adults. The integration of insulin pumps with continuous glucose monitors and smart management software in AID systems has significantly improved glycemic management compared to the separate application of each diabetes technology. The efficacy of AID systems has been demonstrated in randomized controlled trials (RCTs), but it is their application in real-world studies that fully demonstrates their impact for p

At home until the end? A qualitative study of experiences of in-home aged care programs in the context of caring for older adults with a life-limiting illness.

BACKGROUND: A growing proportion of older adults are living longer and dying with life-limiting illnesses. While the majority express a preference for end-of-life care at home, there is often a disparity between this preference and settings in which care and death continue to occur. Alongside other determinants, the nature of available care at home at the end of life shapes the realisation of preferences. Yet there is limited understanding of the experience and effectiveness of programs of in-home aged care in supporting end-of-life care at home. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the exp

Kinetic modelling of Chlorella spp. wastewater treatment and resource recovery in the food industry.

Effluents generated in the food and beverage industry typically contain elevated concentrations of organic carbon sources and inorganic nutrients, representing a significant environmental burden as global food demand continues to rise. Owing to their capacity to effectively assimilate carbon and nutrients while simultaneously generating biomass with potential valorization pathways, Chlorella spp. offers a dual benefit of contaminant removal and resource recovery. However, existing algal studies remain predominantly at the laboratory scale, and their competitive advantages have not been demonst

Bridging technology and clinical practice: innovating inpatient hyperglycaemia management in non-critical care settings.

Emerging evidence shows that suboptimal glycaemic control is associated with increased morbidity and length of stay in hospital. Various guidelines for safe and effective inpatient glycaemic control in the non-critical care setting have been published. In spite of this, implementation in practice remains limited because of the increasing number of people with diabetes admitted to hospital and staff work burden. The use of technology in the outpatient setting has led to improved glycaemic outcomes and quality of life for people with diabetes. There remains an unmet need for technology utilisati
