Assessing low-back loading during lifting using personalized electromyography-driven trunk models and NIOSH-based risk levels.

Workplace injury risk due to physically demanding tasks (e.g., repeated lifting) is currently assessed using ergonomic guidelines. The Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation (RNLE) is a commonly used approach that assesses risk of low-back loading during different lifting tasks. Advances in musculoskeletal models have enabled the estimation of physiologically valid person-specific musculoskeletal models (pEMS) driven by surface electromyography and joint angle information. These models offer realistic estimates of objective parameters such as moments and compressive and shear loads at the lumbosacral …

Applied research using the NIOSH lifting equation to optimize the design of shopping trolley for the elderly.

In the context of an aging society, products for the elderly typically need to meet the criteria of ease of use and reduction of physical fatigue. Focusing on elderly shopping scene, combined with the ergonomic principles and JACK simulation software analysis, a method of mapping NIOSH lifting equation to the product optimization design is proposed to optimize the dimensions and styling design of the elderly shopping trolley as a carrier, to optimize length, depth, and basket height from the ground. When the handle height of the elderly shopping cart is adjustable to three levels: 795 mm, 908 …

Spinal kinematic variability is increased in people with chronic low back pain during a repetitive lifting task.

Changes in spinal kinematic variability have been observed in people with chronic non-specific LBP (CNSLBP) during the performance of various repetitive functional tasks. However, the direction of these changes (i.e., less or more kinematic variability) is not consistent. This study aimed to assess differences in kinematic variability of the 3D angular displacement of thoracic and lumbar spinal segments in people with CNSLBP compared to asymptomatic individuals during a repetitive lifting task. Eleven people with CNSLBP and 11 asymptomatic volunteers performed 10 cycles of multi-planar lifting…

Influence of a passive exoskeleton on kinematics, joint moments, and self-reported ratings during a lifting task.

It was found that the Auxivo LiftSuit reduced the load on the back and hip muscles when lifting heavy loads, but its effect on lower body kinematics, joint moments, and self-reported ratings was unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of this passive lift-exoskeleton design, on lower body kinematics, joint moments, and self-reported ratings during lifting of heavy loads. Twenty healthy subjects performed lifting of heavy loads with and without the exoskeleton under surveillance of a motion capture system. Medium and maximum level adjustments of the exoskeleton, as well as n…

Argon Bioactivation of Implants Installed Simultaneously to Maxillary Sinus Lifting without Graft. An Experimental Study in Rabbits.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of the surface of titanium implants with argon plasma improved its hydrophilicity and cell adhesion, resulting in higher bone apposition on implant and graft surfaces. The spontaneous perforation over time of the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation has been documented in experimental studies at both implants and graft particles. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of plasma argon treatment of the implant surface on bone apposition and on the rate of sinus mucosa perforations. METHODS: A sinus lifting procedure was performed bilaterally in six…

The effect of head movement restriction on the kinematics of the spine during lifting and lowering tasks.

This study aimed to examine the effects of head movement restriction on relative angles and their derivatives using the stepwise segmentation approach during lifting and lowering tasks. Ten healthy men lifted and lowered a box using two styles (stoop and squat), with two loads (i.e. 10% and 20% of body weight); they performed these tasks with two instructed head postures [(1) Flexing the neck to keep contact between chin and chest over the task cycle; (2) No instruction, free head posture]. The neck flexion significantly affected the flexion angle of all segments of the spine and specifically …

Effects of stretching and warm-up routines on stability and balance during weight-lifting: a pilot investigation.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of warm-up and stretching in weight-lifting remains unknown, especially for the weight-lifter's stability and balance during lifting. METHODS: 13 subjects were randomly assigned a 10-minute stretching routine (SR) or a 10-minute warm-up routine (WR) and compared against 5 controls (no stretching or warm-up). Before and after the individually assigned routine, the participants' centre of pressure (CoP) was assessed using plantar-pressure sensors. The subjects were measured during 10 repetitions of air squat (no load, "AS"), front squat (FS; 20 kg/15 kg bar), overhead s…

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection after heavy lifting in a 25-year-old man with coronary risk factors.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a clinical condition rarely leading to acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We report the case of SCAD presenting AMI in a 25-year-old man with coronary risk factors after strenuous exercise, who was successfully treated with systemic thrombolysis. Coronary angiography revealed spiral dissection of the proximal part of the left anterior descending artery. The present case supports the occurrence of SCAD as a cause of AMI in young male patients who have coronary risk factors, after heavy lifting.

Associations of Low-Back Fatigue and Pain with Trunk Motor Variability in Repetitive Lifting: A Scoping Review.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSRepetitive lifting is a major occupational risk factor for developing low back fatigue and pain. This review aimed to identify and summarize the available evidence on how trunk motor variability (MV) may serve both as a predictor of susceptibility to fatigue/pain as well as a response to fatigue/pain during repetitive lifting tasks. Higher MV may protect workers by distributing loads and preventing overuse of the same tissues, potentially reducing the incidence or severity of fatigue/pain. However, findings also indicate that the relationship between MV, fatigue, and p…

Concurrent Validity of Two Inertial Measurement Unit Pipelines for Estimating Lumbar and Thoracic Kinematics During Lifting Tasks.

Lumbosacral and thoracolumbar kinematics are key risk factors for lifting-related low back pain, yet their measurement is typically restricted to motion capture laboratories. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer the potential to quantify spine kinematics in more naturalistic settings, but the validity of IMU-based processing pipelines relative to optical motion capture (OMC) remains unclear. Nine healthy participants performed stoop, squat, free, and asymmetric lifting tasks while IMU and OMC data were simultaneously collected to evaluate the concurrent validity of two IMU pipelines: the pr…
