BACKGROUND: Lower lip reconstruction remains a challenging task due to multi-functional and high aesthetic requirements that have to be achieved for successful outcome. This is particularly true to near-total lower lip defects, encompassing over 70% of lower lip loss due to cancer, trauma or burns. Despite the fact that numerous flaps and their modifications have been described over the past century, only a few valuable techniques and concepts withstood the test of time for sub-total lower lip defects, each having their own drawbacks. We describe a new approach to these defects combining bilat

Cysticercosis is a condition in which a human acts as the intermediate host of Taenia solium, a pork tapeworm. The larvae infestation sites frequently include cerebral tissue, ocular organs, and muscles. The present case report describes a rare incidence of cysticercosis in the oral region.

Actinic cheilitis is a potentially premalignant condition involving predominantly the vermilion of the lower lip. The aim of the current paper was to review the clinical presentation of actinic cheilitis and demonstrate the development of management plans using a series of cases. These are designed to provide immediate treatment where required but also to address the medium and long-term requirements of the patient. The authors suggest that the clinical examination of lips and the assessment of actinic cheilitis and other lip pathology become a regular part of the routine soft tissue examinati

As a premalignant condition, actinic cheilitis requires therapy, and multiple treatment modalities have been described. Although frequently reported in Angloamerican literature, CO(2) laser vaporization for the treatment of actinic cheilitis is scarcely mentioned in German journals. We report 19 cases of CO(2) laser treatment of actinic cheilitis. In only one case, the ablation proved to be too superficial after the first treatment. Except in this case we did not see any recurrences and only one case with minor scarring within a median follow up period of 16 months. In comparison with other tr

OBJECTIVE: Determine the prevalence, types, and geographical distribution of oral tumors in dogs in Switzerland to provide insights into demographics, tumor characteristics, and trends.
METHODS: The medical and pathology records of dogs diagnosed with oral tumors from 2012 to 2022 were sourced from diagnostic laboratories in Switzerland. The focus was on histopathologically confirmed oral neoplasms. Inflammatory, viral, and cystic lesions were excluded. Geographic trends were analyzed by use of postal addresses, revealing local distributions.
RESULTS: Of the 948 reports, 773 cases fulfilled

Fibrolipoma is defined as a typical lipoma transected by variable amounts of paucicellular and collagenous fibrous components. Oral and lingual fibrolipomas are well-recognized histological entities in human medicine that are slightly more prevalent in females, occur most commonly after the fourth decade, and arise from the buccal mucosa. The documentation of this neoplasm in the oral cavity is lacking in veterinary medicine. Through a multi-institutional retrospective compilation of cases submitted to diagnostic pathology services, here we describe the clinical and pathologic features of oral

The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of the mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from the pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, also affecting the head and neck region. SFTs are benign in most cases, but 10%-15% of extrapleural SFTs show malignant behavior in the form of recurrent or metastatic disease. We present the case of a 25-year-old female who presented with an asymptomatic left-sided facial swelling of over three years. She had a diffuse swelling in t

Feline sarcoids (or cutaneous fibropapillomas) are rare dermal neoplasms. There are currently no reported statistics concerning their clinical behaviour. Our objective with this retrospective, multi-institutional study was to describe the clinical presentation and biological behaviour of sarcoids in cats and to determine the oncologic outcome following surgical resection. Medical records from a laboratory database and six contributing institutions were searched to identify cats with histologically confirmed sarcoids. Forty-two cats were included in the study. The majority of sarcoids occurred

The value of population screening for oral cancer among male adults as a method of oral cancer control is an issue of great controversy. Screening programs have different objectives, varying costs, undocumented benefits, and some may have harmful effects. Consequently, these programs are not unanimously accepted and with the many constraints in evaluating these programs, the future of screening as oral cancer prevention strategy is questionable. Basic issues in the prevalence of oral cancer include factors affecting the patient such as age, sex, exposure to carcinogens, plus the site or the ty

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Described in 2013, intraneural pseudoperineuriomatous proliferations (IPP) present perineurial cells concentrically surrounding the axon-Schwann cell complexes, forming pseudo-onion bulbs. Different from intraneural perineuriomas, rare neoplasms with differentiation of perineural cells, IPP are reactive, associated with fibrosis, and frequently diagnosed histologically as traumatic neuroma (TN). The aim of this study was to characterize IPP by exploring its clinicopathological features and differentiating it from the main neural lesions that are part of the histopatholo

Primary malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is uncommon. Four cases are presented. The average age is in the sixth decade. Early diagnosis is difficult and prognosis is generally poor. Efforts toward earlier detection and treatment are recommended.

A 29-year old man had an unusual unilateral lesion of the mucous membranes of the mouth, including the lips, buccal mucosa, hard and soft palate, and uvula. The lesion was a conglomerate of tiny papillomas and had been present since birth. At the age of 8 years, a mass extending from the uvula into the pharynx was surgically excised. The histopathological findings showed acanthosis, papillomatosis, and an inflammatory infiltrate. The findings represent a rare case and perhaps a unique one, to my knowledge.
