Prefrontal-occipitoparietal coupling underlies late latency human neuronal responses to emotion.

Enhanced late positive potentials (LPPs) evoked by highly arousing unpleasant and pleasant stimuli have been consistently observed in event-related potential experiments in humans. Although the psychological factors modulating the LPP have been studied in detail, the neurobiological underpinnings of this response remain poorly understood. Current models suggest that the LPP is a product of both an automatic facilitation of perceptual activity, as well as postperceptual processing under cognitive control. Here we applied magnetoencephalography (MEG) and beamformer analysis combined with Granger…

Supplementary motor cortex involvement in reading epilepsy revealed by magnetic source imaging.

Reading epilepsy (RE) is an idiopathic reflex epilepsy syndrome characterized by perioral myoclonic jerks (PMJs) during reading associated with left-dominant frontotemporal spike-wave discharges (SWDs). To better understand the pathophysiology of this syndrome, we studied a 45-year-old patient using magnetic source imaging (MSI). The patient underwent two whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings (Elekta Neuromag Oy) within 2 months while reading aloud. Forty-two SWDs associated with PMJs were recorded and averaged with respect to SWDs peak power. Epileptic discharges were then recons…

Cortical hyperexcitability in migraine patients before and after sodium valproate treatment.

DC-magnetoencephalography (DC-MEG)waveforms arising during migraine aura were used to determine the effectiveness of prophylactic medication therapy on neuronal hyperexcitability. Nine patients were prescribed valproate (Depakote) for migraine prophylaxis. MEG scans were recorded during visual stimulation before commencing medication and again after 30 days of daily use of valproate. Cortical brain activity was recorded during stimulation with a black-and-white circular checkerboard pattern alternating at 8 Hz and were analyzed with MR-FOCUSS. Large-amplitude DC-MEG signals, imaged to extended…

Lack of activation of human secondary somatosensory cortex in Unverricht-Lundborg type of progressive myoclonus epilepsy.

Previous electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic studies have demonstrated giant early somatosensory cortical responses in patients with cortical myoclonus. We applied whole-scalp magnetoencephalography to study activation sequences of the somatosensory cortical network in 7 patients with Unverricht-Lundborg-type progressive myoclonus epilepsy diagnostically verified by DNA analysis. Responses to electric median nerve stimuli displayed 30-msec peaks at the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex that were four times stronger in patients than in control subjects. The amplitudes o…

Human brain mapping in dystonia reveals both endophenotypic traits and adaptive reorganization.

Dystonia has a wide clinical spectrum from early-onset generalized to late-onset sporadic, task-specific forms. The genetic origin of the former has been clearly established. A critical role of repetitive skilled motor tasks has been put forward for the latter, while underlying vulnerability traits are still being searched for. Using magnetoencephalography, we looked for structural abnormalities reflecting a preexisting dysfunction. We studied finger representations of both hands in the primary sensory cortex, as compared in 23 patients with unilateral task-specific dystonia and 20 control sub…

Noninvasive somatosensory monitoring of the injured inferior alveolar nerve using magnetic source imaging.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates magnetoencephalography (MEG) as an objective monitor for the evaluation of post-traumatic inferior alveolar nerve injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients with unilateral inferior alveolar nerve injuries were assessed using conventional sensory examination techniques. All damaged nerves, and their contralateral controls, were then reexamined using MEG technology. Regions of somatosensory-induced magnetic activity were superimposed on three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to give cortical magnetic source images (MSI). All patients subsequen…

Spectral specificity of gamma-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation over motor cortex during sequential movements.

Motor control requires the coordination of spatiotemporally precise neural oscillations in the beta and gamma range within the primary motor cortex (M1). Recent studies have shown that motor performance can be differentially modulated based on the spectral target of noninvasive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), with gamma-frequency tACS improving motor performance. However, the spectral specificity for eliciting such improvements remains unknown. Herein, we derived the peak movement-related gamma frequency in 25 healthy adults using magnetoencephalography and a motor control…

MRI-constrained spectral imaging of benzodiazepine modulation of spontaneous neuromagnetic activity in human cortex.

Spontaneous electromagnetic brain rhythms have been widely used in human neuropharmacology, but their applicability is complicated by the difficulties to localize their origins in the human cortex. Here, we used a novel multi-modal non-invasive imaging approach to localize lorazepam (30 microg/kg i.v.) modulation of cortical generators of spontaneous brain rhythms. Eight healthy subjects were measured with 306-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG) in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled (saline), crossover design. For anatomically realistic source modeling, wavelet-transformed MEG dat…

Spatiotemporal maps of past-tense verb inflection.

Does the brain inflect verbs by applying rules, by associative retrieval of the inflected form, or both? We used whole-head magnetoencephalography to spatiotemporally map the brain response underlying verb past-tense inflection. Placing either regular or irregular verbs into the past tense sequentially modulates the bilateral visual, left inferotemporal, posterior superior temporal (Wernicke's area), left inferior prefrontal (Broca's area), and right prefrontal cortices. Although irregular and regular verb inflection evokes similar cortical response patterns, differences in specific frontotemp…

Robust and replicable effects of ageing on resting-state brain electrophysiology measured with MEG.

Non-invasive recordings of brain electrophysiology provide credible insights into decline in neuronal functioning with age. New approaches are required to translate these results into compelling clinical metrics and meet the global challenge of preserving brain health in ageing. Changes in neuronal dynamics with ageing are observable in the power spectra of EEG and MEG recordings. Highly promising candidates for electrophysiological markers have been identified, but progress is hindered by substantial methodological variability across studies. This makes it challenging to establish a clear con

Spontaneous Oscillatory Activity in Episodic Timing: An EEG Replication Study and Its Limitations.

Episodic timing refers to the one-shot, automatic encoding of temporal information in the brain, in the absence of attention to time. A previous magnetoencephalography (MEG) study showed that the relative burst time of spontaneous alpha oscillations (α) during quiet wakefulness was a selective predictor of retrospective duration estimation. This observation was interpreted as α embodying the "ticks" of an internal contextual clock. Herein, we replicate and extend these findings using electroencephalography (EEG), assess robustness to time-on-task effects, and test the generalizability in virtu…

Confirmation of a Useful Dark-Room Resting-State Procedure: Periodic and Aperiodic MEG Activity in Children.

In a previous paper, we showed in children 6-12 years old that a resting-state (RS) eyes-open dark room (DR) task provides RS parietal-occipital alpha measures similar to those obtained using the standard RS eyes-closed (EC) exam. Results provided initial evidence that the RS DR procedure is feasible and useful with populations often excluded from electrophysiology RS studies, such as participants who cannot remain awake with their eyes closed or cannot remain still for an extended period. The present study extended the DR and EC comparisons to a much larger sample of children spanning a wider

Cortical representation of quantification: The role of the left anterior temporal lobe.

Quantifiers like 'all' or 'some' play a key role in how we construct meaning from language, but their underlying neurobiological mechanisms are still unclear. One difficulty in determining the neural correlates of quantification is that the interpretation of these elements depends on multiple elements of a sentence, unlike other determiners, such as 'the.' This makes it difficult to isolate neural signals that are specific to the logical properties of quantifiers but orthogonal to the intricacies of predictive processing. In this magnetoencephalography study, we overcame this challenge by empl…

Noninvasive Biomarkers for Assessing the Excitatory/Inhibitory Imbalance in Children with Epilepsy.

Epileptic seizures involve a cortical excitation-inhibition imbalance driven by dysfunctional interneurons that contribute to gamma oscillation generation. While impaired gamma oscillations are commonly reported in epilepsy, the dynamics of broadband and narrowband gamma as well as beta oscillations remain underexplored. These oscillations may serve as noninvasive electrophysiological markers associated with altered cortical dynamics, potentially reflecting underlying excitation-inhibition imbalance in epilepsy. Here, we recorded high-density electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography d…

Macroscopic brain dynamics beyond contralateral primary motor cortex for movement prediction.

This study investigates the complex relationship between upper limb movement direction and macroscopic neural signals in the brain, which is critical for understanding brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Conventional BCI research has primarily focused on a local area, such as the contralateral primary motor cortex (M1), relying on the population-based decoding method with microelectrode arrays. In contrast, macroscopic approaches such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) utilize numerous electrodes to cover broader brain regions. This study probes the potential differe…
