Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) refers to bacterial maxillary sinusitis caused by infectious maxillary dental pathology or dental procedures. ODS is the most common cause of unilateral sinusitis and a common cause of extrasinus infectious complications, including orbital and brain abscesses. While managing ODS has been highly successful, the greatest challenge can be recognizing and confirming the diagnosis. Parvimonas micra and Fusobacterium nucleatum are commensal pathogens very rarely isolated simultaneously in clinical specimens. We report a case of chronic maxillary sinusitis caused by these two pathogens, presumably resulting from a co-existing dental infection.

The effect on the nasopharyngeal flora of 7 days of amoxicillin-clavulanate or 5 days of 800 mg once a day was studied in 50 adults with acute sinusitis. The numbers of potential pathogens and interfering alpha-hemolytic streptococci were equally reduced after both therapies.
