An Uncommon Presentation of Eagle Syndrome in a Primary Care Patient with Chronic Neck Pain: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Eagle syndrome is an uncommon medical illness that can manifest as neck pain in primary care. It results from an abnormally unilateral or bilateral long styloid process that may compress and affect adjacent structures, which leads to the symptoms. Classical Eagle syndrome has been commonly reported, but this case highlights the uncommon involvement of autonomic nerve dysfunction. CASE REPORT This case report details a 43-year-old woman with chronic neck pain for 5 years who saw numerous medical professionals and underwent 8 physiotherapy sessions. Marginal improvement of her neck pa

Promotion effect of TGF-β-Zfp423-ApoD pathway on lip sensory recovery after nerve sacrifice caused by nerve collateral compensation.

Resection of oral and maxillofacial tumors is often accompanied by the inferior alveolar nerve neurectomy, resulting in abnormal sensation in lower lip. It is generally believed that spontaneous sensory recovery in this nerve injury is difficult. However, during our follow-up, patients with inferior alveolar nerve sacrifice showed different degrees of lower lip sensory recovery. In this study, a prospective cohort study was conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon and analyze the factors influencing sensory recovery. Facial attractiveness of skeletal class I and class II malocclusion as perceived by laypeople, patients and clinicians.

BACKGROUND: Physical attractiveness is dependent on facial appearance. The facial profile plays a crucial role in facial attractiveness and can be improved with orthodontic treatment. The aesthetic assessment of facial appearance may be influenced by the cultural background and education of the assessor and dependent upon the experience level of dental professionals. This study aimed to evaluate how the sagittal jaw relationship in Class I and Class II individuals affects facial attractiveness, and whether the assessor's professional education and background affect the perception of facial att

Restless legs syndrome as a first manifestation of a cerebral infarct.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is frequently associated with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, and the fact that about 30% of affected children continue to show OSA after adenotonsillectomy (AT) suggests the presence of some other predisposing factor(s). We hypothesized that abnormal maxillofacial morphology may be a predisposing factor for residual OSA in pediatric patients. METHODS: A total of 13 pediatric OSA patients (9 boys and 4 girls, age [median (interquartile range)] = 4.7 (4.0, 6.4) y, body mass index (BMI) z score = -0.3 (-0.8, 0.5)) who had undergone AT were r

High-dose retinoic acid modulates rat calvarial osteoblast biology.

Retinoic acid has been shown to adversely affect craniofacial development. Cleft palate and craniosynostosis are two examples of craniofacial defects associated with prenatal exposure to this agent. Although the effects of retinoic acid on cephalic neural crest-derived tissues have previously been studied, the specific effects of retinoic acid on the cellular biology of osteoblasts remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to analyze in detail the effects of pharmacologic doses of retinoic acid on the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts derived from an intramembranous source.

Midface growth in patients with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder involving abnormalities of the hands, feet, skin, and teeth and clefts of the lip and palate. Patients with this syndrome have abnormal facial features--namely, clefts of the lip and palate--and abnormal dentition, which could affect the growth of their midface region. The purpose of this study was to describe characteristics of midface growth in patients with this syndrome. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for eight postoperative patients seen at the cleft clinic at The Childr

Computer planning and intraoperative navigation in cranio-maxillofacial surgery.

Preoperative computer design and stereolithographic modeling combined with intraoperative navigation provide a useful guide for and possibly more accurate reconstruction of a variety of complex cranio-maxillofacial deformities. Although probably not necessary for routine use, the author's early experience confirms that of other surgeons with more than a decade of experience: computer-assisted surgery is indicated for complex posttraumatic or postablative reconstruction of the orbits, cranium, maxilla, and mandible; total temporomandibular joint replacement; orthognathic surgery; and complex de

Postoperative infections in craniofacial reconstructive procedures.

The rate of, and possible risk factors for, postoperative craniofacial infection is unclear. To investigate this problem, we reviewed 349 cases of craniofacial skeletal procedures performed from 1996 to 1999 at our institution. Infection rate was determined and correlated with the use of implants, operative site, and cause of deformity. The inclusion criteria consisted of all procedures requiring autologous or prosthetic implantation in craniofacial skeletal sites, as well as all procedures involving bone or cartilage resection, osteotomies, debridement, reduction and/or fixation. Procedures t

Clinical findings and associated MRI findings of temporomandibular joint disc degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) present with a wide spectrum of symptoms, and many of these are linked to structural changes within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Degenerative changes of the TMJ disc, including thinning, perforation, and positional changes, are common in symptomatic patients. MRI is the gold standard for evaluating soft tissues, but the relationship between clinical findings and specific MRI-detected disc degenerations remains unclear. This study aims to review the clinical symptoms reported by patients with TMD and evaluate if these symptoms are linked to MR
