OBJECTIVE: To identify the types and severity of head, face and neck (HFN) injuries, which occurred as a result of a bomb explosion and reached serious life-threatening levels, using radiological imaging methods, and to discuss the options of treatment at the time of presentation.
METHODS: Of the 16 patients brought to the emergency department, 14 with HFN injuries were included in the study. Computed tomography (CT) and radiography scans were performed at the time of presentation in all patients, except for one. The injuries were divided into three groups according to their localization as h

Falls, assaults, road traffic accidents and sporting injuries are some of the common causes of facial bone fractures. Fractures to the zygomatic complex, or cheekbone, are one of the most common fractures to the facial skeleton. These fractures can be easily missed on assessment and examination and thus left undiagnosed. This can lead to aesthetic deformities to the facial region and, rarely, orbital compartment syndrome due to a retrobulbar haemorrhage or other ocular complications. Emergency department advanced nurse practitioners are usually the clinicians responsible for ensuring that pati

Traumatic craniofacial injuries often present as difficult reconstructive challenges for maxillofacial surgeons. Reconstruction is often complicated by significant soft tissue loss, comminuted bony fragments, a tenuous blood supply, and wound contamination. For panfacial injuries, restoration of normal facial width, facial height, and sagittal projection may be difficult to achieve. Marked swelling may limit the surgeons' ability to palpate and recognize subtle bony defects and malunion. Furthermore, a true 3-dimensional assessment of bony alignment may not be possible with traditional surgica

Injuries to peripheral branches (IAN, LN, LBN) of the trigeminal nerve during the removal of M3s are known and accepted risks in oral and maxillofacial surgery practice. These risks might be reduced by modifications of evaluation or surgical techniques, depending on the surgeon's judgment in individual patients. If a nerve injury does occur, prompt recognition, subjective and objective evaluation, and development of a treatment plan, if the sensory deficit fails to resolve in a reasonable period and is unacceptable to the patient, give the patient the best chance of achieving improvement or rec

A clinico-statistical study was performed on 40 children aged less than 11 years of age, with maxillofacial fractures. Age, sex, type of fracture, incidence, aetiology, methods of treatment and complications were studied. The ratio of boys to girls was 2.6:1.0 and the highest incidence was at age 10 years. Mandibular fractures were the most common and the condylar region was particularly affected. Falls, road traffic accidents and sport injuries, including play accidents, were the major causes of these injuries. Conservative therapy, such as maxillo-mandibular fixation using eyelet wiring, was

Trauma is the fourth major cause of mortality in the Western countries, of which approximately one half involve maxillofacial injury. Statistics reported by emergency room officials show motor vehicles cause many of the injuries and deaths that occur in Iran. Having completed a retrospective descriptive study of 200 patients who experienced maxillofacial trauma, the authors report its occurrence with respect to age, sex, trauma type, and site of injury so as to evaluate the operational functionality of the Department of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery of Hazrat-e Rasoul Akram Hospital f

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To conduct a retrospective analysis of incident reports concerning dental injury, the most common cause for litigation against anesthesiologists, to determine specific risk factors that will help in formulating a risk reduction strategy for this clinical problem.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review of a large professional liability insurer.
INTERVENTIONS: Of 40 hospitals that report to the MRM Co. as part of the professional liability insurance, during the years 1992-1999, 18 hospitals reported dental injury. A Maxillofacial surgeon (GN) and an anesthesiologist (ES), using a

Dentists may be asked to provide consultations for patients who have sustained trauma to their facial structures. Supraorbital rim fractures, although uncommon, must be recognized and promptly referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or other specialist skilled in the management of facial bone fractures. Supraorbital rim fractures commonly coexist with other craniomaxillofacial injuries, especially with fractures of the anterior table of the frontal sinus. In this article, we review the frequency, management and complications associated with the treatment of supraorbital rim fractures in …

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants are being increasingly used to reconstruct defects in the oral and maxillofacial region. This article reports a special case of a patient with major destruction in his maxilla due to a war injury. The resultant defect was reconstructed with a 3D-printed, patient-specific, PEEK implant, restoring acceptable function and aesthetics. The patient followed up for 13 months and showed no technical or biological complications, proving the reliability of this treatment option for recreating severe maxillofacial deformities, and benefiting from the advantage they of

The association of Le Fort fractures and those of the nasoorbito-etmoidal complex represent severe injuries usually associated to traffic accidents or physical violence. The occurrence of such combination of fractures represents a challenge for the maxillofacial surgeon due to the great index of comminuted and displacement fragments. The initial evaluation represents the opportunity to identify and treat possible life-threatening complications such as brain damage or airway compromise; this first evaluation will also allow the establishment of diagnosis and a suitable surgical plan in order to

Maxillofacial injuries are often seen in patients with multiple injury. The principal problem is control of the airway and treatment of shock. Surgical procedure and anaesthetic management have to consider the priority of stabilization of vital functions. Injury and shock lead to alterations in circulation, lung function, and electrolyte balances, which the anaesthesist has to bear in mind. Orotracheal intubation should be performed primarily, the definite control of the airway depends on the degree of trauma and the expected course. If the patient requires longterm ventilation a tracheostomy …

Maxillofacial traumatic injuries can damage the jaw, teeth, and soft tissues of the head and neck region. When these injuries occur, best practice is to reconstruct as comprehensively as is clinically prudent at time of injury. Smart and efficient procedures during the initial surgery can minimize subsequent reconstructive procedures in scope and number, minimize expense, and result in a better final aesthetic and functional outcome. Restoration of anterior alveolar jaw fractures with comminuted or avulsed segments becomes a complex prospect when left untreated after initial trauma or injury a

The role of a sports mouthguard has been well established as one of protecting teeth from trauma particularly during contact sports. The aim of this study is to review the roles of sports mouthguard at both an elite and recreational level. From the history of the first mouthguards, to a modern custom-made mouthguard, the role of the mouthguard has expanded. This review will look at the development of the mouthguard, the materials used to manufacture modern mouthguards and the different types available to elite and recreational athletes from a variety of sports. The mouthguard is now recognized

BACKGROUND Submental intubation, a technique often considered a good alternative for managing the airway in challenging maxillofacial surgical scenarios, plays a pivotal role in providing accessibility to the surgical site and ensuring airway safety, particularly in cases involving facial fractures. This innovative approach not only grants surgeons adequate access to the operative field but also mitigates potential complications associated with traditional intubation methods, making it a valuable tool in dealing with complex facial trauma cases. CASE REPORT A 37-year-old man arrived at the Eme

The development of phenotypic characteristics is believed to be stabilised within certain limits of variability by processes described as canalisation or developmental homeostasis. Dental asymmetry is thought to reflect the relative success that developmental homeostasis has in countering developmental disturbances. The present study demonstrated that dental asymmetry of the permanent dentition was generally higher in non-Down retarded subjects whose mental retardation was associated with a prenatal rather than a postnatal or birth related insult. Because variations in the size and shape of te
