Evaluation of Meniscus Elasticity with Shear Wave Elastography in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate possible elasticity changes in the menisci of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus using sh … medial and lateral meniscal bodies of both knees in the coronal plane. The stiffness values of the meniscus were measured three times and the mean value of these three measurements was recorded. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between meniscal thickness in diabetic patients and control group (p > 0.05). Bilateral meniscal stiffness values of …

Stener-like lesion of the lateral meniscus in the setting of a multiligamentous knee injury: A case report.

Traumatic dislocations of the knee can result in significant soft tissue damage including multiligamentous and meniscal knee injury. When a meniscal tear involves the posterior horn, the meniscus loses one of its attachments to the tibia and can become extruded from the joint. Stener-like lesions of the knee have been reported throughout the literature; however, they have been exclusively described as a distal tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) lying superficial to the pes anserine tendon which prevents anatomic healing. The purpose of this report is to present a previously unreporte…

[Progress on study of factors influencing the prognosis and complications of surgery for discoid meniscus injury in children].

The discoid meniscus is a common congenital meniscal malformation that is prevalent mainly in Asians and often occurs in the lateral discoid meniscus. Patients with asymptomatic discoid meniscus are usually treated by conservative methods such as observation and injury avoidance, while patients with symptoms and tears need to be treated surgically. Arthroscopic saucerization combined with partial meniscectomy and meniscus repair is the most common surgical approach., and early to mid-term reports are good. The prognostic factors are the patient's age at surgery、follow-up time and type of surge…

"Flipped Lid" Fracture of the Lateral Tibial Plateau with Dislocated Lateral Meniscus: A Case Report.

CASE: We present a rare "flipped lid" type of fracture of the lateral tibial plateau with dislocation of the lateral meniscus into the notch with intact roots. This was fixed using headless screws through arthrotomy and peripheral suturing of the meniscus. At the 1-year follow-up, although there was terminal restriction of 10° flexion with redislocation of the lateral meniscus, the patient was able to perform all daily activities and declined further surgery. CONCLUSION: Flipped lid-type fracture is rare and results in good outcome when fixed early. Meniscal dislocation repair requires close …

The relationship of proximal lateral collateral ligament hyperintensity with knee joint ligament and meniscus pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Hyperintensity in the proximal lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is often confusing. This appearance may be alone or accompany other pathologies. PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the signal intensity (SI) change in the proximal LCL and the knee joint pathologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The knee MRI scans taken between 2020 and 2022 were queried retrospectively. Patients with acute trauma, instability, knee surgery, or high-grade osteoarthritis were excluded. Included patients were divided into two groups as normal SI and increased SI according to proximal LCL. The

Enhancing autophagy and energy metabolism in the meniscus can delay the occurrence of PTOA in ACLT rat.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease characterized by the destruction of the articular cartilage, meniscus and the like. Autophagy and cellular energy metabolism are the mechanisms by which cells maintain homeostasis. However, little is known about the effects of autophagy and cellular energy metabolism on meniscus degeneration, and the pathogenesis of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) after the meniscal injury is rarely reported. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in autophagy and cellular energy metabolism in the meniscus …

Effect of Suppression of Rotational Joint Instability on Cartilage and Meniscus Degeneration in Mouse Osteoarthritis Model.

OBJECTIVE: Joint instability and meniscal dysfunction contribute to the onset and progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA). In the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model, secondary OA occurs due to the rotational instability and increases compressive stress resulting from the meniscal dysfunction. We created a new controlled abnormal tibial rotation (CATR) model that reduces the rotational instability that occurs in the DMM model. So, we aimed to investigate whether rotational instability affects articular cartilage degeneration using the DMM and CATR models, as confirmed using hist…

Medial meniscus posterior root repair prevents the progression of subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee.

BACKGROUND: Medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) causes medial meniscus extrusion (MME) and leads to subchondral insufficiency fracture of the knee (SIFK). However, the progression of SIFK after MMPRT pullout repair remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the progression of SIFK and compare clinical outcomes in patients with SIFK to those without SIFK after MMPRT pullout repair. We hypothesized that the progression of SIFK would be prevented by MMPRT pullout repair, and clinical outcomes would improve in all patients. METHODS: The SIFK grade (1-4) was evaluated using T2-fat su…

The Meniscus in Normal and Osteoarthritic Tissues: Facing the Structure Property Challenges and Current Treatment Trends.

The treatment of meniscus injuries has recently been facing a paradigm shift toward the field of tissue engineering, with the aim of regenerating damaged and diseased menisci as opposed to current treatment techniques. This review focuses on the structure and mechanics associated with the meniscus. The meniscus is defined in terms of its biological structure and composition. Biomechanics of the meniscus are discussed in detail, as an understanding of the mechanics is fundamental for the development of new meniscal treatment strategies. Key meniscal characteristics such as biological function, …

Proteoglycans contribute locally to swelling, but globally to compressive mechanics, in intact cervine medial meniscus.

Loss of charged proteoglycans in the knee meniscus, which aid in the support of compressive loads by entraining water, is an effect of degeneration and is often associated with osteoarthritis. In healthy menisci, proteoglycan content is highest in the inner white zone and decreases towards the peripheral red zone. We hypothesized that loss of proteoglycans would reduce both osmotic swelling and compressive stiffness, spatially localized to the avascular white zone of the meniscus. This hypothesis was tested by targeted enzymatic digestion of proteoglycans using hyaluronidase in intact cervine …

Postoperative change in the length and extrusion of the medial meniscus after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: The medial meniscus is a secondary stabilizer of anterior tibial translation in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient knees. ACL reconstruction effectively restores an increased anterior tibial translation in the ACL-deficient knee. However, knee osteoarthritis sometimes develops in ACL-reconstructed patients during a long-term follow-up period. We hypothesized that the medial meniscal position would be different between the ACL-deficient and reconstructed knees. The aim of this study was to investigate pre-operative and postoperative location of the medial meniscus in patients w…

An osteophyte in the tibial plateau is a risk factor for allograft extrusion after meniscus allograft transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Osteophytes can be observed on the tibial plateau during meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT). However, no studies to date have evaluated the effect of these osteophytes on meniscus allograft extrusion. HYPOTHESIS: Osteophyte excision in the tibial plateau could reduce extrusion of the transplanted meniscus and improve short-term clinical outcomes with meniscus allograft transplantation. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Between October 2004 and July 2012, a total of 323 patients underwent MAT at a single institution. Of these, 88 patients had a peri…

Discoid meniscus associated with agenesis of the anterior cruciate ligament in an 8-year-old child.

Among the congenital anomalies involving the lateral compartment of the knee, the combination of both a discoid meniscus and agenesis of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is extremely rare and probably underestimated due to the presence of a meniscofemoral ligament often mistaken for an intact ACL. The therapeutic management of such abnormalities is not univocal and highly depends on their clinical impact. We report on the observations of an 8-year-old boy presenting with a cystic formation on a lateral discoid meniscus associated with agenesis of the ACL and the presence of an anterior lat…
