Pathological enlargement of midbrain Virchow-Robin spaces: a rare cause of obstructive hydrocephalus.

Midbrain multiloculated cystic formations can rarely origin by enlargement of Virchow-Robin spaces surrounding mesencephalo-thalamic artery and branches of the collicular and accessory collicular arteries. They can determine several pictures of midbrain syndrome and obstructive hydrocephalus. The authors describe a 38 year-old man affected by a Benedikt's syndrome related to a midbrain multicystic formation. Clinical course, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic choice are here also briefly discussed.

[Pontine stroke due to vasospasm secondary to perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage].

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages generally have a good short and long term outcome, especially those with a perimesencephalic location. Vasospasm is an uncommon complication of this type of subarachnoid hemorrhage, and ischemic cerebral lesions related to vasospasm are even less frequent. CASE REPORT: A 46 year-old man was admitted with a perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage. Angiographic study performed on admission was normal. Two weeks later he developed dysarthria and right faciobrachial paresis. Transcranial doppler showed a diffuse and moderate incr

[Peduncular hallucinosis due to a small hemorrhage around the substantia nigra: a case report].

An 81-year-old female developed peduncular hallucination due to a small hemorrhage around the right substantia nigra is reported. Her hallucination was visual, not accompanying any other type of hallucination. It was vivid, colorful, well described, and recognized as unreal by herself. Different from most of the previous reports, she had no sleep abnormality and the hallucination occurred in daytime and at night, not relating to eye opening or closing. As the lesion of this case was quite restricted to around the right substantia nigra and not affecting the brainstem reticular formation, we sp

[Isolated hemi-ataxia as a sign of mesencephalic lacunar infarction].

INTRODUCTION: Lesions of the dento-rubro-thalamo-cortical pathway may cause homolateral or contralateral hemiataxia, depending on whether they are found above or below the decussation which occurs at the level of the inferior colliculus. Most mesencephalic infarctions causing hemiataxia also show oculomotor involvement with nuclear or fascicular lesions of the third cranial nerves. This was not seen in the case we report. CLINICAL CASE: We describe the case of a diabetic patient with a permanent right appendicular hemiataxia, without oculomotor involvement, caused by a lacunar infarct shown o

[Isolated infranuclear oculomotor nerve palsy caused by traumatic midbrain hemorrhage: case report].

Traumatic brain stem hemorrhage is often associated with severe head injury and has a high mortality rate. When these patients survive, the midbrain syndromes are usually complicated. The authors report an unusual case with isolated oculomotor nerve palsy caused by acute traumatic midbrain hemorrhage. A 50-year-old woman was brought to Kobe City General Hospital because she had fallen off a bicycle and hit the face severely on the ground. On admission, she was drowsy. Neurological examination revealed normal muscle tone in all extremities without motor or sensory disturbance. Deep-tendon refle

Distribution of dopamine in the forebrain and midbrain of the red-eared turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans, reinvestigated using antibodies against dopamine.

The distribution of dopamine (DA) immunoreactivity in the forebrain and midbrain of the red-eared turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans, was studied using recently developed antibodies against DA. DA-containing cells were found around the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb but not in the telencephalon proper. In the diencephalon DA cells were observed in the preoptic region, several parts of the periventricular hypothalamic nucleus, the periventricular organ, the ependymal wall of the infundibular recess, the lateral hypothalamic area and the pretectal posterodorsal nucleus. In the midbrain DA cells

Actions of cholinergic drugs on cells in the interpeduncular nucleus.

The muscarinic versus nicotinic effects of acetylcholine (ACh) on the activity of cells in the interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) of guinea pig brain slices were investigated using electrophysiologic techniques. Nicotinic and muscarinic drugs acted postsynaptically to increase the firing rate of cells in the IPN. The excitatory actions of ACh were blocked both by atropine and by d-tubocurarine. These results indicated that cholinergic receptors of IPN cells seem to have both nicotinic and muscarinic characteristics.

Microsurgery of the fourth ventricle: Part 1. Microsurgical anatomy.

Operations on the 4th ventricle offer the potential for injury of the brain stem, cerebellum, cranial nerves, and major cerebellar arteries and veins. Twenty-five cadaver brains were examined using 3x to 25x magnification to define the relationship of these vital structures to the 4th ventricle. The 4th ventricle has a roof, a floor, and two lateral recesses. Most of the cranial nerves arise near the floor, which sits on the pons and medulla. The superior half of the roof, formed by the superior medullary velum, lingula, and cerebellar peduncles, is intimately related to the cerebellomesenceph

Dorsal periaqueductal gray punishment, septal lesions and the mode of action of minor tranquilizers.

In order to study the role of the septo-hippocampal system and the dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) substance in punished behavior and in the action of minor tranquilizers, two groups of rats were trained to lever press on a continuous reinforcement schedule of food presentation. In one group, every response was subsequently punished by foot-shock delivery; in the other, by brief electrical stimulation of the DPAG of the mesencephalon. In both groups response rats were reduced to less than 10% of pre-punishment rates, but not completely supressed. Response rates did not significantly differ b…

Computerized tomographic definition of mesencephalic hematoma with evacuation through pedunculotomy. Case report.

A 10-year-old boy, who presented with symptoms of a progressive hemorrhagic stroke, had suffered a spontaneous midbrain hematoma. The extent of the clot was detailed by computerized tomography and the lesion was surgically removed through pedunculotomy.

Three cases of communication syringomyelia secondary to midbrain gliomas.

Three cases of midbrain gliomas are descrbied clinically and pathologically. In each case high pressure symptoms were followed by visual disturbance and the onset of syringomyelia symptoms before death. All the patients had hydrocephalus. In one case with concomitant syringobulbia, the syrinx appeared to due to CSF communicating with the cord cavity through the tissues of the brain stem. In the other cases the communication between the CSF pathways and the syrinx was at the usual site, through the central canal at the obex.

The pontocerebellar projection onto the paramedian lobule in the cat: an experimental study with the use of horseradish peroxidase as a tracer.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into cerebellar cortex of the paramedian lobule in 12 cats, and the ensuing distribution of labeled cells in the pontine nuclei was mapped in some detail. The cells in the pontine gray which give origin to fibers to the paramedian lobule lie together, in part in groups, and in part in columns. The columns are situated both medial and ventrolateral to the peduncle, as well as in the dorsolateral pontine nucleus. The projection is bilateral with a clearcut contralateral preponderance, except in the lateralmost region in the dorsolateral nucleus, which pr
