Differential responses of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and right posterior superior temporal sulcus to spontaneous mentalizing.

Previous research suggests a role of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) in metacognitive representation of social information, while the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) has been linked to social perception. This study targeted these functional roles in the context of spontaneous mentalizing. An animated shapes task was presented to 46 subjects during functional magnetic resonance imaging. Stimuli consisted of video clips depicting animated shapes whose movement patterns prompt spontaneous mentalizing or simple intention attribution. Based on their differential response d

Explicit Agency in Patients with Cervical Dystonia: Altered Recognition of Temporal Discrepancies between Motor Actions and Their Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the cognitive processing of movement have been demonstrated in patients with dystonia. The sense of agency, which is the experience of initiating and controlling one's own actions, has never before been studied in these patients. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the sense of agency is altered in patients with cervical dystonia. METHODS: We used an explicit metacognitive agency task in which participants had to catch targets with a cursor by moving a computer's mouse. The task included several conditions in which the control over the cursor could be disrupted b

Oops, scratch that! Monitoring one's own errors during mental calculation.

The feeling of error (FOE) is the subjective experience that something went wrong during a reasoning or calculation task. The main goal of the present study was to assess the accuracy of the FOE in the context of mental mathematical calculation. We used the number bisection task (NBT) to evoke this metacognitive feeling and assessed it by asking participants if they felt they have committed an error after solving the task. In the NBT participants have to determine whether the number presented in the middle οf a triplet corresponds to the arithmetic mean of the two outer numbers (e.g., 07_16_25

Post-event processing in social anxiety.

Clark and Wells' [1995. A cognitive model of social phobia. In: R. Heimberg, M. Liebowitz, D.A. Hope, & F.R. Schneier (Eds.) Social phobia: Diagnosis, assessment and treatment (pp. 69-93). New York: Guildford Press.] cognitive model of social phobia proposes that following a social event, individuals with social phobia will engage in post-event processing, during which they conduct a detailed review of the event. This study investigated the relationship between self-appraisals of performance and post-event processing in individuals high and low in social anxiety. Participants appraised their p

The Unlanguaged Self: Foundational Identity Languaging as a Semiotic Catalyst for Cross-Cultural Understanding.

Existing frameworks for cross-cultural understanding focus predominantly on learning about others while treating self-cultural awareness as a parallel capacity. We propose that this approach overlooks a structural upstream condition: the metacognitive articulation of one’s own foundational identity—one’s relationship to national origins and religious or philosophical grounding—which we term Foundational Identity Languaging (FIL). Drawing on Valsiner’s hierarchical model of semiotic mediation, we identify a specific failure mode in which hyper-generalized affective-semiotic fields—the deepest s

Overcoming learning barriers through knowledge management.

The ability to learn highly depends on how knowledge is managed. Specifically, different techniques for note-taking utilize different cognitive processes and strategies. In this paper, we compared dyslexic and control participants when using linear and non-linear note-taking. All our participants were professionals working in the banking and financial sector. We examined comprehension, accuracy, mental imagery & complexity, metacognition, and memory. We found that participants with dyslexia, when using a non-linear note-taking technique outperformed the control group using linear note-taking a…

Mental time travel and insight in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia features pervasive insight deficits, with many failing to recognize symptoms or the need for treatment, predictors of poorer outcomes. Rather than unitary, insight comprises clinical (awareness of illness and need for care) and cognitive (self-reflectiveness and the ability to question one's beliefs). This review examines whether mental time travel (MTT) - vivid recollection of past events and construction of detailed future scenarios - may underlie insight deficits in schizophrenia. We synthesize evidence up to May 2025 from meta-analyses, experimental studies, and neuroimaging/

Beyond the cognitive insight paradox: Self-reflectivity moderates the relationship between depressive symptoms and general psychological distress in psychosis.

BACKGROUND: People with psychosis experience significant emotional burden and distress associated with the symptomatic consequences of their … depression and distress may be more complex than a direct effect. Interventions targeted to improve metacognition by enhancing self-reflectivity might be important for lowering the psychological distress associated with depressive symptoms in people with psychosis.

Curriculum-Integrated MRI Simulation Across Successive Cohorts: A Quasi-experimental Curriculum-Development Study of Cognitive Load and Instructional Efficiency.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) training is constrained by scanner access, MR-safety requirements, service pressures, and limited opportunities for deliberate practice. Simulation can provide repeatable practice, but evidence from radiography education remains heterogeneous and often relies on reaction-level outcomes. This study aims to describe the design, implementation, and evaluation of a curriculum-integrated MRI simulation program using Kern's six-step model and cognitive load theory, while examining patterns in learner outcomes across successive cohor

Student engagement and self-regulated learning across standard and AI-enhanced flipped learning: a within-subjects longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Although AI is increasingly being integrated into flipped classrooms, little is known about how student engagement and self-regulated learning (SRL) develop across extended implementations, particularly in underrepresented higher education contexts. This study examined developmental trajectories of student engagement and SRL across a sequential implementation comprising a standard flipped phase followed by a progressively scaffolded AI-enhanced phase, representing one of the earliest longitudinal investigations of AI-enhanced flipped learning in a Central Asian higher education c

Rethinking AI in clinical decision support: a framework for reciprocal human-AI interaction.

Clinical AI systems increasingly match or exceed clinicians on some diagnostic benchmarks. Yet this reveals little about how AI output functions within clinical reasoning or how repeated reliance affects clinicians' independent capability. This paper proposes Bounded Reciprocal Adaptation for Clinician Engagement (BRACE), a framework for AI-enabled clinical decision support centred on the clinician-AI interaction rather than the model output. BRACE links three levels of support. Within a case, it makes uncertainty visible, preserves reasoning state and selectively prompts verification. Across

I Might Be Wrong: The Role of Intellectual Humility in Debiasing Surgical Education.

Surgical training has long valued decisiveness, technical excellence, and confidence. However, complex patient care also exposes surgeons an … ns with cognitive forcing strategies, diagnostic time outs, structured reflection, simulation-based metacognition training, debriefing, and checklist-based interventions. Cultivating intellectual humility through teaching, Morbidity and Mortality conferences, and attending role modeling may strengthen revisable judgment and support safer surgical care.
