Hidden half-metallicity.

Half-metals, featuring ideal 100% spin polarization without spin-orbit coupling, are widely regarded as key materials for spintronic and quantum technologies. Nevertheless, in symmetry-enforced net-zero-magnetization magnets, the mandatory degeneracy of spin-up and spin-down densities of states rigorously forbids the formation of a half-metallic state. To circumvent this fundamental restriction, we introduce the concept of hidden half-metallicity, whereby the global electronic structure of a symmetry-enforced net-zero-magnetization magnet is non-half-metallic, while each of its two symmetry-re…

[Unexpected metal in the pelvis].

A 69-year-old woman with right-sided flank pain, probably based on a ureteropelvic junction obstruction, underwent JJ-catheter placement under fluoroscopic guidance. X-ray showed an appendix filled with shot pellets. This phenomenon has been described earlier in Eskimo hunters, who were known to accidently swallow shot pellets lodged in hunted animals. Shot pellet accumulation can result in appendicitis perforata or lead poisoning.

Neurotoxicity of Metal Mixtures.

Metals are the oldest toxins known to humans. Metals differ from other toxic substances in that they are neither created nor destroyed by humans (Casarett and Doull's, Toxicology: the basic science of poisons, 8th edn. McGraw-Hill, London, 2013). Metals are of great importance in our daily life and their frequent use makes their omnipresence and a constant source of human exposure. Metals such as arsenic [As], lead [Pb], mercury [Hg], aluminum [Al] and cadmium [Cd] do not have any specific role in an organism and can be toxic even at low levels. The Substance Priority List of Agency for Toxic …

Disorders of metal metabolism.

Trace elements are chemical elements needed in minute amounts for normal physiology. Some of the physiologically relevant trace elements include iodine, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, selenium, cobalt and molybdenum. Of these, some are metals, and in particular, transition metals. The different electron shells of an atom carry different energy levels, with those closest to the nucleus being lowest in energy. The number of electrons in the outermost shell determines the reactivity of such an atom. The electron shells are divided in sub-shells, and in particular the third shell has s, p and d su…

Metal ions and carcinogenesis.

Metals are essential for the normal functioning of living organisms. Their uses in biological systems are varied, but are frequently associated with sites of critical protein function, such as zinc finger motifs and electron or oxygen carriers. These functions only require essential metals in minute amounts, hence they are termed trace metals. Other metals are, however, less beneficial, owing to their ability to promote a wide variety of deleterious health effects, including cancer. Metals such as arsenic, for example, can produce a variety of diseases ranging from keratosis of the palms and f…

Metal toxicosis in horses.

The ubiquity and stability of metals in the environment make them unique as a pollutant or an essential dietary component. Metals are neither created nor destroyed by chemical processes but are redistributed in the environment. In combination with other elements, metal compounds and alloys are essential materials of the contemporary world. Inappropriate use or distribution in the environment leads to adverse health effects on all biologic systems, including horses. Gastrointestinal upset is a common feature of acute toxicosis with metals in general. Among the metals discussed, arsenic and inor…

Heavy metal: beware.

A 19-year-old Crouzon's syndrome patient with a history of multiple craniofacial procedures presented with severe bilateral temporal and frontal depressions and metal implants protruding through the scalp in multiple locations. Preoperative analysis revealed an extensive cranial defect that had been reconstructed with multiple large metallic mesh implants. The mesh required complete removal with an autograft cranial reconstruction. We present this case to urge that caution and forethought be exercised when contemplating the use of metallic alloplasts for major craniofacial reconstructions.

Carcinogenicity and metallic implants.

The literature related to the carcinogenetic potential of metallic implants was reviewed. There were 20 cases described in which tumors were identified in proximity to metallic implants. These cases occurred over a 34-year period. Investigators have identified a 70% increased incidence of lymphomas and hematopoietic tumors over that in the general population in patients who had received total hip arthroplasties. Carcinogenicity theories include the potential direct toxicity of materials, the effects of surface properties, the electromotive potential created by dissimilar metals in contact, the…

The hard metal diseases.

Hard metal is a mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt, to which small amounts of other metals may be added. It is widely used for industrial purposes whenever extreme hardness and high temperature resistance are needed, such as for cutting tools, oil well drilling bits, and jet engine exhaust ports. Cobalt is the component of hard metal that can be a health hazard. Respiratory diseases occur in workers exposed to cobalt--either in the production of hard metal, from machining hard metal parts, or from other sources. Adverse pulmonary reactions include asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and …

Enhanced power factor by transition metal substitution in the thermoelectric Kagome metal Ni3Sn.

Metallic thermoelectric materials offer promise in terms of elemental abundance and avoiding rare or toxic elements. Here, we demonstrate that substitution of Co in the Kagome metal Ni3Sn leads to an enhanced Seebeck effect (S max = -55 µV K-1), which supports a promising thermoelectric power factor, PF = 5 mW m-1 K-2 and figure of merit, zT = 0.1. Density Functional Theory calculations show that the metallic electronic structure consists of dispersive bands around the Fermi level (E F) and a combination of flattened out and dispersive bands below it. Boltzmann transport equation modelling sho

Sustainable metallic biomaterials for orthopaedic implants: a comprehensive review of biodegradable and conventional metals.

The selection of biomaterial is crucial for the long-term success of implants. Materials that perform an adequate function and reduce negati … and iron-based alloys have been seen as a good alternative and examined as promising biodegradable metals for implant applications. However, their excessively rapid corrosion (Mg) or extremely slow degradation (Fe) imposes significant limitations on their clinical applicability. In recent times, zinc-based alloys have been seen as new materials that wil …

Antifungal action of metalated and metal-free porphyrins in the photodynamic inactivation of Sporothrix brasiliensis.

The thermodimorphic fungi Sporothrix brasiliensis, a zoophilic pathogen frequents associated to domestic cats, is the most pathogenic species in Sporothrix genus. The increasing resistance of fungal strains to conventional antifungal agents, the prolonged nature and the refractory clinical of treatment underscore the need for alternative therapeutic approaches. Among these, photodynamic inactivation (PDI) has emerged as a promising strategy. PDI involves the combination of a photosensitizing molecule (PS), a light source, and molecular oxygen. Upon irradiation, the PS absorbs photons and under
