SUMMARY: A phaeochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumour derived from the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. Tumours can produce excessive amounts of catecholamines. The presenting symptoms can vary but often include the classic triad of episodic headaches, sweating and palpitations. Due to catecholamine excess, patients can develop cardiomyopathy. Bradycardia and collapse could be the result of sinus node dysfunction or transient dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. Patients with co-existing diabetes can have improvement or resolution of their diabetes after successful adr

CONTEXT: The recent recommendations of the European Endocrine Society states that the performance of computed tomography (CT) to characterize 'true' adrenal incidentalomas (AIs) remains debatable.
OBJECTIVE: To determine relevant thresholds for usual CT parameters for the diagnosis of benign tumors using robust reference standard among a large series of 'true' AIs recruited in an endocrinological setting.
DESIGN: Retrospective study of 253 AIs in 233 consecutive patients explored in a single university hospital: 183 adenomas, 33 pheochromocytomas, 23 adrenocortical carcinomas, 5 other malign

BACKGROUND: Ganglioneuroblastomas, particularly those that produce catecholamine, are extremely rare in adults. Here, we report an interesting surgical case of an adult patient with a catecholamine-producing ganglioneuroblastomas in her adrenal gland, suspected to be a pheochromocytoma, and with a cerebral aneurysm.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 73-year-old woman under treatment for hypertension. During a health check-up, a cystic retroperitoneal tumor was incidentally found in the superior pole of her right kidney. Her blood adrenaline level was slightly elevated, and her urinary adre

INTRODUCTION: In the MEN 2A syndrome, which is the most common of the three types of MEN, three endocrine systems are affected simultaneously or subsequently by the development of tumours manifested by medullary thyroid gland carcinoma, pheochromocytoma (often bilateral) and hyperparathyroidism.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 27 patients from 3 families affected by MEN 2A syndrome were examined clinically (by detecting the effects of catecholamine overproduction), biochemically (screening for metanephrine and normetanephrine in the serum), visualization (CT, MRI, MIBG, PET CT) and some of them also ge

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas of the head and neck are rare vascular tumors derived from the paraganglia tissues originating from the neural crest. They are usually benign and hypervascularized. Diagnosis is relatively easy in condition to consider it in evaluating every lateral neck mass.
METHODS: We made a retrospective study of the records of 10 patients who presented with carotid body tumors at the Department of Vascular surgery of the Military Hospital Avicenne in Marrakech during the period between 2008 and 2013. Epidemiologic, etiologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic features were analyzed.

HYPOTHESIS: Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is an autosomal-dominant disorder characterized by benign and malignant tumors involving the central nervous system, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands, and paraganglia. Appropriate management of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas in VHL is evolving as we better understand the genetics and natural course of the disease and master advanced surgical techniques for adrenalectomy.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: A total of 109 patients identified at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, with VHL (60 males

The concentrations of free and total normetanephrine (NMN) were determined in the plasma of normotensives and patients with primary hypertension and pheochromocytoma. NMN values were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients. Free and conjugated NMN, the latter after acid hydrolysis, were assayed using S-adenosylmethionine in the presence of phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase to form labeled metanephrine. The conjugates of NMN were present in plasma as sulfates principally, as they were also liberated with arylsulfatase. Free and conjugated NMN levels were 117 +/- 10 and 1417 +

Pheochromocytomas are catecholamine-producing tumors presenting with various clinical symptoms, but mostly with headache, sweating, palpitations and hypertension. If not properly diagnosed, secretion of catecholamines may lead to fatal cardiovascular consequences. Biochemical testing for pheochromocytoma should be performed not only in symptomatic subjects or in subjects with adrenal incidentaloma but also in subjects with a genetic predisposition for pheochromocytoma (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1)and mutations of succina

OBJECTIVE: Hypertensive crisis represents a significant intraoperative challenge in pheochromocytoma surgery, often necessitating immediate pharmacologic intervention. To reduce this risk, preoperative α-adrenergic blockade is routinely implemented. Although prior studies have addressed the choice of α-blockade, the impact of its type, treatment duration, and final titrated dose on hypertensive crisis has not yet been established.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 110 patients undergoing laparoscopic adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma. The type of alpha-blocker (doxazosin: DO

Pheochromocytomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla or extra-adrenal paraganglia. Their clinical presentation varies widely among individuals and is primarily linked to the biological effects of excessive catecholamine secretion. We report an unusual case of pheochromocytoma presenting as epigastric heaviness. A 65-year-old male with a known history of type 2 diabetes mellitus, treated with metformin, and well-controlled hypertension managed with amlodipine, presented with a complaint of persistent epigastric heaviness in the absence of associa

BACKGROUND: Temporal bone paragangliomas are complex pathologies presenting close relationships with many critical neurovascular structures. Exclusively, dopamine-secreting paragangliomas are rare and may present a major hemodynamic challenge during intraoperative and postoperative periods, with great blood pressure lability due to the dose-dependent properties of dopamine. However, preoperative α or β blockage is usually not advised. Microsurgical resection is the treatment of choice; nevertheless, these tumors commonly present with greater size at diagnosis due to their non-specific clinical

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder affecting multiple bodily systems that predisposes to the development of tumors. It affects approximately 1 in 3000 newborns in Germany. Its clinical manifestations are diverse and complex, and its diagnostic and therapeutic management call for specialized knowledge and experience. The lack of nationwide guidelines and recommendations further increases the difficulty of establishing an appropriate standardized and interdisciplinary approach.
METHODS: The suggestions presented here are based on a selective literature review,

BACKGROUND Ectopic adrenocortical adenomas are rare and can produce aldosterone autonomously, causing resistant hypertension and hypokalemia. Atypical locations pose diagnostic challenges. This report describes a 45-year-old man with malignant hypertension and hypokalemia due to an aldosterone-producing ectopic adrenal adenoma located between the pancreas and left adrenal gland. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old man with a 9-year history of poorly controlled hypertension presented with dizziness, vomiting, and fatigue. On admission, blood pressure was 192/110 mmHg and serum potassium was 2.07 mmol/L.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Ectopic cosecretion of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in silent (ie, non-catecholamine-secreting) pheochromocytoma is a rare cause of Cushing syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old woman rapidly developed hypercortisolism, clinically manifesting as fatigue, muscle weakness, weight gain, and worsening hypertension and biochemically characterized by hypokalemia and marked increases in the serum cortisol and plasma ACTH levels. This acute presentation suggested a diagnosis of ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS). Imaging studies revealed a

Pheochromocytomas are rare catecholamine-secreting neuroendocrine tumors of the adrenal medulla chromaffin cells, usually associated with features of catecholamine excess. Clinically and biochemically silent pheochromocytoma without adrenergic symptoms or elevated catecholamine concentrations are rare. A 71-year-old female presented with acute right flank pain with abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealing a hemorrhagic right adrenal mass. She had no preceding adrenergic symptoms, and normal serum electrolytes, on a background of well-controlled hypertension on amlodipine monotherapy.
