Randomized efficacy trial of a micronutrient-fortified beverage in primary school children in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Dietary supplements providing physiologic amounts of several micronutrients simultaneously have not been thoroughly tested for combating micronutrient deficiencies. OBJECTIVE: We determined whether a beverage fortified with 10 micronutrients at physiologic doses influenced the iron and vitamin A status and growth of rural children (aged 6-11 y) attending primary schools. DESIGN: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled efficacy trial, children were assigned to receive the fortified beverage or an unfortified beverage at school for 6 mo. RESULTS: There were nonsignifi…

Micronutrient status of primary school girls in rural and urban areas of South Vietnam.

Dietary habits, especially micronutrient intake, and nutritional status of Vietnamese primary school girls were investigated in a cross-sectional survey. We interviewed 284 girls aged 7 to 9 years old, randomly selected from three rural (N=148) and two urban (N=136) primary schools. Dietary data were calculated from the results of 24-h recall interviews over three consecutive days. The dietary micronutrient pattern of the rural group showed deficiency of iron, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, beta-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C. On the contrary, adequate consumption of these eleme

Diet, clothing, sunshine exposure and micronutrient status of Arab infants and young children.

Vitamin C and D levels in Arab women and their newborn infants have been shown to be low. We investigated the prevalence of and risk factors for possible hypovitaminosis C and D in a convenience sample of 51 hospitalized children without clinical features of vitamin C or D deficiency. The mean age was 15.4 months. The serum vitamin C concentration was low in the mothers but normal in the children. Both mothers and children had low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) concentrations. Fifty per cent of the mothers and 22% of the infants and children had hypovitaminosis D (serum 25-OHD level < 25 n

Evaluation of multiple micronutrient supplementation in the management of oral submucous fibrosis in Karachi, Pakistan.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is an oral precancerous condition characterized by symptoms such as intolerance to spicy food, altered salivation, progressive difficulty in opening the mouth, and signs like vesiculation, ulceration, blanching, rigidity, and stiffening of the oral mucosa and depapillation and altered mobility of the tongue. It is seen mostly among people of Indian subcontinent origin. The major structural change is extensive fibroelastic scarring of the lamina propria and deeper connective tissues. A combination of micronutrients (vitamins A, B complex, C, D, and E) and minerals …

Micronutrient Profiles and Anxiety in Adolescents with Non-Structural Palpitations: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Palpitations are common in adolescents and often occur without structural heart disease. Although anxiety and autonomic dysregulation have been implicated, the role of micronutrient status remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between palpitations, micronutrient levels, and anxiety in adolescents and to evaluate the independent associations between selected micronutrients and palpitations using multivariable regression models. Methods: This case-control study included 52 adolescents with palpitations and 52 frequency-matched healthy controls. Structural h…

Micronutrient status among women in the midlife in selected Asian regions: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Micronutrient status is critical for the health and well-being of midlife women during the menopausal transition. However, data on micronutrient intake and status among midlife Asian women remain limited. This review examined the landscape of micronutrient intake, deficiency, and health impact in this population. METHODS: Using a scoping review approach guided by a Population-Concept-Contextframework, we descriptively synthesized evidence from population-level and peer-reviewed data across six Asian regions (India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, and Taiwan). Nutritional intake of micronutrient and macronutrient and type 2 diabetes: machine learning schemes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine system disease, is a common disease involving many patients worldwide. Many studies are performed to evaluate the correlation between micronutrients/macronutrients on diabetes but few of them have a high statistical population and a long follow-up period. We aimed to investigate the relationship between intake of macro/micronutrients and the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) using logistic regression (LR) and a decision tree (DT) algorithm for machine learning. METHOD: Our research explores supervised machine learning models to identify T2D patient…

Review of Current Strategies to Address Micronutrient Deficiencies (MNDs) in Ghana: A Scoping Review.

To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, low-income countries like Ghana will require strategizing towards sustainable reduction in micronutrient deficiency (MND) diseases and MND-related morbidity and mortality. A scoping review was conducted to identify the policy framework around MND intervention, the actors implementing MND-related strategies and documented evidence on which strategies worked across implementation stakeholders. Forty-six peer-reviewed articles were selected (n = 46) including studies on nutrition-sensitive intervention studies (n = 15) and nutrition-specific i

Scaling up antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in Africa: A unified call for action.

Maternal undernutrition in Africa remains a public health challenge, contributing to negative pregnancy outcomes, neonatal mortality, and perpetuating intergenerational cycles of poor health. Antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS), a cost-effective intervention recognized for its potential to improve maternal and neonatal health, reduces risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, small for gestational age, and stillbirth while offering a $37 return for every $1 invested. Despite its benefits, MMS adoption across African countries remains suboptimal. This position paper synthesiz

Micronutrient status 2 years after bariatric surgery: a prospective nutritional assessment.

BACKGROUND: Among commonly performed bariatric surgeries, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS) provides greater weight loss than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG), with sustained metabolic improvements. However, the risk of long-term nutritional deficiencies due to the hypoabsorptive component of BPD-DS hinders its widespread use. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine nutritional status over 2 years after BPD-DS, RYGB or SG. METHODS: Patients were recruited in the REMISSION trial (NCT02390973), a single-center, prospective study. Out of 21
