Microwave ablation treatment for follicular nodular disease in DICER1 syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: DICER1 syndrome, also known as the familial pleuropulmonary blastoma predisposition syndrome, is an autosomal dominant hereditary tumor susceptibility syndrome. Follicular nodular disease (FND) is a benign thyroid condition and represents one of the most common phenotypes of DICER1 syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a female patient with FND in whom DICER1 syndrome was subsequently confirmed. She was successfully treated with ultrasound-guided microwave ablation, and we describe her clinical course in detail. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the importance of considering DIC

Single-Frequency Microwave-Assisted Nanogel-Protein Complexation for Hybrid Biomaterial Fabrication.

The production of nanocarriers for protein delivery with adequate in vivo stability and precise control over protein release faces significant challenges. Microwave hyperthermia, which enables noninvasive and localized thermal regulation, is attracting increasing attention as an externally triggered drug delivery strategy. In the present study, we developed an efficient method for controlling the complexation of polysaccharide nanogels or their cross-linked hydrogels and proteins. Our strategy is to use highly controlled microwave irradiation with precisely regulated frequency and power. We fo

Simplex-anchored regressors for fast global optimization-oriented miniaturization of microwave circuits.

The small physical size of high-frequency components is an essential prerequisite in an increasing number of applications. While size reduction of microwave circuits can be achieved with a suitable choice of architecture, ensuring the best available compromise between electrical parameters and size necessitates meticulous adjustment of all system dimensions. Due to the complexity of electrically small structures, parameter adjustment should be executed globally. Nevertheless, it is an expensive endeavor because it entails a large number of system evaluations executed through electromagnetic (E

Biomimetic Segmented Nanofibrous Structures Enabling Flexible Liquid-Metal Microwave Absorbers.

The rapid advances in detection technologies have raised greater demands on microwave-steady materials, particularly for curved surfaces and movable components of aircraft that are highly susceptible to detection. However, electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers based on composite metastructures or metal-backed resonant cavities often suffer from intrinsic rigidity, resulting in poor conformability to complex surfaces and consequently compromised microwave-absorption performance. Herein, inspired by the locally segmented deformability of soft-bodied organisms, a deformation-adaptive EGaIn/CIP-TPU

Regional Segregated Architecture Strategy for High-Efficiency Microwave Absorption of Polyimide Foam.

Polyimide (PI) microwave absorption (MA) foam characterized by its superior electromagnetic protection performance and adjustable mechanical properties, is considered a quintessential structure-function integrated material. Currently, the expressed low compressive strength (∼kPa) of PI MA foam matrix limits application as a direct load-bearing component, despite potential enhancements through chemical modification and process optimization. Herein, leveraging the higher compressive strength of aramid honeycomb, a foam precursor solution with a more controllable foaming process is integrated int

Energy-Efficient Microwave Heating: Governing Role of the Thermal Profile in Heating Liquid.

Microwave heating is widely used because of its advantages of selective heating, internal heating, high efficiency, and easy controllability. With the proposal of efficient production and high-quality products, the advantages of microwave heating such as high efficiency and fast heating speed are becoming more and more apparent. The results of this article have shown that the optimum energy consumption of the microwave source, i.e., the optimum temperature rise curve of the heated material during the microwave heating process, can be obtained by precise control of the microwave source with the

Can Non-Thermal Microwave Irradiation Inactivate Viruses? A Review with Some Computations.

The use of non-thermal, human-safe electromagnetic (e.m.) waves in the GHz range to inactivate viruses has been proposed by a few groups. It is allegedly based on a transformation of a microwave photon into a phonon, which would produce a so-called Structure Resonance Energy Transfer (SRET) strong enough to break the capsid due to Confined Acoustic Vibration (CAV) at virus-specific frequencies. However, it is well known that e.m. photons' absorption in water or in organic media does not generate single phonons at the same frequency. Rather, it generates many thermal phonons across a wide frequ

Fmoc-Based Assembly of PNA Oligomers: Manual and Microwave-Assisted Automated Synthesis.

PNA-peptide conjugates are explored as potential antisense drugs and as probes in molecular biology, which demands rapid and efficient synthesis protocols that enable isolation of amounts suitable for establishing structure-activity relationships and for in vivo studies in animal disease models. Here, Fmoc/Boc-protected PNA monomers are utilized in the assembly of oligomers via optimized protocols involving either manual synthesis at room temperature or automated microwave-assisted coupling of monomers using a peptide synthesizer.

Isolated Herniation of Gallbladder Through Diaphragmatic Defect Following Hepatic Microwave Ablation.

BACKGROUND: Thermal ablation is commonly used to control metastatic hepatic lesions. The documented overall major complication rate is low (4.1%), with a lower incidence of damage to organs (<0.7%). Diaphragmatic injuries resulting from thermal ablation can cause pain and pleural effusions and, rarely, herniation of intra-abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity. CASE REPORT: We present a case of isolated gallbladder herniation through a diaphragmatic defect after microwave ablation. The patient's complication was corrected surgically with robotic reduction of the herniated gallbladder, cl

The XIAP inhibitor AZD5582 improves the treatment effect of microwave ablation on hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Microwave ablation (MWA) is one of the first-line therapy recommended for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the residual tumor, resulting from insufficient ablation, led to recurrence and metastasis of liver cancer. Novel combination strategies are urgently needed to enhance efficiency of MWA. METHODS: We detected the expression of XIAP protein after ablation in primary liver cancer patients using immunohistochemistry. Then, we established in vitro and in vivo IMWA models to further detect XIAP expression. We established an in vitro IMWA model by hea

Investigating the effects of microwave plasma on bacterial cell structures, viability, and membrane integrity.

Plasma-mediated bacterial inactivation holds great promise but presents several challenges. This study investigates the antibacterial effect of 2.45 GHz non-thermal microwave (MW) plasma on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Salmonella abony (S. abony) suspended in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). A 6-log reduction in both bacterial strains was achieved within 300 s of plasma exposure. The enhanced inactivation is attributed to elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly ·OH (30.30% in S. aureus, 40.13% in S. abony) and H2O2 (173.27% in S. aureus, and 391.84% in S. abony)
