Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Accelerated Biological Aging in Middle-Aged and Elderly Women.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and accelerated biological aging in middle-aged and elderly women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We included parous women with a baseline survey on history of GDM and biological aging biomarkers from the UK Biobank. Information regarding prior GDM was collected via a touchscreen questionnaire and linkage to hospital admission records. Biological aging was evaluated using validated phenotypic age (PhenoAge) based on chronological age and nine biomarkers measured at baseline (2006-2010). Biological aging accelerat

Thoracic spondylodiscitis following acupuncture in an immunocompetent middle-aged male: a case report.

We present the case of a 43-year-old male with progressive thoracic spine pain and bilateral intercostal referral who was ultimately diagnosed with spondylodiscitis. Despite red flag features such as night pain, functional decline, and significant unintentional weight loss, the patient lacked traditional risk factors for spinal infection. He had previously received acupuncture for lumbar radiculopathy, which had since resolved. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed vertebral body involvement and disc space destruction at the T8-T9 level, consistent with spondylodiscitis. The patient underwent su

Successful Surgical Intervention for External Snapping Hip Syndrome in a Middle-Aged Woman.

BACKGROUND: Snapping hip syndrome is a condition characterized by a palpable or audible snap in the hip, particularly during movement. It can be asymptomatic and is categorized into external (lateral) and internal (medial) types. External snapping hip syndrome (ESHS), often due to the iliotibial band (ITB) flipping over the greater trochanter, is more common and usually responds to conservative treatments. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 44-year-old woman who experienced a sensation of hip dislocation and lateral pain in her right hip in the last 3 years which worsened over time. He

Atypical Appendicitis Mimicking Gynecological Pathology: A Diagnostic Challenge in a Middle-Aged Woman.

BACKGROUND Appendicitis is a common surgical emergency, but the diagnosis may remain unclear and challenging, particularly in middle-aged women who present with atypical features. Atypical appendicitis, defined as appendiceal inflammation without classic migratory pain, nausea, or fever; it often mimics gynecological disorders, contributing to diagnostic delays. The present case is unique because it involved an unusually prolonged 2-month history of persistent suprapubic pain before acute exacerbation. Such a chronic course preceding the acute phase is uncommon and further complicated the diag

Non-linear association between tooth loss and cardiovascular diseases among middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: Although positive associations between fewer remaining teeth and an increased risk of various systemic diseases have been reported, the precise dose-response relationship has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the non-linearity of the dose-response association between the number of lost teeth and the risk of cardiovascular diseases among middle-aged adults. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study, with over 5 years of follow-up, was based on medical claims and health check-up data. Participants were adults aged 40-64 in Japan. The outcome was the incidence of

17α-Estradiol Confers Limited Protection Against APOE4 Phenotypes in Middle-Aged Female Mice.

Longevity-promoting interventions represent a promising strategy to mitigate brain aging and reduce Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. The NIA Interventions Testing Program identified the weak estrogen 17α-estradiol (17αE2) as a compound that extends healthspan and lifespan in mice, with effects observed primarily in males. Our recent work demonstrated that 17αE2 healthspan benefits were modulated by human apolipoprotein E ( APOE ) genotype such that aging phenotypes were improved more strongly in middle-aged male mice with targeted-replacement of the AD-associated APOE4 allele compared to APOE3 ,

Dissecting a Diagnostic Enigma, Multiple Bilateral Facial Nodules in a Middle Aged Woman.

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma is a rare autosomal-dominant tumor predisposition syndrome that is caused by a germline defect in fumarate hydratase. We report a case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with multiple bilateral facial nodules arranged in a zosteriform pattern that increased in distribution over 15 years. The patient reported slight pain with eating spicy food and similar lesions in her younger sister. Biopsy was performed, and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pilar leiomyoma. An immunohistochemical study showed loss of fumarate hydrat

12 weeks of voluntary wheel running restores glucagon sensitivity in middle-aged mice.

UNLABELLED: Aerobic exercise training is a potent intervention for the treatment and prevention of age-related metabolic disease, which is characterized by both insulin and glucagon resistance. While insulin resistance is a key driver of metabolic disease in aging, glucagon signaling is equally critical in maintaining both glucose and lipid homeostasis, particularly during exercise. Previous studies have established the glucagon sensitizing effects of exercise training in younger animals. Most studies in rodents employ rigorous and carefully dosed forced exercise protocols. This forced exercis

Tooth pain accompanying cluster headache in a middle-aged female: A case report.

Some orofacial pains (OFP) resemble primary headache disorders, but involve the trigeminal nerve V2 or V3 dermatome. The International Classification of Orofacial Pain (ICOP) distinguishes three types of such OFPs: Type 1 (facial pain in addition to headaches), Type 2 (facial pain replacing a previous primary headache), and Type 3 (OFP similar to primary headaches, without a history of headaches). This report describes a 46-year-old female patient with a chief complaint of toothache and severe pain radiating to the left orbital region, and with accompanying autonomic signs and symptoms. The pa

Community acquired Pseudomonas meningoencephalitis in a middle-aged diabetic woman: A case report.

Pseudomonas species are environmental Gram-negative bacteria recognized for their potential to cause opportunistic infections, particularly among immunocompromised patients and those with a history of surgical procedures. Community-acquired meningoencephalitis resulting from Pseudomonas infection is rare but poses a significant risk of mortality. This case describes an unusual instance of primary Pseudomonas meningoencephalitis in a patient with diabetes mellitus, highlighting the necessity of early recognition and timely management.

Beyond Ulcerations: A Case of Cutaneous Polyarteritis Nodosa in a Middle-Aged Woman.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is an immune-mediated necrotizing vasculitis predominantly affecting medium-sized arteries, often manifesting with systemic involvement in its classic form. However, a cutaneous variant (cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (c-PAN)) confines the disease process to the skin and subcutaneous tissues, typically presenting with painful nodules, chronic ulcerations, and livedo reticularis while sparing major organ systems. Here, we describe a 53-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes and hypertension who developed persistent, painful ulcerative nodules on her lower legs over six m

A Case of Infectious Mononucleosis With Peritonsillar Abscess in a Middle-Aged Patient.

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is common among young adults but often presents with nonspecific symptoms in middle-aged and older individuals. Cases of IM complicated by peritonsillar abscess (PTA) are uncommon. We report the case of a 41-year-old woman who presented to a local clinic with a sore throat and was initially diagnosed with acute tonsillitis. She was referred to our department after unsuccessful antibiotic and steroid therapy. Because of progressive difficulty with oral intake and laryngeal edema observed on flexible laryngoscopy, she was admitted for close monitoring and supportive
