The efficacy of various formulations of ivermectin administered at the recommended dose rate of 200 micrograms/kg was evaluated in cattle infested with mange mites (Sarcoptes scabiei var. bovis.), lice (Linognathus vituli and Damalinia bovis) and ticks (Boophilus decoloratus, Amblyomma hebraeum, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Hyalomma spp.) in 8 trials conducted in South Africa. Mange mites (S. scabiei) were eliminated from animals treated subcutaneously, resulting in marked clinical recovery. Oral administration reduced the numbers of, but did not eliminate these mites. Sucking lice (L. vit

Tinea faciei (TF) is a common dermatomicrobiological condition caused by dermatophytes involving the skin of the face but not the mustache and beard (Tinea barbae). It poses a diagnostic dilemma with its atypical clinical presentation. Pityriasis folliculorum (PF) is a dermatological condition that results in rosacea-like skin eruptions. It was previously associated with a human ectoparasitic infestation. Demodex mites (Demodex folliculorum) is a group of obligate parasites that live on the skin of mammals. These mites have been associated with various dermatological disorders, clinically term

The combination of Deformed wing virus (DWV) and Varroa destructor is arguably one of the greatest threats currently facing western honey bees, Apis mellifera. Varroa's association with DWV has decreased viral diversity and increased loads of DWV within honey bee populations. Nowhere has this been better studied than in Hawaii, where the arrival of Varroa progressively led to the dominance of the single master variant (DWV-A) on both mite-infested Hawaiian Islands of Oahu and Big Island. Now, exactly 10 years following the original study, we find that the DWV population has changed once a

Propetamphos is a new organophosphorous compound with broad spectrum acaricidal and insecticidal activity. Dip wash concentrations of 100 to 200 ppm protect sheep against field challenge for approximately 10 weeks for blowflies, 16 weeks for lice and keds and six weeks for ticks. During laboratory and field trial studies a wash concentration of 125 ppm propetamphos eradicated sheep scab and protected from reinfestation for over four weeks.

BACKGROUND: Two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the most important plant pests in the world. Due to increased resistance of mites to acaricides, it is necessary to use other methods such as inducing resistance in plants by natural compounds for pests' management. Polyamins such as spermine are effective in increasing plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors. In this research, the effect of spermine treatments in cucumber plants on life table parameters of T. urticae was investigated. Also, top-down effect of spermine and T. urticae on cucumber

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing sarcoptic mange in dogs can be challenging because the clinical signs overlap with those of other pruritic conditions. Entodermoscopy has emerged as a promising technique for the rapid confirmation of suspected scabies mite infestation.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the dermoscopic features of sarcoptic mange in a dog.
ANIMALS: A dog with sarcoptic mange was examined via dermoscopy after skin scraping confirmation.
RESULTS: Distinctive dermoscopic features included: the mite-gallery unit (MGU) and specific mite structures, such as characteristic 'Δ'-shaped gnathosomes, eggs

AIM: The comparison of the diagnostic efficiency of a reference method (light microscopy [LM] using 10% potassium hydroxide [KOH]) with the use of 100% alcohol to in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) for the detection of Demodex eyelid infestation in seborrheic blepharitis patients.
METHODS: Eyelashes were epilated from the right eyes for the reference method and the left eyes for the alcohol group in 58 eyes of 29 patients. IVCM was used on the left eyes. The primary outcomes were the number of Demodex mites per lash and the rate of Demodex positivity (≥1 mite).
RESULTS: The rate of Demodex p

OBJECTIVE: Ornithonyssus sylviarum (northern fowl mite) and Menacanthus stramineus (chicken body louse) are key poultry pests currently controlled by exclusion or pesticide application. We studied how host beak condition affected their populations over time and how the lice and mites might interact on a host.
METHODS: Beak-trimmed or beak-intact white leghorn hens were infested initially with either mites or lice and subsequently challenged using the alternate ectoparasite species (reciprocal transfer), while other hens harboured only the initial ectoparasite species.
RESULTS: Beak-trimmed h

We analysed data on the abundance and distribution of 26 species of mesostigmate mites with different feeding habits collected from bodies of small mammalian hosts in 2 geographical regions (West Siberia and Argentina). We tested whether prevalence of a mite can be reliably predicted from a simple epidemiological model that takes into account mean abundance and its variance. We theorized that the difference between prevalence predicted from the model and observed prevalence would be smallest in obligatory haematophagous mites, intermediate in facultatively haematophagous mites and greatest in

Sarcoptic mange is a skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei infestations, characterized by dermatitis, pruritus, and exudative responses in both humans and animals. Biologically, the life cycle of S. scabiei is confined to the host's skin (stratum corneum), where mite-derived molecules trigger the influx of innate immune cells, including polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), which play a central role in skin inflammatory responses. The antimicrobial activity of PMNs is regulated by Ca2+ fluxes and includes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), degranulation, and the release of neut

The mites of the family Pyemotidae Berlese (1897) are a large family of ectoparasitoids arthropods, known as pathogen for humans since the 18th century and responsible for the so-called "straw itch" or "grain itch" in granary and dock workers. The identified species of the genus Pyemotes are divided into two groups: the scolyti group (P. scolyti, P. parviscolyti and P. dimorphus) and the ventricosus group (P. tritici and P. ventricosus). The first group is characterized by nonvenomous mites usually parasitizing bark beetles; the ventricosus group includes species associated with a large number

A distinctive nodular dermatitis induced by Straelensia cynotis, a newly described trombidioid larval mite which resides in hair follicles, was identified in 12 dogs living in France. They all had scattered, small (1 to 3 mm in diameter), pale, firm skin nodules, variable in distribution but always affecting the dorsal regions of the head and trunk; they were distributed over the whole body of seven of the dogs. The animals were otherwise healthy except for three severely infested fox terriers which had a decreased appetite, were lethargic, and whose skin nodules were painful to the touch. The

Hair-follicle mites are the only metazoan organism commonly found in the pilosebaceous components of the eyelid of man. Our study showed that Demodex folliculorum in all stages is found in the small hair follicles and the eyelash hair follicles. This species, in adult and immature forms, consumes epithelial cells, produces follicular distension and hyperplasia, and increases keratinization leading, in eyelashes, to cuffing consisting of keratin and lipid moieties. Demodex brevis (in all stages) is present in the eyelash sebaceous glands, small hair sebaceous glands, and in the lobules of the m

The paradigm for all toxicological bioassays in the risk assessment of pesticide registration reflects the principle that experimental conditions should be controlled to avoid any other factors that may affect the endpoint measures. As honeybee colonies can be frequently exposed to bio-aggressors in real conditions, often concomitantly with pesticides, co-exposure to pesticide/bio-aggressors is becoming a concern for regulatory authorities. We investigated the effects of the neonicotinoid insecticide thiamethoxam on the homing performances of foragers emerging from colonies differentiated by h

cDNAs encoding the immunodominant allergens tropomyosin and paramyosin were amplified from RNA extracted from the sheep scab mite Psoroptes ovis. The tropomyosin cDNA contained an open reading frame (ORF) of 852 bp which encoded a predicted protein with 98% and 97% identity to the house dust mite allergens Der f 10 and Der p 10 respectively. The complete paramyosin ORF generated by RT-PCR was 2625 bp in length and encoded an 875aa predicted protein of 102.6 kDa with 97%, 95% and 89% identity to the paramyosins of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p 11), Sarcoptes scabiei and Blomia tropicali

Demodex mites are common commensals of the pilosebaceous unit in mammals. In humans, only two species (Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis) have been identified and have been implied to play a role in at least three facial conditions: pityriasis folliculorum, rosacea-like demodicidosis and so-called "demodicidosis gravis". However, there is no consensus to what degree the mites are causative of the skin pathology and how they might contribute to the disease. This review presents a demodicidosis case, discusses the clinical features of Demodex infestation in man and reviews its pathogenetic impl

Scabies is an intensely pruritic disorder induced by a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction to infestation of the skin by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The diagnosis of scabies is established clinically and confirmed by identifying mites or eggs by microscopic examination of scrapings from the skin or by surface microscopy using a dermatoscope. Reflectance-mode confocal microscopy is a novel technique used for noninvasive imaging of skin structures and lesions at a resolution compatible to that of conventional histology. Recently, the technique was employed for the confirmation of the clinical
