Obesity, functional mobility and quality of life.

Obesity is a health condition that, through a complex interaction of biopsychosocial and environmental factors, is associated with mobility disability. The mobility disability experienced by persons with obesity is associated with reduced health related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to persons without obesity. This paper will review and discuss functional mobility and its relationship to HRQoL for persons living with obesity. This will be done by conducting a review of the literature in the area of obesity and functional mobility and it's association with HRQoL. Recommendations to address t

What's in a name revisited: should osteoporosis and sarcopenia be considered components of "dysmobility syndrome?".

Sarcopenia and osteoporosis are age-related declines in the quantity and quality of muscle and bone respectively, with shared pathogeneses and adverse health consequences. Both absolute and relative fat excess, i.e., obesity and sarcopenic obesity, contribute to disability, falls, and fractures. Rather than focusing on a single component, i.e., osteoporosis, sarcopenia, or obesity, we realized that an opportunity exists to combine clinical factors, thereby potentially allowing improved identification of older adults at risk for disability, falls, and fractures. Such a combination could be term

Inclusive design in the implementation of projects for schools modernization in Portugal - case studies.

The Project for Schools Modernization taking place in Portugal, with an estimated total investment of 2450 million for the intervention in the first 205 schools, provide the reclassification of 332 secondary schools by 2015. One of the questions we can pose is if the authorities and the teams of architects selected to design these schools considered fundamental for the correctness of architectural barriers within the school and its accessibility the implementation of standards and principles of inclusion of children/teenagers with special needs within their school environment. As most of the p

ZeroG: overground gait and balance training system.

A new overground body-weight support system called ZeroG has been developed that allows patients with severe gait impairments to practice gait and balance activities in a safe, controlled manner. The unloading system is capable of providing up to 300 lb of static support and 150 lb of dynamic (or constant force) support using a custom-series elastic actuator. The unloading system is mounted to a driven trolley, which rides along an overhead rail. We evaluated the performance of ZeroG's unloading system, as well as the trolley tracking system, using benchtop and human-subject testing. Average r

Nutritional determinants of mobility.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many countries, persons over 65 are one of the fastest growing segments of the population. Mobility disability is one of the major risk factors for morbidity and mortality in this age group. There is increasing evidence that improved nutrition can reduce the risk of developing disability in older age. This review summarizes the recent literature showing the associations between different nutrients and mobility-related outcomes in older adults. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies suggested an association between low intake and low serum concentrations of micronutrients, such

[Scales and tests in the rehabilitation and treatment of patients with spasticity of the lower limbs].

The problem-oriented approach in the rehabilitation of patients with spasticity requires careful assessment of the situation in the concept of The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF): impairment of the structure, functions and limitation of activity in specific environmental factors. Standardized tools in the assessment of muscle tone allow to get objective data about motor function. The use of the Modified Ashworth scale (MAS) and the Tardieu Scale are discussed. The standardized assessment of independent mobility is an important issue in outcome measuring

Schwannomas of the orbit.

The authors describe a case of intraorbital schwannoma. The tumour caused exophthalmos of 11 mm, and displacement with limitation of mobility of the eyeball. A review of cases from other studies is presented. This rare tumour orginates from the fifth cranial nerve. Exophthalmos is the primary clinical symptom. The value of several radiological examination techniques and possible surgical approaches are discussed.

Analysis of the hypoxia-induced ADH2 promoter of the respiratory yeast Pichia stipitis reveals a new mechanism for sensing of oxygen limitation in yeast.

We introduced a reporter gene system into Pichia stipitis using the gene for the artificial green fluorescent protein (GFP), variant yEGFP. This system was used to analyse hypoxia-dependent PsADH2 regulation. Reporter gene activity was only found under oxygen limitation on a fermentable carbon source. The promoter was not induced by oxygen limitation in the Crabtree-positive yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Promoter deletions revealed that a region of 15 bp contained the essential site for hypoxic induction. This motif was different from the known hypoxia response elements of S. cerevisiae but

Age-Related Trajectories of General Fluid Cognition and Functional Decline in the Health and Retirement Study: A Bivariate Latent Growth Analysis.

There have been few studies on associations between age-related declines in fluid cognition and functional ability in population-representative samples of middle-aged and older adults. We used a two-stage process (longitudinal factor analysis followed by structural growth modeling) to estimate bivariate trajectories of age-related changes in general fluid cognition (numeracy, category fluency, executive functioning, and recall memory) and functional limitation (difficulties in daily activities, instrumental activities, and mobility). Data came from the Health and Retirement Study (Waves 2010-2

Review of Current Technologies in Pediatric Mobility and Standing Devices.

Every child has the right to grow, develop, play, and learn within an environment that maximizes their highest functional potential. This article explores current technologies and considerations for pediatric mobility and positioning. Contemporary concepts within the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health are discussed to support optimal function and participation across home, school, and community settings for children who have mobility delays or restrictions. Individualized self-initiated mobility and positioning options are urgently needed to provide children wh

Association of travel time, patient characteristics, and hospital quality with patient mobility for breast cancer surgery: A national population-based study.

BACKGROUND: This national study investigated hospital quality and patient factors associated with treatment location for breast cancer surgery. METHODS: By using linked administrative data sets from the English National Health Service, the authors identified all women diagnosed between January 2, 2016, and December 31, 2018, who underwent breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or a mastectomy with or without immediate breast reconstruction. The extent to which patients bypassed their nearest hospital was investigated using a geographic information system (ArcGIS). Conditional logistic regressions we
