Copula modeling for the estimation of measures of marker classification and predictiveness performance with survival outcomes.

The discriminative and predictive power of a continuous-valued marker for survival outcomes can be summarized using the receiver operating characteristic and predictiveness curves, respectively. In this paper, fully parametric and semi-parametric copula-based constructions of the joint model of the marker and the survival time are developed for characterizing, plotting, and analyzing both curves along with other underlying performance measures. The formulations require a copula function, a parametric specification for the margin of the marker, and either a parametric distribution or a non-para

On interquantile smoothness of censored quantile regression with induced smoothing.

Quantile regression has emerged as a useful and effective tool in modeling survival data, especially for cases where noises demonstrate heterogeneity. Despite recent advancements, non-smooth components involved in censored quantile regression estimators may often yield numerically unstable results, which, in turn, lead to potentially self-contradicting conclusions. We propose an estimating equation-based approach to obtain consistent estimators of the regression coefficients of interest via the induced smoothing technique to circumvent the difficulty. Our proposed estimator can be shown to be

Brief Alcohol Interventions are Effective through 6 Months: Findings from Marginalized Zero-inflated Poisson and Negative Binomial Models in a Two-step IPD Meta-analysis.

To evaluate and optimize brief alcohol interventions (BAIs), it is critical to have a credible overall effect size estimate as a benchmark. Estimating such an effect size has been challenging because alcohol outcomes often represent responses from a mixture of individuals: those at high risk for alcohol misuse, occasional nondrinkers, and abstainers. Moreover, some BAIs exclusively focus on heavy drinkers, whereas others take a universal prevention approach. Depending on sample characteristics, the outcome distribution might have many zeros or very few zeros and overdispersion; consequently, t

Time Series Modelling of Syphilis Incidence in China from 2005 to 2012.

BACKGROUND: The infection rate of syphilis in China has increased dramatically in recent decades, becoming a serious public health concern. Early prediction of syphilis is therefore of great importance for heath planning and management. METHODS: In this paper, we analyzed surveillance time series data for primary, secondary, tertiary, congenital and latent syphilis in mainland China from 2005 to 2012. Seasonality and long-term trend were explored with decomposition methods. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) was used to fit a univariate time series model of syphilis incidence. A

Verification of the Overestimation of the "Deaths Associated with Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919, Japan" Claimed in a Demographic Study.

Official records show that the Japanese influenza death toll in 1918-1920 was 385 thousand. However, a recently published study claims that the records are skeptical, claiming the figure to be "an anomaly by Asian standard," and re-estimated the number to be about 2 million by its unique demographical calculation. However, it is not sound from the following socio-historical and statistical perspectives: i) Japan had developed accurate registration and surveillance systems which might not have existed in other developing countries; ii) there were unique socio-economic situations that claim that

Pink-noise behaviour of biosystems.

Pink (1/f) noise is one of the most common behaviours of biosystems. Our present paper is devoted to clarify the origin of this interesting phenomenon. It is shown that the stationary random stochastic processes under self-similar conditions (as we have in living objects) generate pink noise independently of the kind and number of variables.

Extensively Corrected Score Approach for Proportional Odds Mixture Cure Model for Survival Data with Mismeasured Covariates.

The cure model extends standard survival models to analyze survival data with a cure or nonsusceptible fraction. Numerous methods have been developed to infer such data using the mixture cure model, which separately models and interprets the cure rate and the failure time of uncured subjects. Most of these methods assume that all covariates are measured precisely. Cure models that account for mismeasured covariates are scarce in the literature, largely due to the challenges they pose for estimation, inference, and asymptotic theory. This article considers a logistic-proportional odds mixture c

When models choose metrics: Hidden geometry in computational biology.

Computational biology often turns biological measurements into fitted models, embeddings, or summaries and then compares them with a distance chosen largely by convention. That choice can shape the scientific question being answered, because different distances emphasize different assumptions about noise, variation, and biological similarity. This Perspective describes the hidden geometry that can arise when a probabilistic model is specified carefully enough to support local metric structure. For regular parametric models, the Fisher information defines a natural local metric, making distance

Leveraging probabilistic forecasts for dengue preparedness and control: The 2024 Dengue Forecasting Sprint in Brazil.

Forecast models are a key decision-support tool for public health authorities in managing epidemics, feeding into early warning systems, scenario evaluations, and an empirical basis for resource allocation. In Brazil, improving dengue forecasting became a priority in response to the unprecedented increase in cases, which surpassed the total of the previous decade and expanded to new regions. The Infodengue-Mosqlimate consortium launched the Infodengue-Mosqlimate Dengue Challenge 2024 (IMDC24), or Dengue Forecast Sprint, bringing together six international teams provided with cases and climate

Modelling wound area in studies of wound healing interventions.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies of wound healing often use survival analysis and time to event outcomes or differences in wound area at a specific time point. However, these methods do not use a potentially large number of observations made over the course of a trial and may be inefficient. A model-based approach can leverage all trial data, but there is little guidance on appropriate models and functional forms to describe wound healing. METHODS: We derive a general statistical model and review a wide range of plausible mathematical models to describe wound healing. We identify a range of p

Evaluating the effectiveness of self-attention mechanism in tuberculosis time series forecasting.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing impact of tuberculosis on public health, accurately predicting future tuberculosis cases is crucial for optimizing of health resources and medical service allocation. This study applies a self-attention mechanism to predict the number of tuberculosis cases, aiming to evaluate its effectiveness in forecasting. METHODS: Monthly tuberculosis case data from Changde City between 2010 and 2021 were used to construct a self-attention model, a long short-term memory (LSTM) model, and an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. The performance of these mo

Analytical-stochastic model of motor difficulty for three-dimensional manipulation tasks.

Multiple models exist for the evaluation of human motor performance; some of these rely on the Index of Difficulty (ID), a measure to evaluate the difficulty associated to simple reaching tasks. Despite the numerous applications of the ID in reaching movements, the existing formulations are functions of the geometrical features of the task and do not consider the motor behaviour of subjects performing repetitive movements in interaction with the environment. Variability of movements, length of trajectories, subject-specific strength and skill, and required interaction with the environment are

Time-series analyses of air pollution and mortality in the United States: a subsampling approach.

BACKGROUND: Hierarchical Bayesian methods have been used in previous papers to estimate national mean effects of air pollutants on daily deaths in time-series analyses. OBJECTIVES: We obtained maximum likelihood estimates of the common national effects of the criteria pollutants on mortality based on time-series data from ≤ 108 metropolitan areas in the United States. METHODS: We used a subsampling bootstrap procedure to obtain the maximum likelihood estimates and confidence bounds for common national effects of the criteria pollutants, as measured by the percentage increase in daily mortali

Principal quantile treatment effect estimation using principal scores.

Intercurrent events and estimands play a key role in defining the treatment effects of interest precisely. Sometimes the median or other quantiles of outcomes in a principal stratum according to potential occurrence of intercurrent events are of interest in randomized clinical trials. Naïve analyses such as those based on the observed occurrence of the intercurrent events lead to biased results. Therefore, we propose principal quantile treatment effect estimators that can nonparametrically estimate the distribution of potential outcomes by principal score weighting without relying on the exclu

Extending Multiple Testing With Unknown Test Dependency via the CoCo Test: With Applications to Cancer Studies.

Multiple testing issues are common in clinical and scientific research, particularly in clinical trials involving multple endpoints. The central challenge lies in controlling the type I error rate ( α $$ \alpha $$ -control). The behavior of multiple testing procedures for α $$ \alpha $$ -control when the tests are independent or dependent but with a known joint distribution is relatively well known. When the joint distribution of test statistics is unknown, one can still guarantee the α $$ \alpha $$ -control, if the positive dependency through stochastic ordering (PDS) condition is satis

A flexible class of parametric transition regression models based on copulas: application to poliomyelitis incidence.

This paper presents an extension of a general parametric class of transitional models of order p. In these models, the conditional distribution of the current observation, given the present and past history, is a mixture of conditional distributions, each of them corresponding to the current observation, given each one of the p-lagged observations. Such conditional distributions are constructed using bivariate copula models which allow for a rich range of dependence suitable to model non-Gaussian time series. Fixed and time varying covariates can be included in the models. These models have th

Analyzing repeated measures semi-continuous data, with application to an alcohol dependence study.

Two-part random effects models (Olsen and Schafer,(1) Tooze et al.(2)) have been applied to repeated measures of semi-continuous data, characterized by a mixture of a substantial proportion of zero values and a skewed distribution of positive values. In the original formulation of this model, the natural logarithm of the positive values is assumed to follow a normal distribution with a constant variance parameter. In this article, we review and consider three extensions of this model, allowing the positive values to follow (a) a generalized gamma distribution, (b) a log-skew-normal distributio

Modelling population heterogeneity in sensitivity and specificity of a multi-stage screen for obstructive sleep apnoea.

We propose a model-based approach for modelling population heterogeneity in terms of sensitivity and specificity of multi-stage screening procedures that consists of multiple tests ordered according to criteria such as cost and invasiveness. It is assumed that a patient proceeds to the next test only if they test positive for the current test. An overall positive result occurs if a patient tests positive for all tests. A dropout occurs when a subject tests positive for a test but does not proceed to subsequent tests. Chinchilli proposed estimates of sensitivity and specificity based upon ratio

An Augmented Approach for Regression Analysis of Case-Cohort Interval-Censored Failure Time Data.

The case-cohort design is a valuable two-phase sampling scheme often used in situations with low disease incidence and challenges in obtaining covariate data due to cost constraints, and many methods have been proposed for its analysis. However, most of the existing approaches, particularly for interval-censored data, ignore the presence of non-expensive covariates that are typically observed for the entire cohort and thus can result in the significant loss of efficiency. To address this, under the framework of the semi-parametric transformation hazards model, we propose a supersampling approa
