The three-dimensional structure of native SHL-I, a lectin from the venom of the Chinese bird spider Selenocosmia huwena, has been determined from two-dimensional 1H NMR spectroscopy recorded at 500 and 600 MHz. Naltrexone-derived antagonists which are highly selective for delta opioid receptors have been designed using the message-address concept. The prototypical member of this series, naltrindole 1, possesses very high affinity and selectivity for delta receptors, and a closely related benzofuran analogue, NTB 2, is a selective delta 2 antagonist. The fact that 7-benzylidenenaltrexone (BNTX) was found to be a delta 1 antagonist suggests that the conformation of the putative delta address component (phenyl group) of BNTX plays a role in modulating delta subtype selectivity.

NAF/NAP-1 is a novel tissue-derived chemotactic peptide. It consists of 72 amino acids and has no sequence homology to known cytokines. NAF/NAP-1 is produced by a wide variety of cells after stimulation with interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor or endotoxin, and has the properties of a local mediator of neutrophil recruitment into diseased tissues. There are indications that NAF/NAP-1 is important in the pathophysiology of inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, asbestosis, adult respiratory distress syndrome and different forms of arthritis.

mRNA isolated from mumps virus-infected Vero cells was converted into cDNA and cloned into the PstI site of the plasmid pBR322. We report the cloning and sequence analysis of Cerastes vipera and Macrovipera lebetina transmediterranea cDNAs coding for short non-RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) disintegrins and for dimeric disintegrin subunits.
