The success of science and medical technology has led to medical brinkmanship, pushing aggressive treatment as far as it can go. But medicine lacks the precision necessary for such brinkmanship to succeed, and the resulting cycle of expectation and disappointment in technology has, in part, led to an increasing acceptance of euthanasia and assisted suicide, linked closely with advocacy for patient autonomy. At the opposite extreme lies medical vitalism, which refers to attempts to preserve the patient's life in and of itself without any significant hope for recovery. The Catholic moral traditi

Within the scope of a follow-up examination, the speech development of 2 different groups of children with trisomy 21 was compared. The patient group (n = 20) was treated with a Castillo-Morales stimulating plate in early childhood (average treatment time = 10.8 months, average age at follow-up examination: 55 months). The control group (average age 47.4 months) comprised 18 children with Down's syndrome who had ceased stimulating plate treatment after one month or had received no treatment because, although treatment proved in retrospect to be indicated, parents were not adequately informed. …

Investigating how different stakeholders evaluate traffic situations is essential for aligning autonomous vehicle (AV) decision-making with common-sense moral expectations. Yet, empirical studies on traffic moral judgment remain limited and almost exclusively focused on dramatic high-stakes situations. To address this gap, this paper presents two studies testing moral judgment in low-stakes ordinary traffic simulations. Drawing on the ADC model of moral judgment, both studies systematically manipulated key moral features: the character of the driver (Agent), adherence to traffic rules (Deed),

BACKGROUND: Moral disengagement is a psychological mechanism through which individuals justify ethically compromised behavior. Understanding the experiences of nursing faculty involved in moral disengagement is essential for maintaining educational integrity and ensuring the development of ethically grounded future nurses.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of nursing faculty regarding moral disengagement and to examine how nursing faculty experienced moral disengagement as a cognitive strategy used to rationalize compromises in both academic and clinic

INTRODUCTION: School nurses play a critical role in supporting student health but faced unprecedented burdens during the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased workloads, rapidly changing guidelines, and heightened risk of exposure. These pressures contributed to burnout and moral distress (MD) threatening workforce stability. This study aimed to quantify burnout among school nurses during the pandemic and examine its relationship with moral distress.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, mixed-methods survey was administered in December 2022 to school nurses in a large, diverse region of California. T

OBJECTIVE: Moral injury correlates significantly with posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide, affecting soldiers' combat effectiveness and well-being. Despite growing awareness, it is an emerging research area, mainly studied in Western military cohorts. In China, research on its mechanisms and influencing factors in the unique social-cultural context is scarce. Retired college soldiers are crucial, being high-quality military reserves and national defense educators. Their moral injury during service impacts postretirement adaptation and college conscription. Thus, exploring th

Research on sexualised drug use often emphasises adverse health outcomes and risk management with limited exploration of the social and ethical dimensions of moral agency and harm reduction practices. This study examined the interplay between moral agency, empathy, and stigma. Participants (age >18 years and California residents) who engaged in drug use during sex within the past six months, excluding alcohol-only use, were recruited through mobile hook-up apps, websites, and snowball sampling. Eighteen semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with predominantly cisgender gay male pa

Background: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, yet the mechanisms linking early adversity to later vulnerability during traumatic events remain unclear. Betrayal-related moral injury (MI-betrayal) - the perception that trusted others or institutions have violated core moral expectations - has been proposed as one such mechanism. Since CM often involves betrayal, it may heighten sensitivity to later violations of trust, particularly during collective trauma in the context of war, when large-scale security breakdowns ma

INTRODUCTION: About 20% of police calls involve a person experiencing a behavioral health crisis. To better address these community member's needs and reduce risk of harm, jurisdictions are developing programs that shift calls for crises related to homelessness, addiction, and mental health to non-law enforcement alternatives. In responding to these calls, first responders working in these alternative response programs are exposed to a different set of moral dilemmas and pressures, increasing their risk of developing moral injury.
METHODS: The Alternative Response Program Moral Injury and Bur

BACKGROUND: Infanticide, defined as the killing of a child under 1 year of age by their mother, is a rare and complex offence. In Canada and many other jurisdictions, infanticide is a gender-specific legal offence that can only be committed by women. The phenomenon is shaped by strongly gendered social and legal attitudes that influence perceptions of women convicted of infanticide.
AIM: To examine forensic psychiatric nurses' perspectives on the moral subjectivities of mothers convicted of infanticide.
METHODS: A critical discourse analysis, informed by feminist and poststructuralist theory

Human cloning involves creating a genetically identical copy of a human cell, tissue, or embryo. That is, human reproductive cloning, producing a genetic copy of an existing person, has never been successfully done and remains globally banned or restricted. While there is no scientific evidence of successful human reproductive cloning, biotechnology combines cloning methods with genetic engineering to drive advancements in medical research and disease treatment. With the development of genetic engineering and cloning technologies, human cloning, as a possible future phenomenon, has sparked ext

BACKGROUND: Morally challenging situations arise frequently in contemporary pediatric practice. Despite this, few pediatric studies have examined how to support residents navigating these experiences or measure growth in this domain. To address this gap, we developed and piloted a longitudinal, multimodal curriculum designed to prepare residents to recognize and respond to moral challenges.
METHODS: Curriculum development followed Kern's six-step model and was informed by a previously published needs assessment and review of existing literature. A mixed-methods design evaluated the interventi

Human beings possess a distinctive psychological capacity to anticipate their own mortality and to interpret suffering within broader frameworks of meaning. This capacity gives rise to existential anxiety, particularly in contexts of illness, aging, loss, and uncertainty. While existential anxiety has been widely examined in philosophy and psychology, comparatively less attention has been given to the interpretive frameworks through which individuals explain suffering in clinical settings and to the biological consequences of those interpretations. This conceptual paper introduces the Randomne

Recent research suggests that incidental affect, including odor-elicited emotion, can shape moral judgment in adults. However, little is known about how this influence develops across early childhood. The present research examined whether pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant odors modulate moral evaluations of care and purity violations in adults and preschool-aged children. In Study 1, 36 undergraduates completed a within-subjects task under three odor conditions. In Study 2, 93 children aged 3 to 6 years completed a developmentally adapted version of the same task. Among adults, odor effects we

BACKGROUND: Nursing interns play a dual role in clinical practice, acting as both potential risks to and defenders of patient safety. Although moral sensitivity is recognized as a foundational element for patient safety, the specific mechanism translating it into actual safety competency, particularly the mediating role of ethical action, remains underexplored.
AIM: To examine the mediating effect of ethical action on the relationship between moral sensitivity and patient safety competency among nursing interns.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was reported following the Strengthening the Re

In a 1996 national survey, nephrology registered nurses believed that 15.0% of patients aged 65 years and older should not be dialyzed. In 2025, we replicated the survey and additionally asked nephrology nurses to rate their moral distress using the Moral Distress Thermometer (MDT). The 315 respondents believed that 19.4% of patients aged 65 years and older should not be dialyzed; 100 nurses (31.7% of respondents) reported high moral distress (MDT 6 or higher) and that 26.7% of older patients should not be dialyzed. In comparison, 215 nurses (68.3%) reported low moral distress (26.7% vs. 16.0%

When people disagree about deeply held moral convictions, conflicts can seem inevitable. This paper proposes that conflicts can be avoided, and respectful exchanges can follow, if people perceive stances they disagree with as morally reasonable: arrived at through good-faith deliberation. Reasonableness, central to law and philosophy, has received little attention in psychological research on morality. Across five studies (plus three replication studies, Total N = 853), this research examined whether people can perceive moral disagreements as reasonable and, if so, what the predictors, implica
