Ovitrap surveillance of dengue vector mosquitoes in Bandung City, West Java Province, Indonesia.

Larval surveillance is the central approach for monitoring dengue vector populations in Indonesia. However, traditional larval indices are ineffective for measuring mosquito population dynamics and predicting the dengue transmission risk. We conducted a 14-month ovitrap surveillance. Eggs and immature mosquitoes were collected on a weekly basis from an urban village of Bandung, namely Sekejati. Ovitrap-related indices, namely positive house index (PHI), ovitrap index (OI), and ovitrap density index (ODI), were generated and correlated with environmental variables, housing type (terraced or hig

Current Status and Future Prognosis of Malaria Vector Control Pesticide Ecotoxicology and Xenopus sp.

Anurans from the genus Xenopus have long been used as standard testing organisms and occur naturally in tropical and sub-tropical areas where malaria vector control pesticides are actively used. However, literature on the toxic effects of these pesticides is limited. This review analyses the available data pertaining to both Xenopus and the pesticides used for malaria vector control in order to determine the pesticides that have the greatest potential to influence amphibian health while also identifying gaps in literature that need to be addressed. Amphibian diversity has shown the fastest dec

Species diversity and insecticide resistance within the Anopheles hyrcanus group in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Members of the Anopheles hyrcanus group have been incriminated as important malaria vectors. This study aims to identify the species and explore the insecticide susceptibility profile within the Anopheles hyrcanus group in Ubon Ratchathani Province, northeastern Thailand where increasing numbers of malaria cases were reported in 2014. METHODS: Between 2013 and 2015, five rounds of mosquito collections were conducted using human landing and cattle bait techniques during both the rainy and dry seasons. Anopheles mosquitoes were morphologically identified and their insecticide suscep

Evaluating Over-the-Counter Household Insecticide Aerosols for Rapid Vector Control of Pyrethroid-Resistant Aedes aegypti.

Vector control methods that mobilize and impact rapidly during dengue, Zika, and chikungunya outbreaks are urgently needed in urban contexts. We investigated whether one person using a handheld aerosolized insecticide could achieve efficacy levels comparable to targeted indoor residual spraying (TIRS), using pyrethroid-resistant Aedes aegypti in a semi-field setting with experimental houses in Mexico. The insecticide product (H24, a carbamate and pyrethroid mixture), available over-the-counter locally, was sprayed only on known Ae. aegypti-resting surfaces, for example, walls less than 1.5 m a

The economic impact and cost-effectiveness of combined vector-control and dengue vaccination strategies in Thailand: results from a dynamic transmission model.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dengue fever is a major public health problem in tropical/subtropical regions. Prior economic analyses have predominantly evaluated either vaccination or vector-control programmes in isolation and do not really consider the incremental benefits and cost-effectiveness of mixed strategies and combination control. We estimated the cost-effectiveness of single and combined approaches in Thailand. METHODS: The impacts of different control interventions were analysed using a previously published mathematical model of dengue epidemiology and control incorporating seasonality, ag

Vector-borne transmission of Zika virus in Europe, southern France, August 2019.

On 1 October 2019, a locally-acquired Zika virus disease case was laboratory confirmed in Hyères, Var department. Active case finding identified two additional locally-acquired cases living within 90 m, with symptom onset 8 days before the index case. Extensive patient interviews did not yield information supporting transmission through sexual contact or substances of human origin. Vector-borne transmission by local Aedes albopictus mosquitoes is the most likely mode of transmission. Here we describe the public health response.

Using the human blood index to investigate host biting plasticity: a systematic review and meta-regression of the three major African malaria vectors.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of mosquito blood-meals that are of human origin, referred to as the 'human blood index' or HBI, is a key determinant of malaria transmission. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted followed by meta-regression of the HBI for the major African malaria vectors. RESULTS: Evidence is presented for higher HBI among Anopheles gambiae (M/S forms and Anopheles coluzzii/An. gambiae sensu stricto are not distinguished for most studies and, therefore, combined) as well as Anopheles funestus when compared with Anopheles arabiensis (prevalence odds ratio adjusted for collec

Cost of intensive routine control and incremental cost of insecticide-treated curtain deployment in a setting with low Aedes aegypti infestation.

INTRODUCTION: Information regarding the cost of implementing insecticide-treated curtains (ITCs) is scarce. Therefore, we evaluated the ITC implementation cost, in addition to the costs of intensive conventional routine activities of the Aedes control program in the city of Guantanamo, Cuba. METHODS: A cost-analysis study was conducted from the perspective of the Aedes control program, nested in an ITC effectiveness trial, during 2009-2010. Data for this study were obtained from bookkeeping records and activity registers of the Provincial Aedes Control Programme Unit and the account records o

Vector Competence Assays for RVFV in Mosquitoes.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is the causative agent of Rift Valley fever, a mosquito-borne zoonotic febrile illness that primarily affects ruminants, camels, and humans. It is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, albeit with the potential to spread to and establish in non-endemic countries where mosquito vectors are present. Assessing the vector competence (VC) of local mosquito populations is essential for risk evaluation and to develop more accurate control and surveillance strategies. Herein, parameters for VC experimental design, as well as protocols for mosquito rear

Know your enemy: understanding mosquito biology to advance malaria elimination in Africa.

Over a century has passed since the discovery that the female anopheline mosquito is a vector of malaria, prompting extensive efforts to combat the disease. Vector control remains the primary malaria prevention strategy, accounting for a remarkable 65% reduction in malaria cases between 2000 and 2015. A thorough understanding of the fundamental biology of malaria vectors is essential for national malaria control programmes, governments, and local communities to implement sustainable and effective vector control measures. This article explores the key aspects of mosquito biology, such as adult

Dietary L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) augments cuticular melanization in Anopheles mosquitos while reducing their lifespan and malaria parasite burden.

L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), a naturally occurring tyrosine derivative, is prevalent in environments that include mosquito habitats, potentially serving as part of their diet. Given its role as a precursor for melanin synthesis we investigate the effect of dietary L-DOPA on mosquito physiology and immunity to Plasmodium falciparum and Cryptococcus neoformans infection. Dietary L-DOPA is incorporated into mosquito melanin via a non-canonical pathway and has a profound transcriptional effect associated with enhanced immunity, increased pigmentation, and reduced lifespan. Comparative toxicity of the isoxazolines afoxolaner, fluralaner, and fluxametamide, and the meta-diamide broflanilide against adult Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) and Anopheles quadrimaculatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquito-vectored disease remains a significant global public health threat. One of the most significant barriers to mosquito control is the evolution of insecticide resistance and limited number of available insecticide classes. Isoxazolines and meta-diamides are two classes of insecticides targeting the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) channel, a target site currently under-utilized in mosquito adulticides. Topical assays were conducted on laboratory colonies of the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), and the common malaria mosquito, Anopheles quadrimaculatus Say (Dip…

Mosquito vectors of dog heartworm in the United States: vector status and factors influencing transmission efficiency.

Dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is dependent on mosquito vectors for its maintenance and transmission among vertebrate hosts. Consequently, D. immitis abundance and distribution are closely linked with mosquito vector biology and ecology. Information on the important dog heartworm vectors in the United States is limited and no comprehensive surveillance of dog heartworm in US mosquitoes has been undertaken to date. Here, we review information gleaned from a number of field surveys documenting heartworm presence in wild mosquito populations as well as laboratory assessments of mosquito vect

Exploring the bioactive potential leaves of Sphaeranthus indicus: Targeting immature stages of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito vectors through bioassay-guided screening and fraction isolation.

Mosquito control is vital for combating mosquito-borne diseases, but concerns exist regarding the use of synthetic insecticides. This study aimed to explore eco-friendly alternatives derived from natural sources. The larvicidal, pupicidal, and ovicidal activities of various fractions obtained from the hexane leaf extract of Sphaeranthus indicus were investigated against two important mosquito vectors, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. S. indicus leaves were extracted with hexane and column chromatography was performed with hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and their mixtures as eluents.…
