Patent ductus arteriosus masquerading as aortic transection in a trauma victim.

A high-speed motorcycle crash is a risk factor for thoracic aortic injury due to the rapid deceleration mechanism. We present a previously healthy 44-year-old man who was involved in a motorcycle accident. Initial spiral computed tomography indicated an intimal flap, which was visualized with evidence of mediastinal hemorrhage. The man was taken emergently to the operating room where a patent ductus arteriosus was seen at the location of the suspected aortic injury. No true aortic injury was appreciated.

[Fatal bicycle accidents--causes and legal responsibility].

Ninety-nine bicycle and motorcycle accidents were analyzed that had taken place from 1980 to 1984 in and around Frankfurt on the Main. The postmortem examinations were done in the Center of Forensic Medicine at the University of Frankfurt. Twenty-five percent of the bicycle riders were children up to the age of 15 years and 25% were elderly people over the age of 60. Most of the people involved in motorcycle accidents were between 17 and 24 years of age. The greatest amount of accidents took place in the summer, but in October there was also a peak. On weekdays, Thursday was the day when most

Closed traction lesions of the brachial plexus--an epidemic among young motorcyclists.

One-hundred-and-sixty patients with closed traction lesions of the brachial plexus sustained in motorcycle accidents were asked about their accident. One-hundred-and-six responded. Most were young men with limited experience of riding motorcycles. Riders with less than one year's experience were more likely to be injured in the absence of another vehicle than were more experienced riders. Two-thirds of those responding felt the present training requirements for motorcyclists to be inadequate.

Temporal and out-of-sample prediction analysis of motorcyclists injury severities.

Motorcycle crashes represent one of the most severe threats to road safety, with disproportionately high rates of fatalities and injuries compared to other road users. This study investigates the factors influencing motorcyclists' injury severities in single-vehicle (SV) and multi-vehicle (MV) crashes, using the United Kingdom motorcycle crash data from 2016 to 2020. Motorcyclist injuries are categorized into minor, severe, and fatal. A random parameters multinomial logit model with a heterogeneity approach in means and variances is applied to model injury severities, addressing multiple layer

A profile of noise sensitivity on the health-related quality of life among young motorcyclists.

INTRODUCTION: Motorcycle riders with noise sensitivity (NS) may suffer from degraded health-related quality of life (HRQOL) because they are exposed to acute noise levels on a daily basis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was aimed to identify the relationship between NS and HRQOL among young motorcycle riders (undergraduate university students) aged between 19 and 25 years (n = 301) through a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, that is, Weinstein noise sensitivity scale and the World Health Organization Quality of Life. The effects of NS on HRQOL were assessed based on gender, the ye

Rider training, reasons for riding, and the social context of riding among young on-road motorcyclists in New Zealand.

Serious injuries to young motorcyclists represent an important public health problem. Little is known about the opinions and behaviours of the young riders at risk. We document the training experiences of young motorcyclists, and their reasons for riding or discontinuing riding, and identify the role models and sources of disapproval of motorcycling. The research was part of a longitudinal study of health, development, attitudes and behaviours of a birth cohort. At age 18 years, cohort members who had ridden a motorcycle during the past year completed a comprehensive questionnaire. Initial rid

Roadside observation of secondary school students' commuting to school in Vientiane, Laos.

To investigate modes of secondary school students' commuting to school and their unsafe driving practices in Laos, we conducted a roadside observation in front of the gate of a selected school in central Vientiane in December 2011. Of the 544 students observed, the majority came to school on foot (43%), followed by motorcycle (36%), and bicycle (14%). Of the 195 students who commuted by motorcycle, 45 (23%) drove it themselves. Of the 150 students who commuted as pillion riders, 35 (23%) were driven by a student or another child driver. The prevalence of helmet use among students (3%) was much

[Bilateral injuries of the internal mammary artery following blunt thoracic trauma].

Injuries of the internal mammary artery after blunt thoracic trauma are rare but potentially fatal. A specific characteristic of these injuries is that they can become symptomatic even after a delay of several weeks. This article reports on the diagnosis and treatment of a 41-year-old motorcycle rider who suffered bilateral injuries of the internal mammary artery after a motorcycle accident without any additional bony lesions.

Increased Mortality Among Critically Injured Motorcyclists Over 65 Years of Age.

BACKGROUND: Motorcycle accidents account for a large fraction of the patients with polytrauma treated in German hospitals. Clinical experience indicates that an in- creasing number of older motorcyclists are having accidents. We studied whether such individuals are subject to higher mortality and longer hospital stays. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated data from the Traumaregister DGU® (TR- DGU) concerning all patients (n = 13 850) who were registered in the TR-DGU as having sustained trauma in a motorcycle accident from 2002 to 2015 and who had an Injury Severity Score (ISS) greater than

The Pattern of Injuries Among Motorcyclists in Fatal Road Traffic Accidents: An Autopsy-Based Cross-Sectional Study at a Tertiary Care Center in Bihar.

Motorcycle accidents are a major health problem in India as well as globally. Out of the total fatal road traffic accidents, the majority of the cases are due to motorcycle accident injuries. Understanding the specific patterns of injuries sustained by motorcyclists in fatal accidents is crucial for designing effective preventive measures and improving road safety. The present study aimed to analyse the pattern and distribution of injuries among motorcyclists who succumbed to fatal road traffic accidents, with special reference to demographic characteristics, circumstances of injury, and contr

Severity and patterns of injury in helmeted vs. non-helmeted motorcyclists in a rural state.

INTRODUCTION: Under current law in our rural state, there is no universal requirement for motorcyclists to wear helmets. Roughly 500 motorcycle crashes are reported by the state each year and only a fraction of those riders wear helmets. We sought to determine the difference in injury patterns and severity in helmeted versus non-helmeted riders. METHODS: Retrospective review (2014-2018) of a single level 1 trauma center's registry was done for subjects admitted after a motorcycle collision. Demographic, injury and patient outcome data were collected. Patients were stratified by helmet use (n

Vehicle fatalities involving collisions with kangaroos.

A search was undertaken of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 20-year period from 2000 to 2019 for all cases where vehicle crashes had involved kangaroos. There were six cases with an age range of 18-62 years (M=42 years) and a male-to-female ratio of 5:1. There were three crashes involving motor vehicles and three involving motorcycles. The three motor-vehicle crashes were initiated by impact with a kangaroo followed by a head-on crash with a truck (n=1) and a tree (n=2). In two of the motorcycle crashes, the cycle hit a kangaroo, resulting in the …

Impact of Helmet Use on Severity of Epidural Hematomas in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, often necessitating neurosurgical intervention to evacuate intracranial bleeding. Since the early 2000s, Cambodia has been undergoing a rapid increase in motorcycle transit and in road traffic accidents, but the prevalence of helmet usage remains low. Epidural hematomas are severe traumatic brain injuries that can necessitate neurosurgical intervention. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with epidural hematoma secondary to motorcycle accidents who presented to a major national tert
