Derivation and identification of questions that act as predictors of abdominal pain of musculoskeletal origin.

OBJECTIVE: Although most causes of abdominal pain have a visceral origin, the musculoskeletal system must be considered when the cause is not obvious. This prospective study aimed to identify questions that would aid the diagnosis of patients with abdominal pain of musculoskeletal origin. DESIGN: Assessment of consecutive patients with abdominal pain recruited from gastroenterological outpatient clinics to develop diagnostic pointers to identify abdominal pain arising from musculoskeletal disorders. PARTICIPANTS: Subjects with benign abdominal pain, with or without a change in bowel habit, w…

The influence of knee varus deformity on the kinetic and kinematic characteristics of musculoskeletal models during gait.

An inherent shortcoming of generic musculoskeletal models is their inability to accurately model deformed musculoskeletal system, while generating fully personalized models are time and money consuming. To address this, we created a MATLAB tool that modifies OpenSim generic models, producing semi-personalized models. A subject with varus deformity participated in our study and her associated semi-personalized model was created. The semi-personalized model significantly decreased marker error during Inverse Kinematics (p < 0.05). Notably, hip abduction/adduction ROM increased by 4.87 degrees on…

Smartphone addiction and musculoskeletal associated disorders in university students: biomechanical measures and questionnaire survey analysis.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone addiction significantly impacts the musculoskeletal system, with 79% of younger adults aged 18-44 reporting excessive cell phone use. In addition, rare data exist on the roles of biological markers like 5-HT receptors, oxidative stress markers (TAC, MDA), collagen biomarkers (TIMP-1, TIMP-2), and triglycerides (TG) in the effects of smartphone addiction on the musculoskeletal system, particularly among university students. OBJECTIVE: Thus, the study aimed to investigate the potential link between smartphone addiction levels and certain biological indicators related to m…

A report on the mechanisms of sweeteners in four musculoskeletal disorders: Insights from network toxicology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations.

Sweeteners are widely-studied food additives linked to metabolism and obesity, yet their musculoskeletal effects remain largely unknown. To investigate the potential effects of sweeteners on the musculoskeletal system, this study integrated network toxicology, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations to systematically analyze the molecular associations between sweetener exposure and intervertebral disc degeneration, myositis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis. The results showed that sweeteners may affect musculoskeletal health by interfering with 35 core targets, which are primaril…

Pathophysiology of musculoskeletal pain: a narrative review.

Musculoskeletal pain (excluding bone cancer pain) affects more than 30% of the global population and imposes an enormous burden on patients, families, and caregivers related to functional limitation, emotional distress, effects on mood, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life. The pathogenic mechanisms of musculoskeletal pain relate to the differential sensory innervation of bones, joints, and muscles as opposed to skin and involve a number of peripheral and central nervous system cells and mediators. The interplay of neurons and non-neural cells (e.g. glial, mesenchymal, and immune

[Acquired musculoskeletal dysfunction syndromes in workers in the light of epidemiological studies].

Acquired musculoskeletal dysfunction syndromes (overload syndromes) that cause limitation of the system efficiency belong nowadays to the most serious problems in the medical care of workers. The etiology of overload syndromes is multifactorial, which means that occupational factors constitute only one of many causes fostering the development of those disorders. Occupational factors which increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders include physical factors related to the work environment or the way the work is performed, such as body posture, value of exerted forces, movement repetitiveness

Metabolic Syndrome in Musculoskeletal Practice: Clinical and Social Features.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic syndrome is a well-established cluster of cardiovascular risk factors with increasing relevance to musculoskeletal pain, function, and rehabilitation. Beyond its recognised effects on cardiovascular health, its systemic biological consequences may influence pain mechanisms, tissue health, recovery, and rehabilitation outcomes. Understanding these effects may enhance clinicians' assessment, clinical reasoning, and management of individuals presenting with musculoskeletal disorders. METHOD: This narrative conceptual paper explores the potential biological mechanisms thro

Evaluation of two types of swabs for sampling allograft musculoskeletal tissue.

BACKGROUND: Allograft musculoskeletal tissue is commonly sampled by a swab for bioburden screening. To determine if bioburden recovery could be improved at the pre-analytical stage, two swab systems were evaluated: the Amies gel swab and the ESwab. METHODS: In vitro studies were performed to determine the recovery of each swab system with <100 colony-forming unit of challenge organisms using inoculated swabs and by sampling inoculated femoral heads. The standard culture protocol used in this laboratory was also evaluated after sampling of inoculated femoral heads. A prospective study was perf

Key Concepts of Musculoskeletal Infection.

Over the past few decades, musculoskeletal infections have increased in both incidence and severity. The clinical manifestations of musculoskeletal infections range from isolated osteomyelitis to multisite infections with systemic complications. Although this increased incidence of musculoskeletal infections correlates with the increased incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, other nonresistant infectious organisms have been associated with severe musculoskeletal infections; this finding supports the likelihood that an antibiotic resistance profile is not a major

[REB methodology application on topical and oral NSAIDS' therapeutic benefit evaluation on acute pain related to musculoskeletal injuries].

INTRODUCTION: Acute musculoskeletal injuries are a common reason for primary care consultations. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are currently used in this context. Recent meta-analyses (M-A) showed a better benefit--risk profile for topical NSAIDs and no superiority of oral NSAIDs over paracetamol alone or in combination in terms of pain relief. It seems appropriate to evaluate rigorously NSAIDs' benefit-risk balance to support more consistent recommendations and promote appropriate evidence-based use of this drug class in trauma care. OBJECTIVE: This study's objective is to as

Skeletal development on fetal magnetic resonance imaging.

Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is being increasingly used, in addition to standard ultrasound, for the diagnosis of congenital diseases beyond the central nervous system. Previous studies have demonstrated that MRI may be useful for the in utero visualization of spinal dysraphism and for differentiating between isolated and complex skeletal disorders with associated abnormalities. More recently, attention has focused on the visualization of the human fetal skeleton for the delineation of normal and pathological development of skeletal structures. On 1.5 T, in particular, echoplanar
