The most important insects from medical point of view, are the blood suckers or the insect-borne diseases. Still others, almost non-blood suckers, but may attack man and animal to deposit their eggs or larvae causing pathogenic condition known as myiasis. In the present paper, a total of nine myiasis producing dipterous flies were collected from Cairo and Giza abattoirs. They were: Musca d. vicina, Calliphora vicina, Chrysomyia albiceps, C. marginalis, Lucilia sericata, L. cuprina, Sarcophaga haemorrhoidalis, Wohlfahrtia magnifica and Oestrus ovis. Their role as myiasis producers in man and an…

An imported case of traumatic myiasis occurred in a soldier wounded during military action in Panama in December 1989 and evacuated to Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. At the medical center, five larvae were removed from the scalp wound, reared to the adult stage, and identified as Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). Though this was the only reported case of wound myiasis of the 254 servicemen evacuated for medical treatment, this incident indicates a potential mechanism for the reintroduction of C. hominivorax into the United States.

The results of trials on eight farms to assess the efficacy of two pour-on formulations containing cyromazine for the prevention of cutaneous myiasis of sheep are presented; data from trials on sheep with larval implants and on sheep kept in cages with adult flies are also reported. The incidence of cutaneous myiasis was reduced by between 87 per cent and 100 per cent for eight weeks when a formulation containing 6 per cent w/v cyromazine was used at an application rate of 60 to 85 mg of active ingredient/kg bodyweight. When a formulation containing 10 per cent w/v was used at an application r…

Although cases of human cutaneous myiasis do occur in Queensland, few have been reported in the medical literature. No prospective studies to record and to identify the Diptera that are responsible in a particular area seem to have been reported. Thus, a prospective study was undertaken in Brisbane hospitals between October 9, 1986 and March 15, 1988. Fourteen infestations were recorded and, in 12 cases, the larvae were bred through to adult flies. In 10 cases, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann) was identified and, in two cases, Parasarcophaga crassipalpis (Macquart) was identified. All cases, except…

Conjunctival lesions of ocular myiasis are common in the mediterranean region. The authors report 23 cases of conjunctival myiasis. This affection is caused by fly's larvae: Oestrus ovis presenting typically with inflamed and oedematous eyes. We diagnose the affection by directly showing the larvae on conjunctiva. The treatment consisted to extirpate larvae one by one.

The authors report a case of Calliphorine myiasis in the scalp of a 64-year-old woman caused by the larvae of Phormia regina (Black Blowfly). There was extensive blackening of the scalp and necrosis of the soft tissues, which is unusual in Phormia regina myiasis.

In a random sample of animal producers and animal health personnel, 33% of the respondents in Trinidad, 15% in Guyana, 11% in Suriname and 9% in Jamaica recalled at least one case of human myiasis due to Cochliomyia homivorax (Coquerel). During 1981, respondents in Surinam (88%), Jamaica (90%), Guyana (85%) and Trinidad and Tobago (82%) found at least one case of myiasis in their livestock, occurring mainly in cattle, pigs and dogs. Feral animals, e.g. jaguars, were also found to be infested. The initial wounds were mainly the umbilicus of neonates, and arbitrary wounds, and vampire bites were…
