Mesenteric Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor in an Infant: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm predominantly affecting children and young adults. Here, we present a case of IMT incidentally discovered in the mesentery of a six-month-old infant, managed through radical surgery. The patient initially presented with decreased oral intake and post-feeding vomiting, leading to the discovery of a large pelvic mass. Following comprehensive evaluation and multidisciplinary management, including surgical excision, the patient experienced a favorable clinical outcome. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of I

Pericyte-myofibroblast transition: a novel mechanism in peritoneal fibrosis and the effect of Asiaticoside.

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal fibrosis (PF), a major complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD), is characterized by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition mediated by activated myofibroblasts (MyoFs). While mesenchymal transition of mesothelial cells has been widely studied, the cellular origins of MyoFs remain incompletely defined. Recent evidence suggests pericytes-mural cells surrounding microvessels-may contribute to fibrosis in other organs, but their role in PF pathogenesis is undefined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to clarify pericyte-myofibroblast transition (PMT) as a key…

Methylglyoxal-Stimulated Mesothelial Cells Prompted Fibroblast-to-Proto-Myofibroblast Transition.

During long-term peritoneal dialysis, peritoneal fibrosis (PF) often happens and results in ultrafiltration failure, which directly leads to the termination of dialysis. The accumulation of extracellular matrix produced from an increasing number of myofibroblasts was a hallmark characteristic of PF. To date, glucose degradation products (GDPs, i.e., methylglyoxal (MGO)) that appeared during the heating and storage of the dialysate are considered to be key components to initiating PF, but how GDPs lead to the activation of myofibroblast in fibrotic peritoneum has not yet been fully elucidated. …

Case Report: A case report of the diagnosis of renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor.

Renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a very rare disease that primarily occurs in the renal parenchyma and may even involve the renal pelvis. This study presents a case of renal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with exophytic growth, whose imaging appearance resembles that of a solitary perirenal mass. A 75-year-old male patient was referred to our hospital for further treatment after a retroperitoneal lesion was discovered and suspected at another hospital. Imaging examination revealed multiple cysts in both kidneys and a lesion located anterior to a cyst at the lower pole of the lef

Provoking myofibroblast death: Strategies to resolve fibrosis and remodel tumor microenvironment.

Fibrosis is marked by the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, leading to tissue scarring and progressive loss of organ function. Myofibroblasts, which emerge during tissue repair, are specialized contractile cells exhibiting features of both fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. Their expression of α-smooth muscle actin facilitates contractile activity, while their persistent activation and overproduction of ECM components contribute significantly to pathological wound contraction and fibrotic progression. Beyond ECM production, myofibroblasts play a significant rol…

Case report: The role and value of radiotherapy in treatment of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare soft-tissue neoplasms. Accordingly, there is no standardized therapy for unresectable or advanced IMT. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted molecular therapy play an important role in unresectable or advanced IMT. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 54-year-old man with a cough and chest distress case report. The thoracic surgeon performed the right upper pulmonary occupying lesion wedge resection and enlarged lymph node excision biopsy. Pathologic diagnosis revealed that the morphology of "right upper lung mass" was considered a

Role of macrophage-to-myofibroblast transition in chronic liver injury and liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver injury contributes to liver fibrosis, which is characterized by the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. ECM is mainly composed of myofibroblasts. Recently, macrophage-to-myofibroblasts transition (MMT), has been identified as a novel origin for myofibroblasts. However, the potential functions of MMT in chronic liver injury and liver fibrosis remain unknown. METHODS: To clarify the transformation of fibrotic cells in hepatic fibrosis, liver specimens were collected from people at different stages in the progression of hepatic fibrosis and st…

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Presenting as a Partial Bowel Obstruction: A Case Report.

Intussusception, or telescoping of the bowel, is a rare condition in the adult population that can lead to serious complications, such as obstruction or ischemia. Most cases of intussusception are idiopathic and present with a pathognomonic "target sign" on imaging. Rarely, in adults, intussusceptions can be found with lead points, some of which may be neoplastic. Treatments for intussusception include air enemas or surgical intervention if enemas are unsuccessful in resolving the telescoped bowel. This case report discusses an atypical presentation of intussusception in an adult female with a

Myofibroblast senescence promotes arrhythmogenic remodeling in the aged infarcted rabbit heart.

Progressive tissue remodeling after myocardial infarction (MI) promotes cardiac arrhythmias. This process is well studied in young animals, … fibroblast senescence and increased inflammatory signaling over a 12-week timecourse. Senescent IBZ myofibroblasts in aged rabbits appear to be coupled to myocytes, and our computational modeling showed that senescent myofibroblast-cardiomyocyte coupling prolongs action potential duration (APD) and facilitates conduction block permissive of arrhythmias. Abdominal Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour Presenting as a Pancreatic Mass: A Case Report.

An abdominal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (AIMT), is a rare benign tumor composed of inflammatory and other mesenchymal cells. It can affect the entire body, predominantly in children and young adults. The diagnosis is challenging considering the wide clinical presentation and can often be mistaken for malignant tumors. We report a rare case of a 46-year-old female patient, who presented with intermittent abdominal pain weight loss, and an abdominal palpable mass. Abdominal ultrasound found a well-defined 18 cm, rounded mass, with solid and cystic components. Abdominal CT demonstrated a
