Nanotube action between human mesothelial cells reveals novel aspects of inflammatory responses.

A well-known role of human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs), the resident cells of the peritoneal cavity, is the generation of an immune response during peritonitis by activation of T-cells via antigen presentation. Recent findings have shown that intercellular nanotubes (NTs) mediate functional connectivity between various cell types including immune cells - such as T-cells, natural killer (NK) cells or macrophages - by facilitating a spectrum of long range cell-cell interactions. Although of medical interest, the relevance of NT-related findings for human medical conditions and treatment…

Thrombogenicity and blood coagulation of a microcatheter prepared from carbon nanotube-nylon-based composite.

Here we describe the fabrication of nanocomposite-based microcatheter through-melt extrusion utilizing high-purity carbon nanotubes as filler and nylon as matrix. Homogeneous dispersion of carbon nanotubes in nylon can provide novel microcatheters with enhanced mechanical properties (easier to handle) and extremely reduced thrombogenicity or antithrombotic property. The present microcatheter with high performance is highly promising for medical applications.

Hybrid Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube-Nanocellulose Networks as Current-Collector-Free Electrodes.

Hybrid nanoarchitectures that combine structural functionality of nanocellulose (NC) with electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of growing interest for electroanalytical electrode design. However, CNT:NC hybrid film electrodes reported to date typically rely on separate conductive substrates, require binders, and rarely establish systematic relationships between processing, structure, and electrochemical performance. Here, we develop intrinsically conductive hybrid electrodes with a straightforward design, comprising current-collector-free, binder-free active layer from long-l…

Dynamic Interactions and Deformation Mechanisms in Nanocutting of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Ni-Based Composites.

Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the effects of cutting speed and cutting depth on the nanocutting behavior of carbon nanotube (CNT)-reinforced Ni composites. The results show that increasing cutting speed from 50 to 200 m/s reduces the average tangential cutting force by approximately 16.5%, while the cutting temperature increases by 26.7% at a cutting distance of 200 Å. Cutting depth produces a stronger influence on subsurface deformation, with deeper cutting accompanied by increased stress localization, structural disorder, and dislocation activity. In contrast, d

Confinement-Induced One-Dimensional Magnetism in CrSBr Chains via Carbon Nanotube Encapsulation.

Encapsulating low-dimensional magnetic materials within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) offers a compelling route to stabilize unconventional magnetic states and engineer quantum functionalities at the limit of miniaturization. In this work, we systematically investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of one-dimensional (1D) CrSBr chains encapsulated within CNTs by using density functional theory (DFT) and spin dynamics simulations. We demonstrate the structural stability of CrSBr@CNT, where confinement and charge transfer cooperate to stabilize ferromagnetism in the 1D limit, whi…

Chiral supramolecular organic nanotube used as a stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic separations.

Supramolecular organic nanotubes (SONTs) constructed by organic synthetic strategies have garnered widespread attention in recent years owing to their unique properties. Supramolecular imine nanotubes (SINTs) are a family of SONTs that have shown promising application prospects in many fields due to their characteristics of facile synthesis, tubular structures, ordered transport channels, excellent solubility, and confined cavities. In this work, a homochiral SINT, TCC3-R, was fabricated via the condensation reaction between 1,4-bis(3,5-diformylphenyl)phenylethynylbenzene and (1R, 2R)-1,2-cycl…

Thermosensitive In-situ gel based on halloysite nanotube/chitosan for site-specific delivery of aceclofenac.

Periodontitis, a severe and chronic inflammatory gum disease, necessitates the development of advanced drug delivery strategies due to the limitations of conventional therapies, such as rapid drug clearance and inadequate site-specific retention. This study addresses these challenges by formulating and evaluating a novel aceclofenac-loaded halloysite nanotube (HNT) In-situ gel designed for effective local treatment of periodontitis. Aceclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known for its potent anti-inflammatory action and reduced gastrointestinal side effects, was encapsulat

A highly-ordered close-packed metallic nanotube array for surface-enhanced Raman scattering.

This study reports on a rhombic metallic nanotube array (MeNTA) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. The close-packed structure of the MeNTA is made of silver and comprises over one hundred million rhombic nanotubes per 1 cm2. The space-efficient arrangement was developed using finite difference time domain simulations, and fabrication was performed using a top-down lithographic method developed for semiconductors, followed by sputtering at room temperature, making it suitable for SERS applications. Scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the highly ordered periodic…

Engineering an electroactive bacterial cellulose-carbon nanotube composite membrane against Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of skin infections in the U.S., and its rapid evolution and resistance to antibiotics create a barrier to effective treatment. In this study, we engineered a composite membrane with bacterial cellulose and carbon nanotubes (BC-CNT) as an electroactive dressing to rapidly eradicate vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus. Nonpathogenic Komagataeibacter sucrofermentans produced the BC membrane at an air-liquid interface. Then, carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled CNTs were integrated into decellularized BC to create stable and electrically conductive BC-CNT d…

Research on the Superlubricity of Lotus Root Starch/Carbon Nanotube Composite Water-Based Lubricant.

Lubricants are widely used in the mechanical, electronic, and medical fields; however, traditional mineral oil-based lubricants cause environmental pollution. Therefore, the search for renewable, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly lubricants has become a current research focus. In this study, a lotus root starch (LRS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite water-based lubricant was introduced into a lotus root starch water-based lubricant, and frictional experiments were conducted using a GCr15-SiC ball-on-disk tribopair. Additionally, by investigating the formation mechanism of the polarization

Direct photoconjugation multi-wall carbon nanotube-based immunosensor platform for clenbuterol determination.

This study reports the development of a carbon nanotube-based potentiometric sensor for the selective and cost-effective detection of clenbuterol. The sensor design depends on specific molecular recognition between clenbuterol and an anti-clenbuterol antibody covalently immobilized onto a photosensitive amino acid-modified multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) platform. This functional nanomaterial enabled the direct conjugation of the antibody-crosslinked electrode surface. An anti-clenbuterol antibody-bound MWCNT was used as the indicator electrode. An Ag/AgCl electrode was used as the refere

Integration of Functional Human Auditory Neural Circuits Based on a 3D Carbon Nanotube System.

The physiological interactions between the peripheral and central auditory systems are crucial for auditory information transmission and perception, while reliable models for auditory neural circuits are currently lacking. To address this issue, mouse and human neural pathways are generated by utilizing a carbon nanotube nanofiber system. The super-aligned pattern of the scaffold renders the axons of the bipolar and multipolar neurons extending in a parallel direction. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the scaffold maintains the electrophysiological activity of the primary mouse audi

Carbon nanotube pathogenicity conforms to a unified theory for mesothelioma causation by elongate materials and fibers.

The purpose of this review is to elucidate how dimensional and durability characteristics of high aspect ratio nanomaterials (HARN), including carbon nanotubes (CNT) and metal nanowires (MeNW), contribute to understanding the fiber pathogenicity paradigm (FPP), including by explaining the structure-activity relationships (SAR) of a diverse range of natural and synthetic elongate materials that may or may not contribute to mesothelioma development in the lung. While the FPP was originally developed to explain the critical importance of asbestos and synthetic vitreous fiber length, width, aspect…

Photocurable Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Nanocomposite for the 3D Printing of Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensors.

A photocurable resin/carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposite was fabricated from aligned CNTs in an acrylic matrix. The conductivity of the nanocomposite increased rapidly and then stabilized when the CNT content was increased up to and beyond the percolation threshold. Various structures were created using a digital light processing (DLP) 3D printer. Various polymeric dispersants (SMA-amide) were designed and synthesized to improve the CNT dispersion and prevent aggregation. The benzene rings and lone electron pairs on the dispersant interacted with aromatic groups on the CNTs, causing the former

Adhesion Strengthening Mechanism of Carbon Nanotube-Embedded Epoxy Composites: A Fracture-Based Approach.

Interfacial bonding integrity between different materials is critical to maintain the functionality of the entire physical system in any scale, ranging from building structures down to semiconductor transistors. For example, micro-patterned polymers embedded with conductive nanoparticles [e.g., carbon nanotubes (CNTs)] bonded with integrated circuits have been applied as many emerging chemical/biological microelectronic sensors. Nonetheless, it is challenging to measure and ensure the interfacial bonding integrity between materials for consistent and sustainable operations. Herein, we apply mu…

Kinetics of Carbon Nanotubes and Graphene Growth on Iron and Steel: Evidencing the Mechanisms of Carbon Formation.

Carbon formation on steel has recently become an active research area with several important applications, using either carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or graphene structures. The production of vertically aligned CNT (VACNT) forests with combined metals has been explored with important results. Detailed kinetics is the best approach to understand a mechanism. The growth behavior seems complex but can be simplified through the knowledge of the three more common alternative reaction mechanisms/routes. The time required to optimize the production and properties might be reduced. The mechanistic proposal …

Carbon nanotube filler enhances incinerated thermoplastics-induced cytotoxicity and metabolic disruption in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Engineered nanomaterials are increasingly being incorporated into synthetic materials as fillers and additives. The potential pathological effects of end-of-lifecycle recycling and disposal of virgin and nano-enabled composites have not been adequately addressed, particularly following incineration. The current investigation aims to characterize the cytotoxicity of incinerated virgin thermoplastics vs. incinerated nano-enabled thermoplastic composites on two in vitro pulmonary models. Ultrafine particles released from thermally decomposed virgin polycarbonate or polyurethane, and t

Cellular senescence as a response to multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) exposure in human mesothelial cells.

Cellular senescence is a stable cell cycle arrest induced by diverse triggers, including replicative exhaustion, DNA damaging agents, oncogene activation, oxidative stress, and chromatin disruption. With important roles in aging and tumor suppression, cellular senescence has been implicated also in tumor promotion. Here we show that certain multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), as fiber-like nanomaterials, can trigger cellular senescence in primary human mesothelial cells. Using in vitro approaches, we found manifestation of several markers of cellular senescence, especially after exposure to…
